Im just giving my opinion that when judging teams one has to factor in how good or bad the opposition are.Its funny because many Dublin folk said Kerry were weak when Dublin reigned yet Dubs struggled with us a few times and were definatley outplayed by Mayo a few times so I think the era was weaker than the noughties where you had 4 or 5 top teams.

Forget about Kerry and I ll ask a question and try think honestly without your Dublin hat on?

Do you think that the Mayo team that Dublin struggled with bigtime and should have been beaten by them at least once were better than the Tyrone team of the noughties.

I know which team most would pick."
That Mayo team that ran Dublin so close on so many occasions is better than either team that contested Sunday's All-Ireland final.

Dublin - just beginning in 2011, finished of that great Tyrone team on a rainy night in Croker in a quarter in 2011 and then the Kerry team in the final was as good as anything in the 00s, in fact again in 2013.

Dublin became boring from 13 - 20 - not because of style of play or their competitiors but becasue of invinicability - they were the greatest.

Its no coincidence the game was more competitive before their regin and after, the game has dropped from theitr level , which means team were and are more evenily matched.

There wasn't a team of significantnce in the country unaccounted for.

I dont know what it is with Kerry, why does every player have to be the GOAT, why does someone who beats Kerry got to be GOAT opposition or a great era, its real chip on your shoulder stuff. Its actually highlights an insecurity."

Kevin Hughes was an excellent player, but I'd doubt too many would have him in there. He didn't play in the 2005 final and came on as a sub in 2008. His intercounty career was a bit short at the top level and he was out of the team while he was still in his prime years.
An example of someone who was very impactful in his earlier years.

Its a bad attitude i agree and maybe Kerry people shouldn't be so worried about others opinions.
Many people i know who follow the GAA outside of Dublin always regarded your success during the 2010s as somewhat artificial, though maybe they were reading too much Ewan Mckenna lol. It still never stopped ye from celebrating your success and nor should it have.

It must be said however that Kerry have been very gracious in defeat these last few days.

Which is more to be said about the way Mayo supporters have carried on over the years after defeats and need I say, from comments in recent days from certain people involved with Mayo about people not laughing anymore at Mayo.

Tbf every county would have been very gracious last Sunday. And rightly so.

Tbh I think the same would happen for any underdog who hasn't won in such a long time. .
The Leinster Final and Westmeath being another example.

I know in the Hurling it would have been nice to see Galway win the Final, also.

I don't agree. The old Mayo teams lacked belief to get over the line. Sunday's Mayo team had total belief instilled in them by Andy Moran that they would succeed. That never say die attitude got them over the line. The old Mayo team like a lot of others would have crumbled after going 1 - 5 to 1 point behind.

Was that the players or from the coaches though.?
It is partly the job of coaches to instill belief and a strong mentality.
They were unlucky also it has to be said.

Player for player the Mayo team from a few years ago was better.

But Kerry 26, aren't Dublin 0f 2017 though.

Also its interesting to look at what the score would have been without the new rules as well.

The 2 pointer really came of age on Sunday and Mayo prob the team to have the most success in exploiting it in an All Ireland final up to this point - that's not taking anythign away from Mayo 26, who are magnificent and hopefully just starting.

100% right. Andy and his backroom instilled in them that they could make mistakes and keep trying. Too often we flagged and stopped taking risks in the last quarter. There may have been better, more skilful footballers, in previous Mayo teams in All Ireland finals but none were as better prepared for the final to to go out and win the game.

Timing is everything. Kerry had limped in to the final and were vulnerable last Sunday and that young Mayo team had the confidence to take advantage and do what no other Mayo team did for 75 years.

The Mayo team from 2012-2021 got off to bad starts against Dublin and didnt crumble, they came right back into those games but were just beaten by an incredible Dublin team. Great result by Mayo on Sunday and fully deserved but I guarantee you they didn't all have total belief at 1-5 to 1 point down, Andy Moran said as much himself.

It may well be that they lacked belief but give credit to the Dublin team of that era,and I suppose Kerry in 2014 ,who refused to lie down too.

A Kerry team not allowed to play because of the pressure put on them by relentless tackling from a Mayo team 2 to 15.

I think you forgot a lot more than Seán, Mick. The Dubs of that era had so many stars they are lost in the crowd, just one more, Cian O'Sullivan, a rolls Royce of a defender and as cool as a breeze, Ger Brennan, Bryan Cullen, Philly(every time b4 RyanMc). Kevin Nolan, a star held back by illness. Alan Brogan, work rate and skill.
And I know I said back to back, or failing to defend the title, does not define a team nor should it and a team coming back after defeat is admirable, but still "a la" boxing parlance, defending the title adds substance to the achievement and to defend your title 5 times is awesome. The attitude, ability and discipline to do that demands appreciation and without ever losing a game on the journey.
