Regardless of size of fish or pond the income from hurling through gate receipts and National League brought in just €550,000 in 2025.
The income for football was €156,000 in 2025.
Yet the expenditure is similar enough.
2026 will be closer of course as the hurlers were in 1B not 1A and footballers in 3 not 4. But until that income gap is closed the County Board have to feed the cash cow that in return helps supply the County Board etc.
If the hurling team are consistently in the lower divisions then there will be less income and thus less money for them but also for the footballers. And do you think sponsors will be happy if the hurling team are on TV only 2/3 times a year instead of 4/5.??
Ideally both Wexford teams are in Division 1 and bringing in €550,000 each. That would be the perfect scenario..

Of course decisions are based on the financial reality. With that in mind, I would suggest that ( nationally) our footballers are a small fish in a big pond whereas our hurlers are a medium sized fish in a much smaller pond."
Thats about it, but critically its hurling that gets more general public support in the county, which is reflected in the attendances at both club and county games in each code. And therefore gate receipts and streaming income, which is linked to advertising. This difference is then reflected in commercial income also.

Which code were the takings from the 1st league games last year assigned to ? It was a double header.

Also your idea of feeding the cash cow could be dangerous. The net result is that the cash cow will continue to thrive and the others will eventually die of starvation.

Ok . So we don't feed the cash cow and both die of starvation..
But seriously if the footballers can become a Division 2 team and stay there plus play in the Sam Maguire later stages they will be well able to look after themselves income wise .
