Derry have a very talented squad and a lot of underage talent coming through, if they keep key players like Conor Glass, Lachlain Murray, Shane McGuigan, Brendan Rogers, Gareth McKinless all fit, they will be a handful for anyone they meet, especially if the get some traction and a winning streak under their belt. The Management setups since Rory Gallagher stepped down has really impacted them, Rory had been the first manager in decades that seemed to overcome bitter club divisions and unite them, and made a formidable outfit. Ciaran Meenagh seems to have them pulling in the right direction again, they could surprise a few people this summer. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1644 - 03/03/2026 22:02:32 2659831 Link 0 |

The rise of Meath and decline of Dublin, will make Leinster more competitive again, with the like of Louth, Westmeath, Kildare etc all capable of taking scalps and doing well. Carlow have been playing well in Division 1 this year, its not beyond a them to take a scalp later and who knows where that could lead. Ulster is generally always competitive, but the standard fluctuates depending on the top teams and where they are at on the national stage. Definitely always a few teams up around the top 3-4 bracket in the last 5-6 years. Connacht is very competitive, but its the small number of teams that restrict it as a competition, obviously its dominated by the powerhouses of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, but you also have Sligo and Leitrim, who are a lower level, but still footballing Counties. Munster is often dismissed, but I think its more that Kerry are often on a much higher level to the rest of Munster, like as in the top 2 or 3 teams in the Country every year, while you might get Cork in the top 10 or 12 some years, but Cork haven't consistently been breaking into that top 4 or top 6 since maybe 2012 or so. Tipperary looked really good for a few years, but dropped off, Clare can be a formidable team at times, but not really Top 10 or Top 12 material. The National League isn't really treated as a competition by most Division 1 teams if we are honest, its merely a pre-Championship chance to try match ups and break-in new players against top level opposition and see how they perform and maybe test out tactical setups/systems etc, to see how they work. Obviously if some teams are in a good place with limited injuries and big squads and enough points on the board without risking key players, they give it a rattle. But even if they win, there is no big homecoming or big celebrations following leaving Croke Park. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1644 - 03/03/2026 22:32:25 2659834 Link 0 |

Waterford county board are a disgrace. Their lack of support for a football community that have produced good county champions is disgraceful. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 9504 - 04/03/2026 00:01:48 2659846 Link 0 |

Why are Waterford county board a disgrace? Just 4 clubs have dominated their club championship this millennium, Rathgormack, the Nire, Ballinacourty and Stradbally. Very hard to achieve intercounty success with such a small base. Only 3 other clubs have even made the final since 2001, and only once each at that. Tramore, Ardmore, Kilrossanty.

Mayo don't need a league final. It we get to one it's a bonus. You talk about a new manager needing it? Kevin McStay won the league and it didn't do Mayo any good. Mayo have won multiple leagues in the past. The winner of Kerry v Mayo in Tralee will likely be in the league final. Mayo are going to be without their u20 forwards. They can of course still get a result but it's not the b all and end all. I'd argue your own county Roscommon would have benefited massively from getting to a national division 1 final. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11941 - 04/03/2026 09:14:43 2659871 Link 0 |

Not jumping the gun and assuming by any means that Donegal will definitely qualify for the league final BUT can anyone give me an answer as to whether the division 1 final is always on the Sunday of finals weekend? I'm thinking from memory this is always the case but can't get a definite answer on Google. Thinking of booking something that's non refundable . Yes I think Mayo done a "six in a row" in the league way back, I remember journalists referring to Mayo as the "league specialists" with some irony!

Mayo have lost the last two times we played in Tralee. 2019 was our last win. Although we won a championship game in Killarney since. MayoDan (Mayo) - Posts: 521 - 04/03/2026 13:04:41 2659922 Link 0 |

Mayo have only won 3 league titles in the last 55 years.Hardly multiple wins.

Hence my post about the league final…who cares if we get there or not? Mayo don't need to make a league final. In fact I'd argue the league has been devalued even more so since the condensed championship was brought in.

As one of the longest term posters on here I can pretty much guarantee he's no rossie. You seem to have a strange fascination about us and if memory serves me right it came about with a group of teens waving flags in Cloonfad as you drove home from All-Ireland final defeat? We played in a Croke Park league final last year and it was no benefit to us at all, matter of fact we never recovered for the championship after that 10 point beating. What would benefit us massively is consecutive years of Division one football (at least 3 or more years) and with 6 points secured with two expected defeats to come we'll hopefully have done enough to stay up which will be achievement in itself when you consider it was 1/10 odds on Roscommon to be relegated before the league started. D2 Final was usually the curtain raiser on tge Sunday. Was moved to Saturday last year because we were playing London a week later. Seanfan (Roscommon) - Posts: 399 - 04/03/2026 16:52:09 2660000 Link 0 |
