Remember that Carlow got relegated from the McCarthy Cup by finishing bottom of the Leinster teams while Waterford stayed up as bottom of Munster. There should be a playoff match to decide such an important relegation. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1529 - 11/02/2025 11:19:30 2590561 Link 0 |
That's a valid point although it has to be admitted that Munster is currently at a far higher standard, Even though Waterford are not great at the moment, they had a few close calls and played very well at times. Dublin or Wexford would currently be hard put to win a game in Munster, never mind Carlow. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3427 - 11/02/2025 12:31:12 2590578 Link 1 |

Barney did you forget that Tipp finished behind us. We beat the now favourites and finalist's and were a point behind the All-Ireland winners. Now I have no crystal ball or neither do you as to how we will do this year or how non great Waterford will be in the championship but these are the facts from our last rodeo.

It doesn't matter who finishes bottom Canuck, a play off would be the fairest solution.

I know where Waterford finished! I also mentioned how well Waterford played at times and didn't get rub of green especially against Clare Someone else mentioned them being last, My general point stands regardless. Which is that Carlow not only be highly unlikely to beat Waterford or any other Munster team and that other than Cats no other Leinster team would do particularly well at moment in that cauldron. Carlow did draw with Kilkenny. Anything might happen in a one off relegation game. I agree it's highly unlikely that whoever finishes last in Leinster would beat whoever finishes last in Munster, but in 2023 had we lost by a point to Kilkenny in the last game we would've finished last. We mightve beaten Waterford after that performance against Kilkenny, which was the 1st game all championship we had near a full team. We would have been at full strength for the relegation game.

You are probably correct. Without patronizing them Carlow deserves great credit with the resources they have. If I were them I would take great encouragement from their draw over Kilkenny in last year's championship. More than a league victory over a Waterford team with 9 changes. Not taking from that either just putting it in perspective. We have limited resources also with 12 senior clubs but realistically it would be hard to say 6 of them meet that standard. Kilkenny are the exception but anyone believing they pay any attention to football is delusional. Also have less pressure from other sports. Maybe that is the way for small counties. One code. Cork should be winning every All-Ireland and Dublin not too far behind. Carlow and Wexford being fairly equal at both codes and splitting resources are disadvantaged. We have been fair to football without great success and have great players and good teams. Until recently the county was spilt in halves with football west and hurling east. "Kilkenny are the exception but anyone believing they pay any attention to football is delusional. Also have less pressure from other sports" Any attention? And how have Kilkenny got less pressure from other sports?

"More than a league victory over a Waterford team with 9 changes. Not taking from that either just putting it in perspective." Just on this, and for further perspective as you have repeatedly made your point on here about the perspective that Waterford were down numbers v Carlow, (and in fairness i know you say you're not taking anything away from Carlow) but ..... that Carlow team that beat Waterford contained 8 of the team that drew with KK last summer in the championship. Carlow definitely won't be going down the route of one code focus. We're a small county but Clonmore to St. Mullins is still a long way and there's no chance Clonmore would take up hurls at the expense of football nor St. Mullins down hurls to play football. Its in the culture and that won't change. It blurs a bit in the centre of the county but we're dual and will be staying that way, thankfully.

I'd say very very few in KK would give up a promising career or a chance of one as a senior county hurler to take a chance on possibly "making it" in soccer or rugby. Likewise in Kerry with young footballers. In other counties, Carlow for one anyway, it would be the opposite unfortunately. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1470 - 13/02/2025 16:24:39 2590856 Link 0 |
St Mullins were Intermediate in Football last year

I don't know where you are reading that. I never once used any excuse about you beating us. In fact the opposite. I commend Carlow on being a good team that showed much more skill than Waterford. What I did say is that Carlow should take much more encouragement from a result against a championship Kilkenny side. I honestly don't know what team Carlow will have in the championship but I would be fairly sure the Waterford team will be a lot different. Thus the reference to the Kilkenny result. There was no other post where I reference the Waterford team other than my annoyance from Waterford media offering it up. Again congrats on your league win over Waterford and I hope Carlow wins promotion. However don't accuse me off making excuses for losing and I promise I won't mis quote or misrepresent what you said or will ever say. I know. And took some severe hidings because they never trained. They don't really put any effort into football, they have no underage football structure at all, their underage players don't even play football for another area team etc. so there's no football at underage. The football is just a bit of craic for the senior hurlers when the hurling championship is over and the split season in Carlow allows it.

Kilkenny don't pay any attention to football. They didn't even field a team for years. Less pressure from other sports because hurling is well and truly king. I commend them for that and wish Wexford was the same. We're a dual county in a very real sense in that the vast majority of players are involved in both codes. We also have the largest Sunday league soccer outside Dublin Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3381 - 13/02/2025 21:51:59 2590896 Link 0 |
I didn't accuse you of making excuses. I pointed out that, while you say you take nothing from Carlow, you nevertheless repeatedly provide a certain perspective on the result by pointing out that Waterford were down a certain number. I've pointed out that there's another perspective … Carlow were down similar numbers from our championship team.
