Can anyone clarify why DG is not on the panel? 222 (UK) - Posts: 844 - 02/02/2023 12:03:57 2455976 Link 0 |
Davy Garland has got numerous chances under Banty and just didn't produce. Physically he has difficulty winning primary ball & scoring under pressure at county level. Pity because he definitely has skill. As far as I know it was his decision not to t commit this year. I'd be much more concerned as to why young Mulligan isn't on the current panel. I know his confidence dropped last year but very young & lots of skill. All star minor remember. Also Grimes from Killanny, another All Star minor, what's happened with him ? Davy garland got numerous chance under banty is not true, he got plenty of games but never asked to do the thing he's good at, putting scores on the board, banty played him as half forward v Donegal in MC Kenna cup last year, doing loads of tracking back First year at DCU, it didn't go too well for Davy , but by year 2 the management had figured out how to play him, man of the match in sigerson cup He's too good not to involved Regarding the younger lads, I d be more interested in seeing 23/24/25 years old , who have finished college , got jobs , played 5 or 6 years of senior football being tried , think it's a very small number of 20 /21 years olds who can compete with div 1 inter county players , Monaghan78 (Monaghan) - Posts: 22 - 03/02/2023 09:25:21 2456104 Link 0 |
Like all Monaghan's best forwards, Garland did a stint at half back under Seamus. He played wing half back against Dublin in 2019. Does that count as 'a chance' though?

Most of them players in their mid twenty, are generally burnt out. The club competition seems to go for ever in Monaghan, and the underage football is just relentless , game after game, no wonder there is a massive drop off. The day of players giving up there job career or there free time with no reward or thanks is gone. if you get 2 or 3 years that's the best you can hope for. patmouse (Monaghan) - Posts: 122 - 03/02/2023 13:16:33 2456151 Link 0 |
What happened Barry McGinn. He looked a good underage prospect and played Sigerson with UCD. He did the cruciate a few years ago. not same player since? FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2872 - 03/02/2023 13:37:27 2456156 Link 0 |
Good player but maybe not the physical tools for the highest level. Very skillful but not as skillful as McCarron and not as fast as a McCarthy or McManus. Maybe didn't get a fair crack either after some injuries.

If Davy had have gotten as much game time as Shane Carey we would have had a better return from him, he's probably not a yes and that's where the problem lies.Barry Mc Bennett best midfielder in intermediate good athlete and can score,Jack Branigan good ball carrier and very quick,Barry Kerr what happened to him,Mulligan is needed now with Jack out for probably 2 months and most likely won't play in the league again.

The development squads are doing a lot of harm for juveniles in Monaghan. At 14 players are being told who's a good footballer and who isn't, and a lot of young lads that don't make it feel like thats that. And then for the lads at 16 who get dropped from the panels their worlds come crashing down and they see no future for themselves or a way back. It's the same in every county and it's chasing a lot of lads away from the game at a very early age. Jjoniel79 (Monaghan) - Posts: 199 - 03/02/2023 17:15:25 2456209 Link 0 |

He got many chances, didn't he come on v Tyrone in croker in 2018 and was anonymous, he came on early v Derry in Armagh last year when we needed scores and gave away 2 frees i think. Im sure Michael Mc Kernan, Hampsey and McNamee wouldn't be quaking in their boots with Garland inside. /I would say that manangement are right to move on and give another man a chance like Jones, Irwin etc monaghanmad (Monaghan) - Posts: 409 - 04/02/2023 09:38:14 2456278 Link 0 |
What nonsense. Young lads want to play games, lots of games.

"You are so right". No Ulster Minor titles in 65 years and then 3 in 8 years off the back of the great work done with the developmental squads.

Well said. It's what's happening in clubs after minors is the problem. Blueblood4life (Monaghan) - Posts: 200 - 04/02/2023 12:20:02 2456322 Link 1 |
No matter how light we are at the minute, vinnie probably needs a win to settle the county and this team because the longer it goes on, pressure does build. Hard to see a result tomorrow but you never know, will be a great test after kerry hammering monaghan last year. Regarding DG, yes his size and physical presence has hindered him but I think he is worth a place on the panel 222 (UK) - Posts: 844 - 04/02/2023 13:17:09 2456347 Link 0 |
Ye came on here and there but not given a genuine chance i mean the chances that Mcarthy and carey get year in year out and are anonymous in a lot of matches a genuine chance is given a fella the start for 2 to 4 matches to gain confidence in management a genuine feeling that there needed top scorer in senior last year

Any word of the team fo tomorrow ?? Fit15 (Monaghan) - Posts: 19 - 04/02/2023 19:10:51 2456426 Link 0 |
Garland got the start a few yrs back v dublin and mayo in the league and don't think he ever got given a proper go in championship. Doesn't seem to be cut out to play inter county for a side like monaghan who need all 15 players to be aggressive and physical as possible with opposition manic intensity win your own ball. Thomas Freeman wasn't the biggest size wise but never backed down on the field and had heart of lion in the monaghan Jersey. Not just garland who is v talented others who actually get played plenty in the side are similarly too passive for the team. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1880 - 04/02/2023 19:12:06 2456428 Link 0 |
He started v mayo a few years ago got 2points before halftime and was taken off very dangerous players when he cuts inside just feel he should have got a proper go at it is irwin mcarthy carey o hanlon slevin physical ? prideof85 (Monaghan) - Posts: 851 - 04/02/2023 19:55:18 2456441 Link 0 |
