Replying To Claretandblue:  "The scoreline was ultimately kind to us, we got two fortuitous goals, didn't get what breaks? Reality was what happened today, saying we're better than the scoreline suggests means nothing. Laois running Wexford close is just a sign that they were an excellent tier two side, they annihilated Offaly by 31 points, we need to face facts, no one is at fault, we have 15 clubs and eight of those are in four amalgamated teams, that's compared to Dublin with more hurlers in Ballynoden and Na Fianna combined."
That's the reality but it hasn't stopped us in the past having wins over the likes of KK and Wexford so let us continue to have hope.I agree with Dheen that next year's group are POTENTIALLY better but the team has to function.
The senior team survived against Down but looked clueless and illdisciplined for much of the game.
At least we have probably assured Joe Mcdonagh status for 2026.

Yeah it's not a case of dissecting what's wrong. The team did good. They beat Offaly which is never easy, won all their games. Looked fit, looked well drilled but to beat any of the big 4 teams you need luck, timing, everything to go your way and sometimes for them to be off their game. The tier one sides do have the advantage of playing 3 really good fast paced games whereas
Westmeath only had one decent game against Offaly. Laois would have the same issue. That's the same for any tier two side trying to break through each year.

100% agree.Westmeath and Laois faced a huge disadvantage playing tier 1 teams accustomed to a much quicker game.Dublin could lose all their matches and still make a quarter final while we had to win 5 matches just getting there with several dual players playing football midweek as well.Leinster need to look at the structure and Westmeath,Laois,Carlow and Kildare need to work together to ensure a better system applies in 2026.

Decent looking team posted for the Carlow match.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they won both of their next two games, albeit it's looking like closing the barn door after the horse is gone…
If fully fit, that's a potent forward six.
Best of luck to the team.

First half display was atrocious, one of our worst ever, Carlow scored 4-12 in 25 mins, Carlow goal after half time put us nearly 20 points behind, great fightback led by Niall O' Brien, Kevin Regan, Killian Doyle but conceding seven goals is not acceptable

I believe if Kildare beat down on the last day then Westmeath are safe regardless on the H2H with down?
I'd down win, then Westmeath need a win against kerry

Surely Cunningham was leading that fight along with O Brien ? 1-4 from play and 3 from Niall . Two of those have been leading the fight all year. Niall is very vocal and backs it up. Shocking first half. Can't believe how poor we were in the first half. Great effort to fight back but too late .

Longford had 3 Pollard men playing for them today, one of them a former Westmeath county player, suppose u can't blame any lad for wanting to play county, in any competition.

How are we feeling about the trip to Kerry, Kildare will surely beat Down in Newbridge, helping out cause massively. But hopefully our lads want to go out on a ""high"" after a poor year.

Probably anyway kerry poor today so far but vest performance from westmeath if they played like you wonder they could have been at the other end of the table.

Players put in the performance to keep Westmeath in the Joe Mcdonagh for next year.

Also not exactly what I said but the post was altered which is annoying. Another poster said it anyway, expected change in the summer. Thankfully keep our Joe Mcdonagh status after a disappointing year.

Change demanded in the summer full stop. The board got it completely wrong. Now they have 3 months to get it right for 2026 when Antrim probably will replace the Joe Mac winner.
