Replying To Viking66:  "Its a token gesture, and maybe a bit of a deterrent. But at the end of the day they are heavily outnumbered and outgunned by Hezbollah and Israel. They wouldn't stand a chance against either side."
Clearly the recent evidence suggests peacekeepers are a zero deterrent in Lebanon to either side, so to me its a pointless exercise that is risking the lives or Irish peacekeepers for no reason other than being a token gesture with no substance.

Not much of a deterrent when everybody knows they are dogs with no bite.

So Peace-monitoring UN representatives is probably a more accurate title.

Time for the UN to disband?
Like it's predecessor the League of Nations it proved powerless when the big bullies started wars.

I hate war as I repeated over and over but don't treat it like it's Angel vs Devil because there's enough evil to go around. I hope the Iranian PEOPLE get what they want but I have no love at all for their Government (or Israel's). But having said that I really hope this gets over with quickly."
Perhaps you could explain what was ignored, I prioritised your point at the start of my reply. You chose one isolated incident, an incident that is also being reported as a punishment for crimes that merit the same death penalty in America, by the way.

Nobody said it was angel vs devil, but America and Israel attacked Iran during negotiations, multiple times. So stop pretending you dont see the oil/empire greedy elephant in the room please.

Probably is only useful in humanitarian missions. The big boys don't care or observe international law. As a US contributor said on TV recently…"Why are you talking about international law….? The US don't care about it and break it regardless. Same goes for Israel, Russia, China. The only countries obeying international law are the small ones".

low info. posters in no short supply here. The U.N. has many branches committed to improving the condition of humanity.
Disbanding would be a disaster.

Trump on another rambling rant last night. This time re threatening to take Greenland unless EU states step up and help them with Iran and the strait. What a president! Any commentary from the Galway trump fan club here?

No, but the world needs a mechanism to overcome the veto power of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, as that is ultimately what renders the UN powerless in matters of war.

And if those members refuse, then perhaps the UN should discard those permanent members and remove their influence from it completely and have the UN represent the rest of the world without Veto. Leave the US, UK, France, Russia and China on the outside.

Obvious question here is - who funds the UN and its vast organisations. It's not just the general assembly or the security council anymore

What your thoughts on your hero celebrating the death of former FBI director, Purple Heart recipient & non draft dodger, Robert Mueller? How do people like you square that one up?

All the constituent members. ie all 193 countries. how much they pay is dependent on few factors like debt levels, Gross national income. so US, China, many european countries will pay lot more than many african or asian countries

I don't care who likes who. None of my business. Just like those on the left that cheered Charlie Kirk's death. There's all types out there.

I'm more anti Israel than you so I'm not happy at all with Trump right now as far as that topic goes. Trump attacked the Bush's and Cheneys years ago about all the ENDLESS WARS and I was fully behind him on that so I'm very disappointed that negotiations didn't continue like he did with North Korea in the past.

Exactly my view. He's been completely bought by same forces who revel and profit in these adventures.

Likewise i would love to see Cuba free from Communists but not bombed back into control by other gangsters.

Not at all unlikely given whats going on.

I'm sorry, but you cant claim to be more anti Israel than me and continue to support a man who gives Israel the licence to do whatever they want while calling them the closest of allies.

Cuba intrigues me. What happens if Communism there falls? Do the people that fled to Miami and other places come back to claim what they used to own?
