I would have thought that the only motivation for working hard is financial. I have rarely if ever met anyone in my life who worked hard for fun or relaxation, and I am nearly 80.

With the cost of 3rd level education here we definitely dont have equality of opportunity.

How many people do you know that have passion for their work? We all need money. That's a very small part of what you get out of achieving something. I'll put it this way. Would you rather be cared for by a nurse who's motivated by their burning desire to help people, or a farmer's child who entered it for a good pension? It's much more than that. Where you live, what your parents did, whether you can afford grinds. We're competing in a race where one cohort has an insurmountable head start, and those furthest back aren't even aware the race is happening.
