True. In some of their factories or shops they don't even bother turning on lights as there's no humans there.

There's not enough room in hospitals for patients and qualified staff, never mind even more student doctors and nurses!

We were a functional country up until the crash round 2008-2009, then the banks had overextended lending into a massive property bubble that popped and we the people had to pay the difference. We overnight went from being a small Country with €60 billion surplus of cash, to annually having a massive deficit between income and outgoings, a national debt of > €250 billion. Well maybe these FF/FG should do an audit with how many hospital bed we will need on average for the next 30 years and how many staff we need to man those beds, and order the Department of Education to get their fingers out. Its almost as if they don't want to fix things. Then again, this is the same FF/FG Political team who build the World's most expensive hospital on private land owned by a Convent or Order of nuns, and instead of compulsory purchase, they supposedly opted to pay rent for eternity. They also are responsible for building the worlds most expensive bicycle shed at €365k, which I could have done for a fraction of that price. You'd need to recheck some of them false comments.

Yet most of them considered themselves Irish a century ago. At what point did you consider your ancestors being Irish?

Well now that's a whole different rabbit hole. That's what I meant by a rich country acting like a rich country.

You made me laugh out loud. How in Gods name would they ever know how many hospital beds they will need when they haven't a clue how many people will be in the country. The Irish Government is reactive not proactive and in been reactive I mean they're about 15 years behind in everything they do. cluichethar (Mayo) - Posts: 588 - 16/10/2025 19:57:55 2640336 Link 1 |
I would think "15yrs behind" is a conservative estimate, and yes, by and large governments only can see as far as the next general election. This is possibly true of most governments

Are all those shouting for more hospitals, schools, Gardai etc etc prepared to pay the extra taxes needed to fund them????

We're supposed to be a technology and pharma economy. We are because we manufacture and export both for multinationals. But use of technology and access to some affordable pharma in the public health service is lacking and investment in technology could help to improve things. Too much time being wasted on pen and paper, putting files in drawers when they could be computerised, patient issues identified quicker and scheduling improved. The new Minister for Health is making noises about overcrowding, consultants working more flexibly, expensive equipment used more efficiently. We'll know soon enough if she makes any real difference to the HSE. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 8290 - 17/10/2025 11:28:49 2640380 Link 0 |
No need to increase taxation, we are already among the highest taxed Countries in the EU, the problem is the amount of money is wasted each year. Some starting suggestions - Open up tendering to a wider pool of contractors, remove the need for a history of tendering for projects over $100 million, as these large outfits are efficient at getting 10 times the original tendered prices. Allow local contractors the chance to expand. - Reduce the size of bloated Public Sector in Ireland, if you look at the admin levels within the various public sector bodies in Ireland, such as HSE, DSP, ETB, OPW and Local authorities etc, they are shockingly inefficient. Overpaid admin roles have people in jobs for life, while we lack critical front line workers. - Arrest and jail anyone who submits a requisition for a Bicycle shed that costs >€15000, there is a man in Cavan who can do them for €9000 - €12,000, VAT receipt & all. - Reduce Penalty points for speeding, but increase the fines x 10. You would think AI will replace a huge numebr of civil service jobs in years to come, especially the admin side of the HSE. On the pharma element. We have been hosting pharma companies for decades now, huge numbers of people skilled in all aspects of that industry, supply chain knowledge and logistics already established here, third level institutions linked in with that industry as well. Could the government not incentivise if not outright establish a generic drug brands industry here? I realise that could **** off the big companies but would it not be more sustainable long term? The big brands while pulling in big money now can up sticks and leave at anytime, they have no allegiance to Ireland, they are only concerned with money. Maybe we do already and it's not talked about. FullOfPorter (Roscommon) - Posts: 412 - 17/10/2025 12:59:42 2640398 Link 0 |
Do we need to increase tax of reduce waste? There's a great deal of trust that underlines your statement that is very misguide. I personally would be prepared to pay more tax if it guaranteed quality services and I'd image most people feel the same. I am not willing to pay more taxes for less value which is exactly what's happened for the last 15 years. USC, increase in vat, increase in fuels, increase in groceries, sugar tax, plastic bottle tax, property tax, household charge and all the rest, yet our services have steadily declined in the same period. Do you think that is acceptable? Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3979 - 17/10/2025 12:59:54 2640399 Link 1 |
Agreed

I doubt she make any difference, in fact I would be willing to come in 1 year from now to review her results. We have Unions representing the Public Sector workers who fight to keep those inefficiencies, which FF/FG are afraid to fight, I have heard first hand about the red tape public sector admin workers face, warned not to colour outside the lines. I would love to see what percentage of mortgage assisted house buyers in Ireland are public sector employees, or what percentage of couples include a Public Sector employee, because they tend to get mortages approved with greater ease. In fact anyone living in rural areas with lower end income levels would struggle to get approved for a mortage unless one of them are employed by a public sector department.
