Replying To Magpie2:  "Barrett was asked several times to join the panel by Keith and he refused each time.
If he's not interested then that's it."
I get that but I think my post was in reply to another post which suggested that the Martin's players outside of Rory weren't up to the level required for intercounty (Could be mistaken on that one admittedly), it wasn't about whether it's realistic that he will hurl for Wexford next year (He in all likelihood won't)

Replying To Timbertony:  "He had potential but he's not a huge loss either. Very limited on the ball. That's another problem in the team, even when there is good movement close to goal the deliveries in can be very average. Mind you Chin's movement inside and first touch was very poor the last day. The top forwards like Gillane have no problem with a high ball going in and he's usually outnumbered too. He's not the quickest either but it's about movement in there not speed. Chin didn't make it stick and Redmond was lost next to him.

Early on with Rossi we had likes of Casey and Cian Byrne inside and that forced a change of tactics. We were forced to work the ball short and play diagonal ball into them. Then likes of Chin and Mac returned and we went back to the Tony Doran route one tactics."
He needs to improve on the ball but I'd rather that than a corner-back who's good on the ball but struggles to mark his man

If Fanning's out, I'm guessing it'll be Derry Mahon in goal given he was the sub-GK the last day, don't think they'd catapult Cian Byrne into goal if he's not sub-GK behind Fanning

I'm guessing Donohoe will be fit to start so if Shane Reck's out, he'll come in

I like Carley and think he has potential but he has an awful time of it on Saturday and I think you'd be asking for trouble putting him back in at corner-back next time out, either have him at wing-back or on the bench

Cian Molloy should come straight in anyway if fit IMO but if Damien's out, he'll absolutely need to come in

I like Diarmuid O'Leary but he's another one who learned on Saturday just how far he needs to raise his game at this level, tbf he was only on the extended panel for the U20s three years ago and this is his first season in the squad, needs to develop his S&C so wouldn't give up on him long-term but think it's best if we have him on the bench the next day

Jack Redmond has really struggled the last two days, wouldn't give up on him either as he doesn't have much experience (And it's not as if have depth like Limerick, Cork, or Clare on the bench) but he's another who might be best off on the bench for now

If Fanning and the two Recks are out, I'd probably go with something like the following:

Fanning

Donohoe
Jippo
Foley (Not a corner-back but we don't really have many who are)

Carley
Molloy
Wickham

Hearne
Lawlor

Jacko (Needs to up it BIG TIME)
Chin
Cillian Byrne

Rowley
Kevin Foley
Simon Roche

Half-back-line would be very experimental alright but we wouldn't have that many better options if we're being honest, these guys are supposed to be the future and some of the other guys who are maybe older and more experienced just aren't up to the level necessary IMO, may as well roll the dice, could work against us on Saturday week but may be beneficial long-term

No way of knowing if Barrett is good enough for Senior intercounty. He hasnt played any yet.
The worry would be that hed struggle physically, but no way of really knowing that at this stage.

Cornerback is a specialist position. Needs a certain level of stickiness, dirt and dog, as well as pace and agility. Best we have had in the last 10 years apart from Shane Reck, who also isnt great on the ball, was Breen from Adamstown. And he wasnt a flowery hurler either.
A cornerback being good on the ball would come after all that basic stuff for me too. It would be a bonus. But he has to be a great marker first and foremost.

Would love to see Molloy come back in he is a brilliant player and if he's fit would be great to have him back. A big ask but if he is fit he is one of the best we have and must start its backs our backs are to the wall now. Shane Reck breaking his thumb is rotten luck I would say he is unlikely to play but im really hoping Damien is able to play.
Im Also hoping Fanning is available his puck outs have been poor but would be a huge ask for Derry Mahon to come in such a big game. Surprised Cian Byrne isnt no 2 goalie from what I seen of him before

Presuming Shane Reck is the only absentee I would now go with

Fanning

Donohoe
Jippo
C Foley

D Reck
Molloy
Lawlor

Hearne
Carley

Jacko
K Foley
Chin

Rowley
Simon Roche
Cillian Byrne

Day is kind of gone where a corner back just had to be a stopper and nothing else. Limerick have Nash, Cork have Joyce. These lads all well capable of playing out the pitch but are a serious asset on the short puck outs. Maybe one stopper and one hurler. KK kind of did us tactically in there too. Cody and Reid drifted out in the second half leaving us with Carley & Foley defending two on two. Can't even remember which of them Keoghan roasted. In hindsight Liam Ryan should have stayed where he was and let Reid off.
