On the forward play and lack of cohesion that a lot of people are seeing, from comments here and from pretty knowledgeable folks in the stand and terraces, it's clear there's so much more to do with our lads upfront and that they're capable of running up bigger scores with the talent we have there.
We've a lot going on in the loop / overlap options outside and just inside the arc; but it's the other training ground types of set plays and runs we need blocks of time put into with these lads.
Third man runs to punch through gaps and break the line. Kick pass isolation moves to try create some 1v1s - see some of the Dublin scores. Dummy switches and decoy runners to create lanes to attack. More diagonal cuts and backdoor cut creation. Overloads, with supporting defenders taking more scores etc etc. Other counties clearly have some training ground plays, each worth a few scores per game. We seem to still play ad hoc a fair bit of the time and overusing Finnerty won't always work. Nice to see Hernon coming forward and McHugh getting into scoring positions too but not pulling the trigger unfortunately.

I feel we are still conceding too much/giving up a lot of scoring chances. We have had our championship back 6 (maybe one spot up for debate) for most of the league - I know there is more to defending than your back 6 now, but it's a worry.

Overall, considering our away games and injury list, it's been a great league. Well done lads and drive on.

Looks very strong on paper to be fair but as you said a very big IF if fit and available especially 14 & 15. In terms of free taking who is on them Finnerty for inside the 45 for a left footer who is on right footer ones and long range ones?

I'd have Peter Cooke and Dessie as the icing on the cake

Tierney will be midfield, McDaid to wing forward. I think we will see Walsh.

I agree, we're too easy to score on. PJ should have been watching Arsenal rather than Man City last off season.

I wouldn't like to see the bill to fly the pair of them back

Both have been given fair chances. Cooke had an impact last year but couldn't give the commitment, conneely got many a chance and never thrived, mighty club players but it's a different ball game. Along with that neither are residing in the country so would be very difficult for them to play

Every county will tell you they have the same problem defensively, I'm more concerned with how many goal chances we've missed during the league. Another 3 easy enough chances missed on Sunday, Finnerty & McDonnacha have missed far more then they've scored.

Agree a brilliant league considering missing Thompson, Walsh, McDaid & Comer, this team won't let you down in the effort stakes.

I'd imagine players not making the 26 should be allowed, but not sure

U17

Roscommon 0-14 Galway 1-6

Very poor performance from a fancied Galway minor side. Just never got going. Ros took the big wind and built up a 6 point lead at HT but that didn't really look like it would be enough with the wind. Galway with the wind behind them just couldn't get their hands on the ball for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Ros just held possession and hand passed the ball through the hands back and forth and frustrated Galway. And sneaked in for a few points themselves.

Galway got it back to a 2 point game in added time but the ref ruled it out for a breach. Second time Galway got done for a breach. Ros scored 0-3 from those 2 breaches.

Real poor showing by Galway U17s tonight in Dr Hyde Park. 58 minutes and only 0-4 scored as Galway was bossed out of it by a Roscommon team that wanted it more and simply worked harder.

More learnt from that defeat than hammering Leitrim last week and I would expect them to bounce back with a improved showing and win the next game, far too talented of a group of U17s not too after impressively winning the Ted Webb cup last year with big wins against Dublin,Westmeath,Meath and Kerry in the final.

What do you think should be the ambition for that team realisitcally, give Connaught a good rattle and possible All Ireland semi?

That's a good enough side but it doesn't look like Comer, Walsh or McDaid are fit to play at this stage and it looks like the management have moved on especially in regards to DC and SW. The new players definitely are in the running but it will involve a lot of patience from the management which seems to be in short supply when it comes down to the crunch in a lot of our near misses over the last few years as they have consistently stuck with the tried and trusted injured players who have consistently failed to get us over the line.

Why's that bait?? What's the ambition if Galway get their full team fit?
You also made a typo but I don't like pointing it out as it's irrelevant on a football forum.
