Huge week for Westmeath Football , shows the hard work thats going into our underage structures from coaching perspective. We hadnt beaten a Dublin team in minor for 30 years and 26 years in u21/u20 (correct me if Im wrong). We were the better team last night and fully deserved it , real swagger and confidence about the way they play. Matthew Thornton was man of the match , absolutely outstanding and mention for Kealen Connell and young Ormsby. Hopefully the seniors can feed off this and get a result at the weekend . It is going to be an extremely tight game against Longford.

I don't want to be sounding negative, two great win for minors & u20's but lets hold off on celebrations. We are only in a u20 quarter final & need to beat Offaly to make a minor semi final (i think). However, with the crop of players coming through in the county from 16 to 20 aided with some of our current senior squad we should be aiming at winning a Leinster senior title or two in the next 6 to 8 years. That's long term ambition so our county board should be planning for this & making sure these lads get the best facilities possible. We're not going to have a center of excellence up & running in the short term but we should be putting plans in place to have it developed while put something solid as an alternative while its being developed. Whats the point in westmeath GAA at all if we've no amibition. Is everyone always going to be happy going through life as a westmeath fan with no major trophies its that lack of ambition that has led to only 1 leinster in 140 years but men ike kenny mckinley know what it takes to win major trophies and hes instilling that in this current excellent crop of players

We're a small county, small population and we're a dual county to boot. It's rather realistic I'm afraid to assume that it might be a while before a breakthrough. We've appeared in 5 Leinster Senior football finals and 1 Senior hurling final and won 1 from 6. 2 of those football finals were washouts too in 2015 and 16. Admittedly, we were up against arguably the greatest football team of all time, but that's it. The standard of Leinster football outside of Dublin was never lower than in the past 2 decades. No All Irelands were won by a Leinster team bar Dublin in that timeframe. Realistically, we were the best of the rest at that time. It's a bit premature to say we're on the road to another Senior Leinster success just yet. The Mullingar CBS win was great. Hopefully it's a sign of a good underage team capable of doing something at minor or u-20 level. Hopefully they go on and do well and make a Leinster final and we'll see what happens then. Ambition is great to have but everyone has ambitions of winning something. To make it really happen, we need a conveyor belt of talent coming through over a sustained period. Teams like Dublin have quality and quantity coming through the whole time. We haven't the numbers so making better quality out of what we have is the only thing we can do. Great win and performance today-you can only beat whats in front of you and 5.25 is a huge score to put up no matter what the opposition is like.Our transitional play today was excellant and everytime we broke we looked like scoring.Every chance against Meath next sunday and agree we had very good travelling support today. Big win for westmeath, I thought it wouldbe much tighter and maybe even a shock on cards if westmeath slept walked into it. Congratulations on the win yesterday. Fancied ye before the game and it was nothing if not convincing. While it would have been widely accepted on our side we were coming up against a much better team, I would have hoped we'd have put in a better performance, but our same failings throughout the year continued. I don't see any reason why ye cant give the TC a good run this year. Unfortunately, from our side, we're going nowhere fast and there isnt exactly much coming through to give hope for the years to come. Well done to the management & extended panel of players on a fantastic performance v Longford. A big week ahead for our inter county football teams minor, U20 & senior - best of luck to all.
