Replying To Afinestick96:  "Its a big problem in the main towns lads committing to soccer rather than GAA. Not so much rural areas I know where Im from and neighbouring parishes lads play GAA and not that many play soccer. We have to figure out a way to keep lads hurling in the big towns. Hurling is really struggling in Enniscorthy and New Ross in particular and I think its probably not in the best place in Wexford Town either"
A lot of things really struggling in Enniscorthy and New Ross tbh

Probably Football where you would be targeting children from soccer or immigrant backgrounds. Definitely Hurling if you were trying to get more travelling lads back playing GAA, most of the travelling lads I know who would be going to support our county teams, or who would be down the pitches or playing on the street, would be pucking a ball, not kicking one.

The travelling lads I wouldn't have any experience with so I will take your word on it but on the other I would totally agree, I don't think Hurling people understand the fear that parents see when they look at hurling and imagine their kids playing it. You add the cost associated with it and its not something that lends itself easily to the non hurling community and in towns that cost element is a big thing. It has been easy to portray the GAA as always looking for money because well it has - giving the facilities they have built over the years. With soccer everything is cheaper, pitches and dressing rooms are smaller and (the first thing parents have to face) kit - best of luck in going into a housing estate and finding parents who will shelve out money for their kids for their first hurl and helmet - for a sport they don't particularly like anyway. Get kids into the field to play football and after the session provide the hurls and helmets and let them see there is nothing to be afraid of. Hurling and Rugby have the same problem - it looks dangerous however the entry points are very different, mini rugby is harmless and kids love it but then its a big step up and a lot give it up. Hurling doesn't have that dramatic change in age groups but its the initial entry point is where the challenge is - sure we mess up by poor coaching and bad management after that and kids may give up but they are fixable, get the kids in the door first.

The world has changed alot that way. Children are brought up softer. I started playing rugby when I was 6. I didnt play any touch rugby til I was around 12 when we would do it in training sometimes, and the thinking behind it at the time was it improved agility and footwork.

A couple of good schools hurling results today, Marys beat Mountrath by 8 points in Leinster Junior A, and CBS beat Castlecomer in the Senior B League by a goal.

Enniscorthy CBS seem like the best Wexford school this year in Junior hurling, might be the third best team in it after Kieran's and Kilkenny CBC

So Glynn have won the top divisions in both Minor hurling and U16 hurling this year, yeah?

Might be better than Kierans or KK CBC. Won't know til they play them. Agree though as nearly all the best hurlers in the county go to one or other of them, you would expect CBC and Kierans to be better than any of our schools in a given year.

Yep. First time ever winning the u16 title. Hopefully for them the lads stay playing until adult, and dont just give up if they arent playing Senior straight away.

If Glynn Barntown retain these players and bring them through they will become an asset to Senior hurling in Wexford. Hopefully they can!

Have CBS Enniscorthy improved significantly or have Peter's just gone back. It's not long ago that Peter's b team would have been playing against Enniscorthys A team.

The admission system to secondary school changed a few years ago, and the criteria for a cheap or free bus ticket. So there are lads from Oulart etc going to Marys now who mightve gone to Peters years ago.
Plus also Ballyhogue and Monageer and Oylegate have all got alot stronger at underage the last few years, and Marys is closer than Peters for alot of them.

Hope so too, and it would be nice to see the neighbours win a Senior hurling title too, never won one before.
