Totally agree ,best for both clubs to do . I do agree its strange Foley didnt stay with them, certainly will be huge loss. But tumbilty is more than experienced to take up as replacement. Fergal Wilson is super appointment too. Best appointment so far , martin to miltown, that could be winning of championship for them Marooned2019 (Offaly) - Posts: 10 - 26/11/2025 15:22:16 2646146 Link 0 |

Martin had a team more than capable with MTP & couldn't get them over the line. What make you think he'll do it with Milltown. Shandonagh & Malachys will start off as favorites for next year. Left Full (Westmeath) - Posts: 271 - 26/11/2025 15:56:03 2646149 Link 0 |

Were Miltownpass good enough though? This year I don't think so, maybe in 2023 but they lost to a last minute free from what I recall. They came up way short in the semi final this year. Any word on players missing next year? Two or three lads travelling can change any teams prospects. You'd feel last year was the one for Milltown, they had Garrycastle more than on the ropes the first day. Senior B will be interesting next year, the likes of Tubberclair facing Tyrrellspass when there would have been a massive gulf up to recently between those types of teams. Four local teams along with Killucan and Tyrrellspass will make for good games.

There are some Clubs that are awash with money but most don't have a penny to throw. Every club has to pay a €1,000 levy to fund county coaching for instance while keeping their own ship afloat. What other levies are they paying? You won't see the Clubs sitting on their hands like the powers that be. The Clubs will have to fork out the money for the proposed Centre of Excellence for decades to come. These are even tougher times for Westmeath Clubs, better to go in house and save.

Ye totally agree . Really looking forward to see how tubberclaire handle themselves at senior . Also interested to see twaddle at athlone . I think the fact they have someone new in after coulle years with jordan will freshen things up. Any word on caulry ? Marooned2019 (Offaly) - Posts: 10 - 26/11/2025 20:42:20 2646173 Link 0 |

I know hindsight is a great thing but in my opinion MTP were never winning the Intermediate. It was only ever going to be between the other 3 teams in the Semi's as to who would win it and I do think the 2 teams in the Final were another step above the rest. Milltown will hopefully be boosted in 2026 by the return of Dillon who will bring them on again. You'd have to think Shandonagh's younger players will come on from the experience of playing in the final this year and will kick on also.

My point wasn't just at developing Athlone and Garrycastle. Tubberclair are one club who are doing ok at the minute but they were playing junior football only 5 years ago. Look around the rest of the area. There are a lot of clubs that would benefit from more South Westmeath representation on the top table to help drive games in the area. Castledaly, Maryland, Ballymore, Rosemount, all traditional football clubs struggling in and around the bottom half of intermediate. Tang doing well to survive in senior given the relatively low pick they have. Caulry doing ok similar to Tubberclair due to proximity to Athlone and the three town teams of Athlone, Garrycastle and Moate nowhere near top end of senior compared to town teams from other end of the county. The county board needs more south Westmeath people. The Games Development Manager isn't even on the County Board Executive. It's a paid position and has no real skin in the game other than getting paid a wage.

Manager's expenses? Two local men not going to charge what others charge?

How were they capable of winning championship when same players got relegated to section B previous year?

What has county board representatives got to do with clubs working hard to promote games in their area? Garrycastle rose to prominence when county board was under chair of Seamus Whelan and Paddy Collins. Rural clubs like Rosemount different issue but Moate, Athlone and Garrycastle could be doing more, Kilbeggan an utter waste at most levels Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2478 - 27/11/2025 13:08:06 2646220 Link 0 |

It's very hard to know really but population must be an issue; Maryland and Tang for example have low numbers from 19-16 roughly and coaching isn't gonna change that, the children quite simply aren't there. Tubberclair probably benefit from having the village and golf club that many people moved into the parish in the last 20 years as it was seen as an attractive place to live. Athlone with their population should be doing better but there are a lot of other sports in the town as there is in Mullingar. Rosemount, Castledaly, Ballymore and Milltown aren't going to experience an influx of people to their parishes all of a sudden. I really doubt the coaching is much different at underage level in most clubs but it's all down to numbers.

South Westmeath does need a good looking at in general not just Athlone area. Start off with our numbers at each club underage and then step it forward by looking at numbers coming out of the big amalgamations. Which clubs are benefitting and which ones losing out. Some amalgamations are just about getting a team on the field and some have more than one team at different ages, then compare to some very small clubs trying to field a team on their own and its very hard to apply the same rules across all Darragh (Westmeath) - Posts: 355 - 27/11/2025 13:42:54 2646229 Link 0 |

Hitting the nail on the head. Town teams that have low numbers need to knock on doors
