Well, for years now we have had an influx from all over, mainly dubs, all trying to improve their pronunciations. No spinoff on the hurling of football fronts as yet, but hopefully, that will come.

Laois might not have had their best side out but you can only beat what's put in front of you - so good to finally shake off the 23-year hoodoo with a win over our noisy neighbours.

Hulton and Conor Doyle were excellent again they will be huge players for us this season. Amongst the new comers both Tadgh Roche and Pádraig Bolger have impressed. Next Fridays game should be a good opportunity to get more game time for the likes of Mikey Bambrick, John Murphy, Niall Hickey, Niall Roche and Aaron Amond.

The Wicklow game sets the tone for the season ahead, firmly identifying them as our main rivals in 2026, with three crucial derby clashes against The Garden county on the horizon. Next Friday presents our first opportunity to win silverware since 2002. The league encounter will be pivotal in determining promotion, while the Championship meeting offers a chance to secure our first Championship victory since 2018. Wicklow also provide the ideal benchmark, as both sides will rightly fancy their chances of promotion from div 4.

After putting an end to some long standing negative streaks with wins over Wexford and Laois, Carlow now have the opportunity to win 3 games in a row for the first time in 8 years (2018 National League - 6 consecutive wins). These might sound like small wins but they are exactly what we need to turn the tide of Carlow football slowly but surely. If we could beat Wicklow 2 out of 3 times this year I believe it will lead to a successful season overall.

As much as it would be magnificent to lift the O'Byrne Shield, the priority for Carlow footballers is very much the league. After 3 games in 8 days and now another big one Friday, I just hope we haven't over leveraged ourselves before the league. A prime example of this being Longford winning back to back O'byrne cups under Paddy Christie in 2023 and 2024 only to be relegated in div 3 of the league in 2023 and finish midtable in div 4 in 2024.

Antrim Watch: From the outside looking in, our preparations for our opening league game v Antrim look to be going well in comparison to theirs. The Saffrons are now off the back of two heavy losses albeit to top opposition. Most notably they are struggling In the scoring stakes, in the 2nd half v Derry they scored zero, just 3pts in the 1st half v Donegal and 4pts in the 2nd half. Meanwhile, We are starting to score more freely with 1-8 in the 2nd half v Wex, 1-8 in the first half V Laois and 1-7 in the 2nd half.

Well done on winning at the weekend, no complaints Carlow deserved the win the other day in Rathvilly. Laois were missing about 10 maybe 11 starters as McNulty prioritized playing Cavan the following day and rightly so.

Mainly because The O'Byrne Cup is basically a glorified friendly competition and absolutely nothing should be read into it from Dublin to Carlow to Meath to Laois.

Joe Murphy is a very good manager and I've no doubt he can achieve something with Carlow in the coming years. But as a county, you've an awful habit of getting carried away on the back of a win here and there.

Best of luck for the year anyhow, it would be good to see Carlow back in Division 3.

Looking at the county minor football panel which has been announced. Same management team as last year which is very good news. I wouldn't know the scene terribly well but from last year's U-16 championship I recognise some very strong individual players ... but whether there's enough of them to make a competitive team in Leinster I don't know.

What I find strange is that there is not one player from St Martin's who are usually good for 5 or 6 at this age group, and what is disappointing is that we seem to have lost out to league of Ireland soccer and to rugby in one case on a couple of major talents who are not included. There's one in particular who is an absolute powerhouse and he'd make a huge difference around the middle and he has been involved in and out up to now but he's presumably unable to commit and in that case it has to be said fair play to management for drawing the line and going with the lads who can commit, rather than having some lads half in and half out which has happened in the past and turns other fully committed lads off.

Still no sign of a minor hurling panel being announced ... there's is a few dual players who I see are named on the football. Hopefully that can be managed without overplaying the lads.

I think there may have been minor hurling trials last week, not sure how long they will take place for. Not surprising they may be slightly behind given the late appointment of management. The minor football management also had the regional event to help identify players.

My hearing is that it isn't being played and that the league match two weeks later will have the Shield as a bonus for the winner.

Any idea what the issues are within the Wicklow camp? Or is it an agreement to have less minutes in the legs pre league?

I see that as well now. My information came from someone within the Wicklow camp. It will see be interesting to see what pans out. I think Leinster Council would be involved in arranging it anyway.

DM was listed in the long list of subs but didn't play. I can only assume he's injured as he's started for them up to now and if he wasn't injured he'd surely be one of the first subs named, whereas they listed him as no. 39.

Re KMcD it must be the same man but I don't know that for sure. I don't know of any other hurler in Carlow of that name and to make that team you have to be fairly handy so i think a second KMcD would be known in Carlow hurling. Strange position mind you.

Team for tomorrow night has quite a few changes. Only to be expected with the league match two weeks away. A few lads starting their first games of this year tomorrow.

Johnny Furey, John Murphy, Jimmie Carroll, Chris Blake (hadn't realised he is back in this year), Cormac Lomax, Aaron Amond, Cian Cashman, Paddy Regan, Liam Gavin all starting. That's 9 at least by my count so expect to be a bit rusty possibly. Good to see lots of lads getting a chance, Joe obviously still operating off a squad of 45, and yet the team still looks strong enough. Hopefully they go well but it's by far our least important game against Wicklow this year.

After seeing the squad I don't think it's an U20 runout. Pretty strong side from us with some lads coming back in for the first time and a few fresh faces. Seems to be giving lads a chance before the league.

If that rumour is correct, then Wicklow or any other county that is NOT going to fulfill the fixture programme in that competition is showiin disrespect to the competition and sponsor should not enter if they already have other committments made.

Don't be minding free thinker and his constant rumours. There was never any suggestion of this being played as under 20. Carlow u20 have their own programme completely separate to the senior programme. U20 played SETU the other night. Same fella said earlier this week another rumour was the match wasn't going to be played which was nonsense also. Not a scooby.

"Constant rumours" ?? That's a bit overstated, and there is no need to be so dismissive of other people's opinions, or rumours. I know it can't be easy being as expert and knowledgable in all matters GAA as your good self, but we do our best. That being said, we will see tomorrow what kind of game it was, or who played . Anyway, do enjoy tonight's game, can't make it myself as these old bones don't enjoy the winter weather anymore. Looking forward to the game Sunday 2 weeks, and as I said in an earlier post, may the best team win.
