Replying To JoxerDaly: "Very disappointed in the speech from the St Loman's captain John Heslin, demonstrating a lack of class, a lack of respect and a lack of humility, pandering to his own crowd, while disrespecting the County Board Chairman and The Downs.
St Lomans were lucky to draw all 3 games (extra time is a new game), and then lucky to win a penalty shootout which is essentially a lottery. I think a further replay and extra time would be a better solution considering the game v Dunshaughlin is not for 2 weeks, although there is a full set of hurling games next weekend plus the IFC replay. For me, penalties is a soccer solution to a GAA problem. Need a better solution.
The Downs played the better brand of attacking football, defensive when they needed to be, but always looking to attack. Watching St Lomans and Kinnegad where they bring 15 players behind the ball is an awful spectacle, puke football as Pat Spillane would say. Bring on the new rules.
Luke Loughlin was Man Of The Match in both finals, and player of the SFC Championship. Definitely deserved to win his second SFC medal, but not to be on the day.
St Lomans v Dunshaughlin is on 3rd November in Pairc Tailteann. Hope this is a good game, and that St Lomans for all their bluster of 10 finals in a row, can show they are not just a big fish in a small pond but can go on to win the Leinster Club Championship. I expect they will fall short again. The Downs are better set up to progress in Leinster, more variation in their play and a better attacking team." It's genuinely hard to decide which bit of this is the most non sensical. I'll go with the speech. How did he disrespect the downs? Talked at length about what a great team they were

I don't think I've been at a game that went ahead with the weather as bad but it was worth playing and I'm glad it went did, gave a different element of entertainment and it wasn't a bad game. I was very surprised at how well set up Milltown were considering, I thought they'd try to do much but they stuck to their game plan extremely well. I had Garrycastle winning this at a canter but weather aside Milltown were the better team. The free at the end is Garrycastles way back in though. I'll be at the replay because it needed another day out. To lose on a day like that just wasn't going to be a fair result." The intermediate final was good entertainment considering the dreadful conditions. Both teams will be happy to get another shot at it. I feel theres more in Garrycastle from what I seen of them in the semi final. Milltown have some very talented players and will only improve from that game. CFCW deserved their win in the junior and if they can keep the players together they could win the intermediate next year. Theyre putting in alot of spade work at underage with over 130 players from nursery level to u12s. They have a sizeable area to pick from.

I dont like to see penalties deciding a county final. Its tough on the players and very demanding after playing normal time and extra time. Credit to both teams and best of luck to Lomans in Leinster. They have been the best in the county over last 10 years whether you like it or not.

Maybe the best thing to do is keep replaying the game until The Downs win ???? Your comment "Penalties are a lottery" .I think its even simpler than that , You either score them or you don't and if you don't you don't win .

Extra time of the Athlone game, second half against Kinnegad and both games against St Loman's Lukey stood out. Is this enough for him to win the imaginary player of the Championship award?

I think you missed the point completely. The game should be decided on the field during play, and if that requires a replay and extra time then that's what should happen. Penalties are decided by which team is luckier, did you shoot the right side, did the goalkeeper go the wrong way, etc. But it is also decided by a small group of individuals and not the entire team. Gaelic football is a team game.
For me The Downs were the better team over the 2 finals and will regret not closing out either of the finals. They were not beaten on the field of play. St Lomans won the penalty shootout, that makes them Westmeath SFC Champions but second best team in the championship. I imagine Heslin's speech will be the motivation they need to come back and knock Lomans off their perch.
I hope that the IFC Replay next weekend between Garrycastle and Milltown is a good game and decided on the field of play, not penalties.

CFCW to win an Intermediate championship next year? 130 players under 12 wont be eligible for over 6-7 years, They had a great team 12 years ago when they won the intermediate but were knocking on the door that time for 3 or 4 seasons. The last 10 years they havent done anything whatsoever in Intermediate. The last teams to win Junior and then go up and win intermediate were Moate winners in 2020 and won the Junior in 2014? then Caulry winners in 2014 and won the junior in 2009? it definitely takes a lot of time to make it happen.
When was the last time an intermediate team went up and won a senior i think it was Garrycastle in 1997 won it in 01? its unheard of over the last 30-40 years before that Castledaly, both had a serious crop of players coming in a wave.

The best part of your rambling, anti Loman's message was where you hoped they would go on and win Leinster!!! No one on this forum believes you meant that and in your next post label Loman's the second best team in Westmeath!!!! If Loman's win Leinster will The Downs be Leinster's best team???

I do not agree with penalties being used unless its a very last resort scenario. I think at the end of full time we should use something like who scored the most goals or who scored the most scores altogether during the match. Either of those 2 scenario's would have produced a different winner on Sunday but at least its a result as a team rather than as a few individuals taking penalties. Think the GAA should pick one and go with it and if that is tied also maybe go to penalties.

Every team knows that penalties are a likely scenario now in GAA and a big question I would have is; are teams taking penalties at training and practicing them accordingly? I'm sure every team has their takers picked well in advance and trust that they are the best ones to take them?
