I see Jogger has retired from inter county. A great servant like his dad before him, clean, disciplined and a great player

was just thinking earlier this evening tommy doyle when in his prime was one of the best full backs in the country and still surely had a few years left to give for westmeath, and there now i just see hes retired, a massive massive loss for westmeath hurling and a void left difficult to fill. i wish him all the best but a sad day

Replying To Dheen:  "I think if they had the full 15 on the field towards the end they would have won by 3/4 pts. CTG actually took over once Peter Clarke was sent off. They didn't play near their best though and when your away from home in Leinster you need to be at your best."
Correct CTG were three points up at half time. They should have came out tacked on a couple of points at start of 2nd half and they could easily have soaked up the clough pressure. Instead they conceded 1-2 and never really recovered. The sending off was harsh and they had chances to draw level or win game near the end but in the heart of hearts they know this one was a bad day at the office. I'm disappointed for them that they never really got going.
Good luck to jogger on his retirement from inter county a great servant to Westmeath hurling down the yrs.

A wonderful servant to Westmeath hurling.For me between 2016 and 2022 he should have won at least 1 All star.
His dedication to the Maroon jersey was unsurpassed and we will miss him massively.
Rumours also about other players as well.
Won't be an easy start for Kevin O Brien

Robbie Greville has also apparently stepped away, not surprising as I think his wife had a baby recently. Another big loss. Joey Boyle and Niall O' Brien are others who are probably considering their options. Kevin O' Brien will certainly need a long term plan as getting out of division 3 will not be easy. A defence without Jogger and Robbie Grev and with Darragh Egerton not back to full fitness yet is going to be a challenge.

All the best to jogger doyle real towering full back. wont be easy to replace him. possibly clubmate higgins can go in and take that 3 jersey had great championship.

We are facing into a transition period now and its no harm that we are down in division 3 we can build our way back up. There's plenty of talent coming at underage and the likes of David O'Reilly, David Williams, Darragh McCormack, Peter Clarke, Eamon Cunneen, Mark Cunningham need time to establish themselves further. We have a good minor team this coming year with an impressive management team with them so hopefully they can make a good impression, last years minors did well winning all their games up until the Dublin game. Another thing which is good to see is the increase in clubs being competitive and winning Division 1 titles at underage which can only bode well. We need all clubs going well.

You could say it's a bit of a re-building job and it's appropriate to have a local man in charge. He certainly seems to be targeting young players from the names I have heard invited in. Patience will be key and I think. Clonkill's slight demise will not help but hopefully the likes of Peadar Scally will make himself available for his clubmate.

Despite may personal awards including Joe McDonagh Hurler of the Year, All Star Nominations, GAA Player of the Week Nominations and more you can sense in Tommy Doyles retirement message a hint that a Club Championship with the Gaels would have been a much valued reward by him for his career to date as one of the great Westmeath Hurlers. There is no doubt for any of us that have played club and county that winning and bringing a championship home to the parish is the holy grail of rewards.

He has had a great career, and being fortunate to have been largely injury free. His skill and versatility has meant the LLG (and to a lesser extent Westmeath who lined him mostly in defence) have been able to deploy him in almost every position except maybe midfield which as maybe mostly made for racehorses these days.

His grandfather 'Barry' Doyle was a great honest and quiet man. He ploughed many a field and set and dug many spuds with a horse and cut and rowed hay with a horse drawn finger bar mower and rake. It's not hard to see where Jogger, his father Jogger Senior and brother Brendan also got their honest diligent and intensely hard working approach to everything they do. Big Men for the Big Day.

No matter anyone's club allegiance I'm sure no one would begrudge him a SHC medal to complete the journey and we can only wish him the best in the final quest.
