Some good players there, would be interesting to see an all Westmeath final, although Athy will have plenty to say I'm sure. Marist v Moate an interesting tie, Marist look the more talented team on paper but there's obviously more to it on the day.

as a kid in the 90s, i dont really remember a time when westmeath as a county team were very poor. i was 17 in 2001 as a meath fan, but i was always so impressed how westmeath turned themselves from what i used to hear them called a minnow in early 90s to a proper good footballing county they are now. they seemed to get their act together around mid 90s getting to league semi final, winning minor and u21 and have never looked back. as westmeath football fans, how do you think it was achieved? is thier a lesson for likes of wicklow or louth to do similar? did somethiing major happen in late 80s as the mid 90s team was coming through? like from what i heard and the record westmeath were equivilant of wicklow or carlow or fermanagh... its some achievement i always think but never seems to get any credit, plus westmeath never talk themselves up half enough dickie10 (UK) - Posts: 791 - 18/12/2024 21:56:52 2584047 Link 0 |
Col Mhuire have a good mix of 3-4 Loman's Players, 3-4 Shamrocks, 2 Shandonagh, 2-3 The Downs, 1 Multy, Higgins from Paul's, they're training at 7 in the morning since Sept, 2 sessions in the morning plus other after school, Oisin O Hara from Loman's was outstanding in under 20 final at midfield last Saturday, he's wing forward tomorrow, can see them beating Colaiste Eoin by 9-10 points. Of the 20 used in the last round the breakdown was 8 Shamrocks, 4 Lomans, 3 The Downs, 3 Shandonagh, 1 Multy, and 1 Ballinabrackey. Don't have it exact for Marist , but I think there were 7/8 Tubberclair playing against Pats. McHugh from Garrycastle and Lough from Athlone were good for county minors this year. Moate team is about 2/3 Westmeath, with most from Moate or Caulry. jamsie (Westmeath) - Posts: 466 - 19/12/2024 09:31:47 2584075 Link 1 |
Facile win for Colaiste Mhuire, won by 10 points, could easily have been 20, big surprise in Moate vs Marist game with Moate winning easily, some unsavoury scenes afterwards that will result in action against both schools. Moate now face Colaiste Mhuire Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1967 - 19/12/2024 16:15:53 2584113 Link 0 |
Apologies but Moate face Athy, Col Mhuire play Tullamore or Maynooth Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1967 - 19/12/2024 18:19:10 2584128 Link 0 |
Surprise win for Moate. Its going to take a seriously good team to stop Colaiste Mhuire from winning a Leinster title A_Chairde (Westmeath) - Posts: 259 - 19/12/2024 19:46:47 2584143 Link 0 |
Interesting, could be an all Westmeath final or indeed an all Kildare affair.

Moate prob facing tougher test, Athy regarded as a decent side but Col Mhuire's strength in depth is very impressive, extremely capable players barely getting a jersey on match days. Their hurling side is also formidable but there's very few players on both sides, Weir. McNamee, Daly only regulars. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1967 - 19/12/2024 23:08:06 2584157 Link 0 |

Happy New year to all the westmeath gaels, Am looking forward to 2025, Word over Xmas that Jason daly injured and an outfield player trying out in goal for senior team, that will be interesting. Hopefully similar to donegal and murphy, we will see Heslin returning to the maroon and white and staying closer to goal where he is most dangerous. Wasn't it every defenders dream to see heslin, Clifford, mcmanus, walsh etc chasing back and setting up as part of a defensive system. Alot of changes at once in the gaa but something had to be done to make game more attractive. Hopefully we give the management team and new players a chance, div 2 will be hard but we are there on merit and I think its where westmeath should be competing Upforthegame23 (Westmeath) - Posts: 117 - 03/01/2025 06:58:49 2584400 Link 0 |
doesn't look like heslin will be back this year from people in lomans. Also possibility of O Toole travelling will leave westmeath shook but gonoud due for another year been great servent.

Any word on friendlies played ? Or upcoming friendlies? Staying up in division 2 would be the priority this year you'd imagine. Lakecounty94 (Westmeath) - Posts: 69 - 03/01/2025 09:26:10 2584415 Link 0 |
Div 2 will be very competitive but we have good winable home fixtures.Maguire,Lynch,Dolan missing will be a huge loss.Doubts about Heslin and O'Toole as well and also Shane Allen -a great young player could be gone.Tough season ahead but time to get behind the new management set up and players.-2 away friendlies played against Sligo and Donegal recently and wont be long before first league game at home to Louth. The talk after the county final was Heslin had nearly made up his mind, maybe that's changed since but unlikely. O'Toole is definitely travelling, the talk is he'll go for 6 months and return in the latter stages of the club championship. Not sure who will captain the side either.

Yes heard Shane Allen not going back in he is to focus on club football. Also heard Eoin Mulvihill and Jonny Lynam not around due to travel. Heslin still hasn't made up his mind but it doesn't look good with all the missing bodies. No final decision on Ronan Wallace or O Toole but I have heard that they are considering going travelling. Doubt anyone could name the starting 15 right now for The 1st round of championship. Also heard an outfield player has been tried in goals in some in-house games and challenge games. We will be odds on to be relegated from division 2 Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 521 - 03/01/2025 13:37:02 2584446 Link 0 |
It's good to be trying an outfield player in the nets, the goalkeeper can act as the extra man in attack. Every team will be doing this I bet.
