A very valid point there. Will be interesting to see how the senior team shapes up now the North Board High King has been dethroned.

Obviously there are good players from all parts Galway and the bigger population is with 10-15 miles of city ,, but on most if not all Galway 9 senior all Ireland's the north board would have definitely I'd say produce the most forwards , even last : 2 one 98 and 01 u had Donnellan , Fallon savage Padraig and Tommy Joyce Joe Bergen shay Walsh ,, not sure whst it is but most successful all Ireland winning senior teams have north Galway forwards ,

I agree with this. I'm married in Moycullen, moved there few years ago with my wife and it's mad to think lads who have been there longer than me are being talked about on this forum. To start, I think Tom Clarke is a "real Moycullen" lad, as in his grandparents were from there. Gallagher and Walsh are always around the village , they live in a housing estate there for about 10 years and would be very integrated. Finally, I would agree the home grown talent is next level. You're looking at the likes of Fionn McDonagh, Ger Davoren, Dessie Connelly, Peter Cooke, Sean o connor, Sean kelly, paul kelly, conor corcoran - all are definitely playing on a level that is inter county, starting panel level. They're all shooting 2 pointers. David Wynne and Eoin kelly are serious defenders. Eoin has saved more goals than their goalie. Best of luck to them all this weekend. The Galway team won as a team, not as a set of forwards. Yes there were excellent forwards on the 98 and 01 teams but they were well supplied and supported from midfield and the backs. Seán Óg scored the insurance point against Kildare and I doubt if Galway would have won without those great players at the back and Kevin Walsh at midfield. One of the best team scores in Croke Park, 2000, was the one scored by Declan Meehan - a wonder pass from his friend, the late Paul Clancy. They had that All Ireland won against Kerry if a certain forward had passed the ball to PJ who was in a better position. Kevin Walsh wasn't fit for the replay.

I was reflecting on MC in the past and the huge changes that have taken place - population growth, better transport and movement of people. What are the rules re outside players and outside managers, some coming from outside the province? It looks like there are rules but very little implementation. I don't think it's fair to single out MC, it has been happening in many counties for a good number of years. Crashingwaves (Galway) - Posts: 372 - 09/10/2026 13:58:59 2696694 Link 0 |

When I was playing I'm pretty sure if you moved in from another county you could play with any club in that county that you wanted to. There was no requirement to be based in the parish of that club etc. so long as you were residing in the county. This may have changed though I'm not sure. galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1415 - 09/10/2026 15:58:37 2696699 Link 0 |

Indeed they have. All the more reason why they should be even less reliant on outside players. Maigh Cuilinn have brought through some brilliant players over the past decade up from underage, many of whom have represented Galway. There is no other club in Galway that has had at least a third of their starting 15 be from other counties in the past few years, so they're hardly being singled out from a batch of clubs doing similar. Dublin is the only area where it happens regularly and they are city clubs without parish boundaries. The rules are that you pick from within your parish boundary or players who were in the parish and started with the club. There are some rare exceptions, but that's the general rule. Someone moving into an area and transferring is absolutely fine, but that wasn't the case with a number of the players in question. Nobody's questioning movement of people, so I'm not sure why you're bringing that up. The issue is the movement of certain players wasn't to Maigh Cuilinn, but to the city, but they played for Maigh Cuilinn. They're free to do what they want, but you can't complain if it doesn't sit right with some people. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 3103 - 09/10/2026 18:07:28 2696716 Link 0 |

We moved to Moycullen in 2008 our 3 eldest children went to school locally and within a year they were all about the football team and the county and all ireland club championship ( they knew nothing about intermediate or senior )a couple of years later it was hurling, so when 2020 arrived it was their dreamland. They now wonder why there is so much bad feeling being directed towards the lads they knew from down at the pitch or in the local shops.Attitudes seem to to have become very bitter since we moved at the end of 2023 south to Co Tipperary, they are young adults now but they still talk about the welcome and inclusion that Moyculen offered so maybe that's the reason players gravitate towards them, pre 2020 no medal hunters would even consider them. We hope to be in Pearse Stadium as often as possible to add some positive feelings towards Galway GAA.We moved on but can never leave.
