Hopefully the lads will be allowed play some attacking football for the remainder of the championship, we were never gonna win Leinster and we're not going to win an All Ireland so why not respect the fans who pay hard earned money to go and watch the games. Longford scored 1-8 into the same first half goals that Westmeath shot a miserable 2 points into....why...because Longford played football...not basketball.

New hurling manager is Kevin O'Brien, good to see a Westmeath man in charge for the first time in a long time.

Replying To Claretandblue: "Turin qualified for the intermediate semi final after beating Southern Gaels this evening. I don't recall them being in any championship premier final in the last 15 years? They have lots of mobile young players along with the two Augheys and a decent keeper. Guy called PJ has been very impressive at wing forward and Ciaran Kiernan, Darragh Smith, Sean and Conor Leech and Oisin at centre forward are talented. Castletown seem their biggest threat despite losing a few players to senior. The remaining spots are up for grabs with St. Brigid's still in contention despite only one win." Yea, you're right, I think 2009 was the last championship final they were in. They're going well, the result of them and CTG game will probably decide who tops the group, but at the moment it's looking like a Turin v CTG final, anything could happen though. Two close games in the Park, Cullion didn't score enough in the 1st half and still could've won it, Plunketts have room to improve. The second game was similar with The Wood only 5 up at half time, Brownstown wiped out the lead quickly and looked like they were going to win handy, but as Pat O'Brien says the Wood are The Wood and aren't beaten until the final whistle blows. Delvin had a comprehensive victory over Ringtown, the 3 last round games all with something at stake, winner of Delvin v Plunketts top the group, winner of Ringtown v The Wood gets third place, a draw will do the Wood, and a Cullion win over Brownstown forces a relegation playoff, but a draw will do Brownstown. Some championship.

Replying To Claretandblue: "The senior b match in Plunkett's was a great game. Crooked wood won by a point, 2-14 to 1-16, very exciting game all through, Barry O Meara scored really good frees, the Regan's were excellent for Cullion, Kevin especially, he was all over the field, important win the the Wood after losing first game, Cullion unlikely to qualify now, they can't afford more losses" You're spoofing, I was at the game, Barry O'Mara went off injured after 15 minutes, he had scored a pt from a free and a goal from play. His nephew Lorcan scored 3 pts from placed balls, and you couldn't confuse them as Lorcan is about 6ft tall. The Wood had scorers from all over the field, and Cullion too reliant on the Regans and Gillens frees. Anything could still happen in this championship.

Replying To Greengrass1: "Not disagreeing with you but in the event of no referee turning up (which can happen) it falls to the host club to provide a referee or failing that for the teams to agree to a referee. Fixtures Sec can only do so much!" Why should the host club appoint a referee? It's not ladies football, where the host club is/was responsible for the ref. Some refs organise a replacement if they can't do it, failing that then the fixtures secretary should get a ref.

A great effort by all involved again today, plenty of chances to win it or get closer before Wexford got the 3rd goal. No blaming the ref but there were a few decisions I felt didn't go our way, Wexford seemed to be able to score easier, they were just a little bit sharper up front. D.McCormack would've made some difference, I doubt there's an u-20 defender in the country that would handle him. Andy Dermody & co have done a great job, Dermody's passion is absolutely mighty. Wexford also looked better conditioned, this needs to be addressed in the county, there's thousands and thousands being spent on our senior squads, some money needs to be ringfenced to physically develop our young hurlers & footballers, to give us every chance to complete. Offaly beat Galway today, and our lads only hurled for 10 minutes against Offaly. Anyways, fair play to this squad, you've done yourselves proud.

I looked at a few league programmes from 2024, the following weren't on the panel on Sunday; The Doyle twins (Killian to come back), Charlie McCormack, Shane Clavin, Aenghus Clarke, Shane McGovern, Noel Conaty, Darragh Egerton (inj), Niall Mitchell (inj), David O'Reilly (inj), Conor Lynch, Jamie Mulkearns, Conor Murphy, Cormac Boyle, Davy Glennon, That's 15 off the panel, am I missing anyone? It's great to add Darragh McCormack, Gary Greville, Niall O'Brien and Shane Williams, but no county squad can afford to be missing so many players, let alone a small county like ourselves, if any of the counties in 1A were missing so many they'd be relegated straight away. We have to be realistic, the Laois, Offaly & Carlow games were always going to be big ones, and hopefully we can give Waterford a good rattle in the park, a good crowd is essential for our home games.

