London stalwart Liam Gallagher made a little bit of GAA history yesterday by becoming the first player to score a two-pointer in the All-Ireland senior football championship.
Gallagher’s score from outside the arc came in the 14th minute of their Connacht SFC quarter-final against Roscommon and kick-started the Exiles' rally which saw them going in at the break only trailing by a goal (1-10 to 0-10) in Ruislip.
The second-half would see the Rossies moving through the gears however, as they went on to record a 2-26 to 0-13 victory to move into the last four of the western province and send London into the Tailteann Cup in the process.
Asked afterwards about scoring the first ever SFC two-pointer, Gallagher said that it wasn’t on his mind at the time.
"I have to admit, being the first two-point scorer wasn't on my mind as I kicked it. I was just happy to get our team off the mark at the time," he told RTÉ Sport.
"Nice to go down as a pub quiz question for the future!"
On the game itself, the midfielder added: "We're probably quite scarred from this occasion the last two years. We took a bad beating from Galway last year.
"The magnitude of the occasion can sometimes get to boys who haven't played at this level before. That was probably reflected in some of our early attacks, we gave the ball away a bit softly. I guess my score gave us a foothold and we pushed on.
"It's just to go toe-to-toe with a team who got promoted to Division 1. Even though the scoreline wasn't too pretty at the end, we can say we got to half-time and gave them a good scare."
