Looking Forward To 2026

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A podcast is suggesting up to 10 counties could be in contention for the All Ireland football championship next year. Hard to argue against that. Dublin and Armagh were knocked out at the quarter final stage in recent years. 2007 was the last time the All Ireland was retained without home advantage. On this basis, Kerry will be underdogs. Tyrone, Armagh, Donegal and Dublin will be favourites. Galway and Mayo will be in contention as well. Monaghan, Derry and Meath will be looking to mount a challenge as well.
A good few weeks of club action now to enjoy.

Reports this morning suggesting Andy Moran is the favourite to take the Mayo reins.

Kerry are hot favourites for next year and barring injuries to the Cliffords, O'Shea, White, Foley or Joe O'connor, this will be the case until they are knocked out. Dublin, Mayo and Galway have greatest scope for improvement with any of these teams capable of making a final. Tyrone likely to push on too.
Will be interesting to see the Ulster style defensively next year with Kerry having humiliated four teams this year. The Leinster championship could be very interesting next year too.

As I've said before, a lot of people have short memories. Only a few weeks ago Donegal, Dublin, Galway and Armagh were the favourites to make the semi finals. Tyrone were probably the next favourites to make the semi finals. These five will probably start 2026 as the strong favourites. Pundits worth their salt won't be selecting the 2025 champions as favourites. Lessons have been learned after Armagh were knocked out at the quarter final stage.
Respect for opponents is important. Before Roscommon visited Killarney, I said it was all about what they would bring as challengers. I think that was accepted as fair comment.
Some people were scoffing at me for predicting that Cavan would cause Mayo problems. Low and behold, Cavan delivered.
Finally, I was in the minority who wasn't surprised by the Tullamore result. Meath's good form was evident.

Cavan were ready and waiting. Full deserving winners. Far be it from me to say "I told you so" to anyone who doubted it.

2026 could see provincial winners clashing in Round 2A, depending on the draw. At least 2 "strong contenders" could be out before the quarter finals depending on the draw. The "blunt instrument" Burns & Co want!

Meath were moving well in advance of Tullamore match and really peaked here against an understrength and flat Kerry on the day. But anyone who was at that match would agree that Meath were excellent on the day. I think hype, inexperience and some nerves prevented Meath from performing near their best versus Donegal. If Meath get a few things right over the winter, improve depth with a few more quality young players and get injured ones back, they could be a force again next year but must work on consistency. Playing div 1 crucial for any team.

As a fellow Kerryman I have to say your posts are becoming tiresome. You should be celebrating instead of trying to give cheap shots and post some teal ràimeash.Have some respect and give some respect.

No surprise in the Ger Brennan announcement I suppose. As long as Dublin get to the quarter finals, spring time games in Croke Park are an advantage, it has to be said.

Division 2 will be a tough battle next year. Tyrone and Derry will be looking to bounce back. Meath and Cavan will definitely have a say in that. Kildare and Offaly will be looking to retain at least. Cork despite the recent Munster seeding advantage could be in a fight to avoid the drop. Limerick and Clare will welcome a shot at them in the league.

Unfortunately Meath redevelopment of pairs tailteann means we won't have a home game, so promotion will be extra tough. The draw is very important for us with that in mind.

Come off it . Where were Cavan after they beat us ?

They deserved the win . Though we didn't show up for obvious reasons . You'd need to be blind to not know the troubles behind the scenes in mayo at the time . I was at the Cavan game. Never seen the guys look so flat and pissed off even before the start of the game as I did that day . I go to my mate think we could loose this not a happy a camp. What happened ......

I thought Tullamore was a home from home for Meath! It seemed like that in the middle of June.
Croke Park is an interesting league home ground choice for Meath. If it's a Meath v Dublin Leinster final next year, it'll essentially be a home ground for both of you!! There can't be any Glenn Ryan type fair criticism of match venue.
I can't see Cork surviving in Division 2 next year. If playing away from Pairc Tailteann goes against Meath - Kildare, Louth and Offaly will look to capitalise. A precarious position. Looking to gain promotion but Leinster rivals looking to cause problems.