The club secretary just told me that the football league finals have been put back a week to "give the teams involved the best opportunity of having all players available to them". But the hurling Division 1 and 2 league finals have been fixed for 28th June, two days before the Joe McDonagh final, is this to make sure county hurlers can't play in these finals? Add to this that Clonkill are in the D1 final and are in a strong position to make the D2 final, as far as I know there is a overlap of 7 or 8 players on their teams. The Division 3A and 3B finals are on Sunday 23rd in Cusack Park, Brigid's are in the 3A final and could make the 3B final. Were these fixtures sent up from Craggy Island.

Replying To Westmeathk: "Can I ask how exactly that's a shock? Plunketts have been working hugely bringing young lads through in the last few years? Just this morning I seen the u16 Westmeath team was backboned by 7/8 plunketts lads. If I'm not mistaking plunketts relegated the wood lastyear from this competition aswell?" If Plunketts relegated the wood then how are the wood still in the competition? This forum is like the Westmeath GAA podcast...riddled with inaccuracies

Replying To overdabar: "Shadow boxing to an extent Id say. Cant understand why hurling league finals were nt played a couple of weeks ago. A week before the first round demeans the competition to an extent." League finals in both codes were due to be played a few weeks earlier, there was a massive backlog of games due to bad weather, the delay was needed to play the games.

Replying To Dheen: "The Westmeath media is terrible, cant even name a team online the evening before the match and the likes of Galway playing on Sunday naming their team a couple of days in advance." Do you know if the manager released the team for the game yet? If he has it should be online, if not then it's not the PRO's fault. I believe the PRO is stepping down this year, the job should be split in two, a hurling PRO and a football one, ease the workload.

Replying To OverTheHill85: "The document released literally states that dual players are one of the reasons. I'm certain in saying no football people want the structure changed. So if the football people don't want change then it's obviously coming from the other side of the dual coin. So no it's not an attitude problem it's just facts." You're incorrect, hurling clubs have no problem with the current structures, this is not a proposal from the hurling side, this is being proposed by the county board, which is run by people from football clubs, there are approximately 14 or 15 members and if there's 3 from hurling clubs that's about it. And football clubs have more input than hurling clubs, as someone else said we're a football county.

Replying To Dheen: "Any idea of how many players Brownstown and Pollard have on that team? What's the split" Mostly Pollard, there is a Raleigh lad from Brownstown playing number 12 and he was the difference between the sides, as it has been said Pollard have the numbers but need the few Brownstown lads to win.

That's 9 what you would say were mostly starters in recent years from the Westmeath team of 2025 that are not lining out for whatever reason. From what I have seen and heard on Westmeath's social media in recent months most of them announced their retirements, maybe a couple of them didn't make themselves available or didn't announce retirement yet.
They were great servants of the county and they decided to say they had enough for one reason or another, family, work, personal reasons etc. 35 is most lads limit, but a lot of lads are calling it a day in the early 30's now because the commitments to a county team are savage. Diet, training or playing matches as often as 4 or 5 nights of the week, mental preparation and recovery. That has a huge effect on lad's personal life and work commitments. What's a lad going to do at the end of the day after hurling? Marry the 34 inches of his own hurl?
Westmeath haven't looked like winning in the Joe Mc for the last 2 years since they got relegated in 2023. Those lads mentioned above might make a difference and get us promoted but for how long? They'll be done in another year or two regardless. That's the reality. This transition phase was coming down the tracks no matter what. Be nice if a few elder statesmen held on to give a better balance of youth and experience, but they didn't. That's it.
That Tipperary team mentioned are a team with All Ireland aspirations. The likes of McGrath, Forde etc won't be hanging around too much longer, but the base of that Tipp team now is the youth like McCarthy, Morris, Stakelum. It's easier to entice lads to stay on past 30 when you could have a Celtic Cross in your back pocket come next July." When is the last time L.Varley played senior for Westmeath, can anyone tell me that? Hes definitely gone a few years. Craig made himself available this year but was surplus to requirements.
