People posting that they hope Monagan get Galway in AI quarter finals. Hate to dampen your spirits but there are preliminary quarter finals to be played first and I predict a shock result in one of those. One team played great football at the weekend and are in 3rd place and according to those who know their goose is cooked. I will be betting. border Gael (Monaghan) - Posts: 918 - 17/06/2025 18:40:57 2618819 Link 0 |
50m penalty scrapped! Excellent decision. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3633 - 17/06/2025 20:12:27 2618835 Link 0 |
Play the format…does not matter how you do it. I remember something similar was said in 2001…didn't bother ye then. Lose one game or two….it makes no difference if that team ends up as all Ireland champions.

Two bad teams going at it can always look like 'great football'. It was notable that Down were least impressive in the last 10-15 mins v Monaghan, when the game was in the melting pot, the hallmark of a team that's lost most of their competitive ganes in 2025. I predict no shocks at the weekend.

You mentioned a player should not have to hand the ball to an opponent after an infringement but to instead put the ball on the ground. When the ball is handed to an opponent the player can as the rule says " solo and go " and this speeds up the game massively instead of the ball being placed on the ground. You obviously don't go to many matches because you would see the benefit of this rule change? Scenicparish (Donegal) - Posts: 593 - 17/06/2025 21:56:50 2618865 Link 0 |
Nothing wrong with the intent of the rule but Central Council has tonight overwhelmingly decided that the 50m penalty was disproportionate. Infringements will be punished by a free from the spot. Serves same purpose with the ridiculous spectacle - and I quote Jack O'Connor here - of a minor technical offence 80 metres from goal being punished by a certain score now gone. Sounds like Div 1 is either overrated or teams become exhausted from the intensity. Two groups of 8 would be a sweet spot for the developing and developed teams. omahant (USA) - Posts: 3304 - 17/06/2025 22:57:56 2618877 Link 0 |
Monaghan won (+19 pts diff) a group, in which they were by a distance, the highest seeded team. My 'seeding' there based on NFL performance 2025. Two of the teams in that group are in div3 for 2026. A third team in that group avoided relegation to div3 on points difference. Despite the horrendous lack of quality in this group, relative to at least two other Sam Maguire groups, we're now being encouraged to believe that last Sunday's Down/Monaghan game was the greatest game of football ever played, probably since the famous '77 semi between Kerry and Dublin. Down excellent bet to beat Galway. Down look much more positive in their play than Galway at the moment with Galway struggling on own kickout. Down at home and Galway not quite at it could be a recipe for the first big knockout shock!

How do you know that it didn't bother some of us?

Not fully Barney. I think its only from a mark.I still think theres a 50 m penalty for a breach and not handing back the ball.

Jeez what's with all the Galway lads taking shots at Monaghan, just because one Monaghan poster had the audacity to predict Down at home might cause an upset? Ye are an awful sensitive bunch over there... patk (Monaghan) - Posts: 945 - 17/06/2025 23:55:20 2618891 Link 0 |
Sure, he's always posting! How would he have time to go to a game? I'm in America. At least, I have a valid excuse, and I still have only a small % of the posts that fella has!

Will Cavan manage to keep it under 20 points at the weekend? It is not a nice place to be on the end of a Kerry backlash. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2313 - 18/06/2025 03:30:53 2618894 Link 0 |
It's fairly obvious you don't go or have very little knowledge of the game… handing the ball back to facilitate a 'solo and go' is causing a huge problem as players are either dropping the ball intentionally or soling straight into their opponents to gain the ridiculous 50m advantage… Solo and go should only apply to a player fouled in possession and not when they get the ball cleaned and handed back to them like a spoiled child in the playground… It's the most ridiculous and embarrassing aspect of any sport currently being played…. Just place the ball on the ground or give it to the referee…

I haven't missed a Donegal match this year unlike like yourself supporting your team from your armchair. Placing the ball on the ground or handing it to the ref slows the game up. You probably cannot see that handing the ball to an opponent means there is practically no break in play and the player can simply " solo and go " again just as the rules change suggested. You are entitled to your opinion but you are not right every time. Scenicparish (Donegal) - Posts: 593 - 18/06/2025 09:35:33 2618910 Link 1 |
Kerry players dropping like flies, Cavan have some decent 2 point kickers. That performance up in Meath was as poor as I've seen from Kerry in 20 years, I'm not too sure about a backlash, lucky if there's 6,000 there Saturday. dolfos (Longford) - Posts: 136 - 18/06/2025 10:08:31 2618919 Link 0 |
Just saw a stat Breff... This will be Cavan's 5th game in the championship against Division 1 opposition. And if kerry win, they will make the All Ireland 1/4 final without having played a single Division 1 team. Also, Cavan lost 3 of those 4 games and are still in the competition. Next year's format will hopefully prevent such lopsided draws etc. On a side note, who are the favourites for SAM in your opinion.? I think the winner will come from the Armagh/Kerry 1/4 Final. No offence but I cant see Cavan beating a wounded kerry team down in Killarney.... Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4331 - 18/06/2025 10:18:15 2618925 Link 0 |
ALL the Galway lads? I don't think so.
