Yes but it helps to look at the number of times a team was second too, gives an indication of whether they were anywhere near winning Us from 1950 to 1970 4x All-Ireland winners (1955, 1956, 1960, and 1968) 5x All-Ireland runners-up (1951, 1954, 1962, 1965, and 1970) 3x League winners (1955/'56, 1957/'58, and 1966/'67) 5x League runners-up (1950/'51, 1951/'52, 1954/'55, 1963/'64, and 1968/'69) Offaly from 1980 to 2000 4x All-Ireland winners (1981, 1985, 1994, and 1998) 3x All-Ireland runners-up (1984, 1995, and 2000) 1x League winners (1990/'91) 2x League runners-up (1980/'81 and 1987/'88) We got to nine All-Ireland finals and eight league finals in twenty years, they got to seven All-Ireland finals but only three league finals They did well to win four All-Irelands given how little depth they had and how small their pick was ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 927 - 02/03/2026 18:08:18 2659594 Link 0 |

Bookies no fools Prob right on antein being 300/1 and offaly 400/1 Highly they will be in the Joe mc final which this qyanteeing them a preliminary all ireland 1/4 final . Where as Offaly gave to contest leinster round Robin . Where they would gave to at least be 3rd to get yo same stage playing kilkenny dublin Galway and ourselves and kildare possibly having to win at least 3 of those games. . Offaly are better team than Antrim but the routes to prelims is tougher Formertownie (Wexford) - Posts: 543 - 02/03/2026 22:00:23 2659635 Link 0 |

Why do the 50's and 60's come up so often in the threads?

Yes. Wexford Weekly aren't always the most reliable lads for that kind of thing.

Lads wanting those days to return Id be guessing. Or just interested in history, especially local history. Or just only interested in successful hurling and are from Wexford. Why do you think? Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 18619 - 03/03/2026 10:51:50 2659690 Link 0 |

We were different though I suppose my argument is that they have always had six little depth You pretty much always played at least five games in the league so you'd need depth to win it Back in the old Championship, you didn't have to play as many matches as you did in the league and there were bigger gaps between games Those Offaly sides were very good but they had little in the way of depth, they were consistently reliant on the same 18 lads or so, they were always going to struggle in the old League because they didn't have the depth but they were able to get away with it in the Championship because they had fewer games and longer break between games We were as competitive in the league as we were in the Championship (Unlike Offaly), I don't think those Offaly sides would've won as many AIs under the current format because it would've stretched their depth, our Golden Era teams would've been able to compete better though And it's similar for Offaly these days, you can see in the league how it only takes a few injuries for them for their depth to be stretched ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 927 - 03/03/2026 12:57:40 2659739 Link 0 |

I think its far from over as well. We have a decent record in Ennis and the lads will think they are capable of getting a result. It's a big ask to get a result down there but if we can stay in the game im hoping coming down the home straight the fact we need a result our hunger will win out. I have a feeling it will be a tight game but i've been wrong before

If you look at the team lists in the wexford bible alot of the same lads played in most of the games in the 50s, League and Championship. But yes, it was way less games.

Clare will put out their strongest available team, as they did last year. It will be a great test for our younger lads. Any that do well will be under serious consideration for our championship team next month.
