Wexford Hurling 2025

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Sean o brien is out for the minors tomorrow and rhys wickam as well as far as I know.our two best forwards. As for tonight, all I can say is a win is a win and it was nice to leave wexford park after winning a championship match but by God am I concerned about playing kk. Just on a side note we are very quick to jump on Simon Donohue (I still think he not up to the standard)but credit where credit is due, I taught he man was excellent in the second half tonight.

Don't think we have ever recovered from that moment. Players seem devoid of confidence, first touch awful today. First half against Galway best forgotten"
No we were 2nd best up to that point in Parnell.

Obviously deflating and doesn't help when the goal is given. We were britsl v Galway. A good team with their back to the wall would rally in the next game.....we didn't

Then today another opportunity to rally and we nearly got beaten by a team just out of Joe Mac.

The reality is and it pains me to say it......we.just aren't a good side with a good manager.

Plenty of young hurlers and let's hope those lads develop or we are gone

I'm a bit confused as to what our management's plan is. We played a two man full forward line, Byrne and Casey, who couldn't win any ball. There's a core of experienced players largely carrying things: Fanning, Rory O'Connor, Chin, Foley. Rory, Chin, Foley and Jacko in a 4 man half forward line. I don't get why there isn't one ball winner put into the full forward line. Ball going in just came straight back out, bar one or two Byrne flashes.

Midfield was okay.

Backline was in trouble throughout. Defenders fouled all evening when Offaly players ran at us. Very few examples of good defending. Also alarming was how often defenders didn't trust themselves to clear ball, and went back to Fanning. He did really well, but several passes to him just put him under pressure. They should have been played out by the backs, not sent back to a keeper under pressure.

Our hurling looked not sharp at all. Handling was poor, balls fumbled or miscontrolled throughout. That has to go back to preparation and coaching.

Watching them today we needed either Chin or Kevin Foley at 6 (Reck was v poor I thought) and the other at 11, and Rory at 14. There would be a strong spine then with a ball winner in each line. I'd have started Mac at wing forward too, if he was okay to play, give us a focal point for puckouts.

Freetaking was really poor. Is Paul Codd the last proper top class freetaker we've had?

I thought it odd that the bench wasn't really used too. Several lads were going poorly. Worked out in the end I suppose, but took a goal right at the death."
Shocking that more subs weren't brought on earlier. There were a few lads who were letting the game pass them by.

We're worse and Everton are hopeless.

Don't know if the backline was in that much trouble, 1-17 is a poor total at this level (Although our 2-17 is also a poor score) and 1-06 of that was from play, 1-02 of which came from their starting six forwards

Wexford basically a Joe Mac team pretending to be a Liam McCarthy side. I think we will be relegated within the next 2 years, at underage there is no sign of any improvement, week in week out there is constant bluff about coaching and development squads, yet Wexford have won one Leinster minor title in 40 years, haven't won an Asl Ireland at minor and U20 since 1968, haven't won a League in 52 years and one senior All Ireland in 57 years. We are miles away from being serious challengers, that display today against Limerick or Cork would have seen us wiped out, 1-2 in 30 minutes and no points from play. Sad decline of a once great hurling county, but fact. Relegation might best best thing, wake everyone up.

Not really, we weren't good enough to win that game, even if it didn't count we still would've lost by a point.

I'd blame management more so for that game, they didn't really try and rectify the situation until the damage was done…Not pushing up on their puckouts cost us big time and a lot of their points they got without any real pressure being put on the shooter also, for the other two goals I'd say Hetherton and Currie couldn't believe the space they were given. Tbh it felt like a carbon copy of the Clare game in QF in 22. After Dunbars goal we all but just sat back. Chins 21 at the end did put some gloss on the scoreline also.

I did expect our annual retaliatory performance to come last week, instead it was just a complete disaster between players and management.

I think tonight shows that Offaly are really going to be in the mix going forward not necessarily contending for titles year in year out but a real thorn in the side of ourselves and probably Dublin.
