A lot of talk about Crowley v Prendergast, but a more pertinent question might be which of these two can ever become a shadow of the player that Sexton was. The answer increasingly seems to be neither. With an ordinary no10, this Irish side is starting to look increasingly average. It's looking like an opportune time right now to reinfuse our backline options with 3or4 new young southern hemisphere talents, because Bundee, Lowe and Gibson Park won't last forever either.

In fairness there were multiple reasons. Adams and others saw the potential of political struggle after the hunger strikes. Add to that PIRA was infiltrated to the highest levels. You also had conflict fatigue and a spate of attacks on ordinary Catholics in the early 90s by loyalists. You also had the realpolitik of the end of the Cold War. US tightening up on funds for separtist movements and determined to settle the conflict here. Less allies for republicans to deal with globally after the USSR gone. The likes of Gaddafi completely isolated. They could exit stage left and get something out of it or be ejected through the back door.

Even if the Brits keft the 6 Cos the Provos were never going to achieve a "32 County Socialist Republic" because most people in Ireland were/are opposed to such a mythical place.

Why did Ireland opt to play the world champions in their unfamiliar white kit and let South Africa play in their famous green jerseys. Didn't affect the result one iota but seems an odd decision. tireoghainabu (Tyrone) - Posts: 440 - 23/11/2025 11:15:26 2645725 Link 2 |

A 32 county Republic is not a "mythical place." It was voted for by the Irish people in 1918. The socialist part was stuck on later, ironically by the same people who not only abandoned a 32 county republic, but also any pretence to be socialist! Sinn Féin are a run of the mill centre left liberal part. They have at last found their true home along with Bacik and Cairns and Murphy. Pity they didn't spare their own people and everyone else all the wasted lives in deaths, prison, and so on before it was handed over to carpet baggers who never had anything to do with the movement when it was pursuing its sole objective of Irish unity. In my opinion, SF are liberal Unionists who hate the responsibility of leadership, in Dublin or London. They like to sue people. Is this the plan for the next 100 years? The likes of Martin McGuinness were decent people in terms of political vision, but that was the past. I'm thrilled that the gun is out of Irish politics; that's huge, and I do appreciate the SF's role in this. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1771 - 23/11/2025 12:52:38 2645735 Link 2 |

It's usually agreed by both teams beforehand. When we played them in South Africa last year, they changed for both tests and we wore green.

That has been Ireland's game for years, Conor Murray was lauded and all he seemed to do was drive the ball into the sky and they'd gain five yards and then do it all over again. Some people must like it. It is fairly tedious

Lots of people stopped watching hurling too, since throwing replaced proper handpassing, and since the steps rule is rarely applied, and fellas can usually overcarry for miles. Ground hurling disappeared with the Offaly side of the 90's, we we haven't seen a well executed drop shot since Pa O'Neill retired from KK no6.

As in a drop shot into a team mates hand, or a long drop shot somewhere up the pitch? Adrian Fenlon was still very good off the ground in the noughties. But overall I personally far prefer watching most of the hurling games Im watching these days compared to most of the games I watched back in the 90s. Up to people themselves what they want to watch, Ive friends who never enjoyed watching hurling and still dont now. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 17601 - 23/11/2025 22:04:23 2645823 Link 0 |
