I'm on the fence with this type of stuff. When you first pick up a hurl you're dreaming of walking up the steps of the Hogan in purple and gold. That's an achievable goal for these lads. What's the point of playing hurling at all if you're not trying to reach the top of the game? On the other hand I get what you're saying. It's very very hard starting out as a young adult in Ireland now and they essentially have to wait until they're finished hurling to even start. Who is taking a year out?

A year out is probably the wrong term in fairness. It's my understanding that Charlie mc and Eoin Ryan will be back hurling for Wexford in the future as will James Lawlor.

Hard to see it. Not many leave and come back unless they were injured. And if they do come back they usually leave again.

Liam og and Darren stamp are two that spring to mind. Both took a break early in their careers and game back even better.

Liam ogs break was largely down to injury. Stamp didnt take a year break, only a few months as far as I remember.

This forum has gone to the dogs, gone are the days when we'd have rumour's for weeks of a Paul Codd return. Rumours of Tom Dempsey being spotted at training etc... logger (Wexford) - Posts: 323 - 17/12/2025 10:53:05 2648621 Link 0 |

To be fair this year more than most years there are a lot of rumours regarding players leaving the squad and also players joining the squad

Liam ogs first break was to go traveling. Stamp played 03, then left the panel and didn't return until 07 if memory serves me Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 4106 - 17/12/2025 13:28:10 2648659 Link 0 |

Would be interested to see who is actually in the squad training at the moment. I suspected we will see a few debuts through the Walsh Cup and early rounds of the league

Mogie went travelling because he had done his ACL. He said that himself in his recent radio interview. Stamp played early 04 and left the panel, think there mightve been some sort of falling out. Seamus Murphy got him back in in 2005 when took over as manager. But Stamp broke his heel, a freak injury, against Galway in a challenge game and missed the Leinster Championship games against Laois and Kilkenny. We lost to Clare then in the Qualifier but I didnt go, I was at a bike show, can't remember if Stamp played or not. Neither took a year out when fully fit and ready to play. Didn't know about stamp's heel injury. I did know there was a falling out. We lost to Clare by 11 points that day. It was a miserable performance and I don't remember stamp being there but I'd have to look. He wasn't involved in 06 either. That was an awful season. There were only two highlights in that whole year. 1. Rory Jacob got a brilliant solo goal in the Leinster final. 2. Rory McCarthy got a top quality goal against Clare in spite of it being a miserable performance. That game was also the only time we ever wore that Wexford cheddar promotional jersey that you had to collect milk cartons for. Stamp started that game Rory scored that goal in. He got subbed off though.

Yep and most of those are valid criticisms. Although lack of coaches wanting to upskill might be a better way of describing that situation, rather than a lack of process.

You're right too Viking. My ability to recall entire starting 15s for individual games 20 years ago isn't what it used to be

Mines not perfect either, but I didnt remember him dropping off the panel except halfway through 2004. And definitely not for a few years. So I had to look it up! Up or down very few lads leave the panel and come back without leaving again soon enough. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 17875 - 22/12/2025 08:35:17 2649158 Link 0 |
