Yawn.. Turlough have won nothing in 40 years. BigBàsMan (Galway) - Posts: 195 - 07/10/2025 16:50:46 2638861 Link 2 |
I'd imagine so, but I've seen some odd decisions over the year. Some achievement, as I said given how poor we were in general.

Will the crowd be that bad? Im no fan of Pearse stadium but I do think a double header under lights is worth a shot the novelty alone

worst decision ever Play hurling in daylight SixtiesKid (Galway) - Posts: 364 - 08/10/2025 10:02:49 2638917 Link 1 |
Someone got the bright idea ( get it ! ) & that the Saturday night fixtures in the National Hurling league were a great success and so here we are ! Totally unfair on the 4 teams to have to deal with lights and the almost guaranteed costal Winds .... in a stadium devoid of atmosphere , never mind the traffic and parking . Athenry is the home of club hurling in Galway and demonstrated that with a fantastic Co Final experience in 24. You could hear the groans around the county when the announcement was made. trying to justify the lights in PS and all the money wasted there over the years Athenry is the home of hurling in Galway, period. The 4 clubs involved are all closer the Athenry and the ground is way better. Flood lights are one of the greatest curses that have emerged in recent years, playing hurling at nightime in winter. Pure madness. we're in a hole, so dig deeper!!! SixtiesKid (Galway) - Posts: 364 - 08/10/2025 13:17:21 2638940 Link 1 |
They could have played the Senior double header underlights at the Duggan Park Ballinasloe. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2731 - 08/10/2025 13:22:58 2638942 Link 2 |
How many is Duggan Pk allowed hold? 2! 3! or 4 thousand? It has a grassy bank on one side with no restraint barriers and a small stand as well as some concrete seating on either side of it on the other. Do you really think that each team will not have much more than 5 or 6 hundred supporters with no neutral spectators?

Being pedantic, but with a 5.30pm throw-in, the first game will surely complete in daylight anyway.

Very little neutrals will travel and less from each club will travel. It's just not fancied by most people. Under lights also, ridiculous, and it still bright until 7pm. Athenry should always host the semis, the atmosphere is electric. Proper hurling country.

Horrendous decision under lights. Biggest game of the year and they land players with this. How many have they played under lights this year? Should probably play the final under it now also since they are starting it CillTormoir (Galway) - Posts: 579 - 08/10/2025 15:47:31 2638965 Link 1 |
Duggan Park can hold 10,000. Alot more neutrals would travel to Duggan Park. If those Clubs were given a choice where would they prefer to play underlights.........they would go for Ballinasloe. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2731 - 08/10/2025 16:50:53 2638970 Link 1 |

Not a prayer 10,000 would be let into Duggan Park because of health and safety regulations. You'd be looking at half that and even then, the facilities aren't good enough to cater for that. It desperately needs investment. Any Joe O'Toole types in Ballinasloe?

Agreed. Maybe the GAA could throw a bit more money at Duggan Park or Athenry or anywhere that suits the fans and avoids traffic as much as possible. Sigh.

A total insult to the game of Hurling, and to all 4 teams. Is everything based around money. Disgraceful decision. SixtiesKid (Galway) - Posts: 364 - 08/10/2025 19:00:02 2638985 Link 1 |
Duggan Park is only allowed to him 3,000 for health and safety reasons, so it's a non-runner.

I did ask "what's is it allowed' which is very different to what you can fit in.

Pouring money into Athenry Ballinasloe or Tuam has has one major constraint in hatt there is only one one access point to all of these grounds and Athenry is very similar to Saltill in the 70's in that its environs are just beginning to be developed but it doesn't have multiple access points. I believe a large part of the perimeter is a protected area which is a further constraint even before the inevitable gridlock.Galway city is the county administrative centre and unlike most counties is situated very close to the actual mid point of the county.
