Royaldunne why do you hate irish language though? I don't speak Turkish but when I went there I found myself singing their music in that language, didn't understand a single word but enjoyed it. it's like the Eurovision song contest I hate heading countries with their own languages singing in English it sounds so false and scripted where as when you get countries singing in their own language it always sounds different and enjoyable even though I don't understand it hill16no1man (Dublin) - Posts: 12665 - 13/04/2017 16:25:22 1979152 Link

But the games they're showing (club matches in winter, league matches in winter/early spring), the viewership these matches get, on average, might make TV broadcast only viable if its on a reduced budget. While Eir Sports also show some league matches, to their credit, I don't think the majority of matches TG4 broadcasts, would be shown on TV if they weren't doing it. Its a little depressing that threads like these always seem to go down the same route. Its a thread about people appreciating TG4's coverage, why does that have to turn into a crusade against the Irish language? We have so many channel options now, is one lousy channel that operates through the medium of a language that's unique to the country of broadcast, that much of an imposition? I am ambivalent to it. It doesn't define me , I have never had in my near on 50 years needed it for anything, I find it costs me money (paying for grinds, and all documents to be in it, etc) . Everyone to their own. If people want a dedicated Irish language, tv station , newspaper or whatever I am fine with that , btw just on that subject why is there no irish language newspaper?? Perhaps because it wouldn't be commercially viable cause very few people would buy it. Anyhow my argument is not against the Irish language but that a sport I love is diluting my enjoyment cause I cant understand the commentary, now I happen to be one of those people who like commentary on matches, (even if its just to disagree with them) I nor no one is asking for tg4 not to have the main program, (introduction analysis) or whatever in Irish, just to 70+ minutes of game been dual broadcast on a red button. Honestly is that too much to ask?? I think the main thing that the pro Irish brigade fear is that 90%+ would actually use the red button, hear is a idea have it as a subscription pay to hear thing, make extra revenue for them . You have a concept of 'modernity' which revolves around business and money. You often mention how successful you are and how much money you make in a year. Good luck to you if that's your definition of success. Others have a different measure of success and value their roots, heritage and traditions. There's commentary in English of TG4 streams for some games on TG4. Maybe they could try it for an U21 All Ireland Final to see if there's interest? Would probably be opposition from Sky, RTE, Sir broadcasting games in English during the summer. Not many here knocking TG4, just looking for a red button alternative commentary because their Irish isn't good. TG4 is an excellent station for me. People who possess a bit of pride in their country might consider learning their country's native language, particularly if it's a minority language, and if the majority language is the language of their neighbours who had conquered them for a long time. Not trying to make a political thing out it at all, but imagine if Spain ruled Portugal for ages, and now 95% of Portuguese spoke Spanish, and the 5% who spoke Portuguese had to fight to live their lives in their, national, language.
