Replying To CTGAA10: "RTÉ sent 41 different people to cover the World Cup play off game..is there anyway of finding out the cost involved? There is a World Cup coming up and every game will be available free to air..even on last day of group games when matches start at same time,RTÉ will cover them all.. I've mentioned the news channel before,it has been used so why not use this if matches clash, like next Sunday with 3 matches on at 2 in Leinster and 2 matches at 4 in Munster.. Watching some of RTÉ coverage at moment,it looks like everything being done on the cheap..Colm cooper watched the Munster final from Hyde park on the day of Connacht final,he was an analyst but watched it like I did.. For me even though I don't know what is being said most of the time, the coverage on tg4 is better.." Pundits on an RTE Sunday double header have been watching the first match from the venue of the second match for donkey's years, so there was nothing unusual about Gooch's 'predicament' in that respect.

The issue for RTE is not that they don't have enough channels to show multiple matches simultaneously or shortly after each other.
It's a costs issue. First buying the rights to show the matches in the first place, and then sending cameras/crew/etc. to the different venues, as well as having more production crew at work back in the studios.
The upcoming World Cup is different. Far cheaper on a per-match basis to buy a "ready to air" feed, which is why Virgin Media sought that from the GAA. And if they've bought a package that gives them the rights to show every match, would be foolhardy not to use every channel available (both broadcast & online) to actually show them.

The people who defend gaa plus are usually the people who want allianz gone. If you think the gaa are entitled to make money you can't really complain about the gaa saving millions in insurance from allianz. Gaa make much more from allianz than they will ever get from gaa plus

Jarlath Burns: Older fans not complaining about GAA+ Burns said having every championship game available to watch on television or through streaming is "not a good model". GAA president Jarlath Burns said the association's own research shows that elderly people are not complaining about games being shown on GAA+.
"I know that we have received some criticism, older members not being able to (watch GAA+) but that's not what our own research is showing us," Burns told the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture, and Sport.
"We have actually done a deal with Broadband Ireland that everybody who gets a package with Broadband Ireland gets free GAA+. It's free in hospitals, it's free in old people's homes.
"We are not getting feedback from older people to say that they are complaining about it. They are just happy to be able to watch the games. In fact they are now complaining that we're not doing enough games on GAA+."
Burns said having every championship game available to watch on television or through streaming is "not a good model", adding that at some point, Gaelic games would simply become "wallpaper".
"Our members are quite happy - and they have told us in all of the research that we have done - with the fact that we have 300 free-to-air games every year," said Burns.
"We have 180 championship games and 30 match days. We simply cannot show every game and also we have a question that we have to ask ourselves: How much is enough? Because we don't want to show every game live on television.
"We are a participation sport. We are not a sport for sedentary people who just want to sit and watch it on their television."
Burns continued: "If we are going to make GAA+ a free-to-air service, we are going to have to take out a significant number of millions out of our income. And we're going to ask ourselves the question, what do we not fund?
"We will be renegotiating the broadcast arrangements next year. We will take into consideration everything that has been said.
"Ideally we would love to show even more than 300 games a year, free-to-air. We would love to show more than that.
"But it is impossible under the current scenario where we are working with a public service broadcaster."
GAA director general Tom Ryan added: "Our natural disposition is to be self-sufficient and I suppose that's part of the imperative behind GAA+ as well - we try to make our own way."
What you guys think of this? I can't understand why they are not able to show more game? County boards manage it.

Next contract should allow for more games especially in scenarios where the match is sold out pre game eg Donegal v Cork.
Take out the expense which hopefully they can actually curb, game for game, coverage for coverage I think GAA+ is superior to RTE.
In fact I would go as far as saying RTE have ruined nearly all their sports with their poor choices of pundits and commentators. RTE only a decade ago had box office panels for the two GAA codes, soccer and rugby and they ruined it on themselves and banished the talent or the lads grew too old and havent been replaced.
I find myself tuning in to the extra channels now to watch ITV over RTE for the soccer too though they have a few dogdy panellists too.

The GAA is entitled to fully maximise the commercial revenue they can earn from the product they own. What part of that do you not understand?

Nobody asked them to show all matches and in times gone by they didnt either but the question I ask is how the condensed season plays into all this conundrum?? One madness scenario creates another...8 matches in one weekend is crazy. Armagh travel over 400km to Kerry this wknd and if they win its Croke park the following weekend. The idea of a split season facilitating player welfare is nothing but a fallacy. The GAA are slowly but surely roasting the golden goose.
