The new hurling league is a great format as it gives more exposure to counties. 2 up and 2 down from each leagues makes it more fluid. I do think the leagues should be Div 1 2 3 4 5 instead of '1B'. GaA247 (Cork) - Posts: 63 - 22/02/2025 11:24:51 2592414 Link 1 |
It was about time hurling opened up after years of glass ceilings. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8569 - 22/02/2025 12:04:09 2592420 Link 1 |
Absolutely. And the OP is right, I don't get this 1b xxxx at all. It's div 2.

If naming it 1B is the price to pay for smashing the glass ceiling. So be it.

True. Still childish all the same. It's the National Hurling League. Not Go Games.

Renaming Div 2 as "Div 1C" could make us warm and fuzzy - look, a crowded 21-team top table - heck, who needs the HDC? :) omahant (USA) - Posts: 3105 - 22/02/2025 20:40:40 2592510 Link 0 |
Donegal look like they will avoid relegation and stay in Division 3 after a massive win against Kerry - a game that would not happen in previous league formats. GaA247 (Cork) - Posts: 63 - 23/02/2025 16:04:45 2592624 Link 2 |
Off topic but jesus the media love in with Offaly is getting cringe worthy. Yeah they beat a 14 man Dublin in the league by a point but that could have gone anyway. This is an Offaly team that have contested a minor All Ireland & won an u20. It's not exactly a massive shock. Our hurlers beat Waterford ( a far better team than Dublin) & got about 20 seconds on TV. We also drew with the mighty Offaly but that apparently was a bad performance by Offaly. The whole country seems to have a massive want for Offaly to be good again but I'm not certain it will happen. I'd love nothing better than to meet them in league final again as we have regularly beaten them over the last few years & have no fear of them. Unfortunately our game against Laois fell to the weather today so we will have 4 games on top of each other so unlikely to push for promotion. In the meantime we can all sit back & enjoy the mighty Offaly.... carlo (Carlow) - Posts: 244 - 23/02/2025 22:51:23 2592801 Link 0 |
Ah no you surely can't say those things about the Biffos :-D

I didn't think you should begrudge Offaly their moment. Its the redemption arc that the media love. You've already shown you're as good as them. You've taken 3 points from the top 2 in the division; the promotion push is on.

Be delighted to see Donegal remain in division 3, they will need 6 points not sure where they will pick up last 2. The Derry game is not a given for them. Interesting to see how my own county does, it's in their own hands let's see if they can see it out BaileCrann (Down) - Posts: 62 - 24/02/2025 15:17:35 2592931 Link 0 |
God it must hurt to be so begrudging. All hurling people are delighted Offaly are on the way back can only be good for Leinster hurling .We all love to see Carlow comming up as well the more teams the better.

At least we are all in the mix or at least four which is good for the game and I include Offaly in that. It could be said Carlow and Offaly are in pole position having only dropped one point. However all the games have to be played. Hurling will be the winner with this surge.

maybe it's because they have history of winning all ireland's won under 20 last year beaten the year before and have a good chance to win 3 in a row this year in leinster. don't be such a begrudger be great if Carlow came up as well iam sure if Carlow won all irelands they would get the same . what Joe Canning and Mcmanus were saying they were in christy ring cup 3 years ago won that won Mcdonagh cup have been in 3 all irelands in a row underage and are a win away from division 1. as for you saying it won't happen maybe not but i tell you one thing they will before carlow will . carlow are a good team but have nothing coming like what offaly have . we have to wait and see how they do again dublin and laois who Carlow get it very hard to beat. you see in the next few years how far offaly will be from Carlow when them young player's hit there prime. they still have Screeney ben connelly cahill cillian kielty to come back who didn't play again carlow this year. oneshot (Tyrone) - Posts: 7 - 25/02/2025 00:29:44 2593062 Link 0 |
As a fellow Carlow man/woman I have to say that's an embarrassing take there Carlo. Offaly are back and are back to stay based on the amount of young talent coming through. We might have the indian sign on them in recent years and I hope it lasts at bit longer but in reality we're close to maxing out on our capabilities at the moment whereas Offaly have way more scope and are only beginning an upward curve for the next decade at senior level. They may not win any senior Leinsters or an All Ireland in that time but they'll be competitive at Liam McCarthy for the foreseeable future. I stand by my main point. The media are falling over themselves to praise Offaly. Nothing against Offaly per say & we all know there History etc.. On the night of one of Carlows biggest ever league wins over a proper Div 1 county the panel on Rte after about 5 seconds of praise for Carlow turned the whole conversation around to speak about Offaly & their progress. God forbid to give Carlow ( who will fall away as a previous poster commented as we just don't have the numbers to continually compete) their day in the spotlight. I remember after the Mcdonagh final in 2023 it nearly killed the commentators that Carlow actually beat Offaly as it would have " been good for the game to see Offaly back" Offaly will be back but jesus what Carlow have done with 5 & sometimes 6 senior teams in unbelievable. Give them their dues. Offalya will look after themselves carlo (Carlow) - Posts: 244 - 25/02/2025 13:33:53 2593145 Link 0 |
For the record I never said it won't happen, I said I'm not certain it will... Offaly will look after themselves & saying they will go further than Carlow is not rocket science, they have just won an u20 All aireland & have won Senior All Irelands in the not too distant past. I'm just trying to get a bit of Credit for a small county who pull seriously above their weight in Hurling. Isn't it great to have another untraditional team competing for a while...hurling can't be a closed door with just the same few counties every year. Look at Donegal beating Kerry that's brilliant to see. We will eventually fall away again as its a numbers game & we dont have them. The media then can continue to praise the established counties & pay lip service to the rest

agree but it's not offaly or offaly people that are talking or saying how great they are to the media . as for small pick offaly won all irelands with all the clubs with in a 5 mile radius of each other which takes some doing.

Have to disagree with you there. I have some close family & a few friends from Offaly & they are talking about winning a Senior All Ireland within 5 years. Be great if they did but I don't know. One swallow doesn't make a summer. I recall limerick won 3 u21 All Irelands in a row back in the early 00,s but nothing came of it at senior level. Similarly Wexford won 3 Leinster u21 in a row & got 1 Leinster Senior out of it. There are no guarantees with underage success. I'd love to see them compete in Leinster as we badly need someone to challenge KK but winning All Irelands is a bit off yet. Overall I'd love to see Carlow, laois, Wesmeath & Kildare to become really competitive but it's a hard ask with the smaller playing pools & football comes first in most cases.

Moving the age grade from 21 to 20 was a huge thing. That Offaly under 20 team were fairly small. The likelihood of them impacting Cork, Clare or Limerick at senior level is far less than it was for the good Limerick or Wexford 21 teams. I hope they continue their resurgence though. Their 20s beat ours by a point and our players are coming into a better set up and struggle to make an impact. That will be even more difficult for those Offaly lads.
