I expect a big Westmeath support in Salthill on Sunday seeing the game is sold out,The normal Galway following of 3 to 6 or 7 thousand will be greatly outnumbered.Lets hope they don't have too great an influence on the result.

I'm still grappling with the format so I have a question: the loser of Galway v Westmeath are they out of it? Or some other back door?

15k of the tickets sold are Westmeath supporters apparently, Matk McHugh in fairness to him has that county believing again, if Westmeath was playing Galway last year you'd be lucky to see 2k Westmeath Supporters turning up to Salthill.

Loser is still in it. Has a game against the winners of the losers round being played this weekend.
Easiest way to think of it is, two wins you're in the quarters, two losses you're out.

GAA fans are suspicious of any draw format that isn't called 'a backdoor'. 16 teams play their second game in Sam Maguire competition next weekend. After that, 4 teams will have two wins, and be in the qfinals. 4 teams will have two losses, and are out championship. The remaining 8 sides will have 1 win and 1 loss, and will be drawn off to play a third fixture. The winners of those fixtures qualify for the qfinals.

Winner into the All-Ireland quarter-final with a valuable rest week.

Loser has to bounce back against a team off the back of win. Could be Kerry,Dublin Meath,Derry or Monaghan if they beat the rossies.

On Westmeath they have scored 14 goals in the championship this year the most of the last 16 teams. Stop them scoring goals should make Galways task easier on Sunday?
