It was on the scoreboard at the end of the game. Cavan won.

Just on Kerry first of all, it wouldn't have happened with a Kerry club, as their Junior championship winners would be up in Intermediate the following year. It's a bit of an unusual situation for Kilmurry in Cork. In 2022 they won the Cork Junior A championship. That was the competition which qualified them for Munster at the time. However, in 2023 Cork football championships were restructured. The Premier Junior championship was created, which took the top 8 Junior A teams and bottom 4 Intermediate teams. So Kilmurry ended up there in 2023, instead of going to Intermediate. In 2023 they actually lost the Premier Junior final to Finbarr's and didn't get promoted. But as Finbarr's weren't a first team for the club (they have a senior team), they weren't allowed to represent Cork in Munster. So Kilmurry did, as they were beaten finalists. In 2024 Kilmurry went a step better and won the Premier Junior. So now they're representing Cork again. It's a bit of a quirk, but they'll finally be gone off to Intermediate this year. I actually heard something similar before the 2020 Ulster final, what I heard was that they were training for Dublin and some players were even left out of the Ulster final squad with that potential next match in mind. It was a mistake, Cavan were the better team on the day and deserved to be Ulster Champions, I felt Cavan were a talented squad who had seriously underachieved for years following major underage success in Ulster. Yes it was just the way it worked out for them due to the restructuring and the Barr's winning the county that they have been in the last 3 Munster Junior finals. I wouldn't say that it's unfair in the scheme of things as the poster previous said. Kilmurry are in effect the 49th ranked club team in Cork club football. Premier Senior -12 teams + seperate Divisions/Colleges section. Senior A - 12 teams Premier Intermediate - 12 teams Intermediate A - 12 teams Premier Junior (which Kilmurry won) 12 teams. Muff would be ranked 29th in Donegal if I'm correct in saying there's 16 senior clubs and 12 intermediate clubs? So it's the 29th best team playing the 49th best team. Hardly unfair!! Who was left out of Ulster final squad. First I heard of it. Stories don't be long growing legs. Important year coming up it's about time we stopped making excuses, Cavan beat us fair and square on the day. Likewise Galway last year..

That's the difference in mgt - not a chance Jimmy the messiah would have let that happened or took an ulster championship for granted.

No supporters were at the game. Not even you - it was in the middle of the 2nd Covid lock down.

Played Louth on Sunday, don't know about Mogan, but they had no Murphy or Sean Patton.

In 2020 before the Ulster final I heard that Oisin Gallen was left out, because they were keeping him for the Dublin game. But I believe it was the heavy training sessions before the Ulster final, which had an eye on Dublin, that really broke us. We looked leggy and tired in that Ulster final, its pity, because we should have had our first 3 in a row. Galway beat us, but I think we showed that we are a match for them, and even with our poor shooting in the last 10-15 minutes, we still would have beaten them if it hadn't been for their fluke goal. But we need to step it up a level this year, and that won't be easy. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1217 - 09/01/2025 17:21:52 2585221 Link 1 |

You're wrong about gallen. From a good source he was injured.. a lot of rubbish was spouted after that game. All it takes is one person to say it and it doesn't be long spreading. I would gave Cavan and Galway credit for winning not making excuses as to why we lost. The best team win on both days. In my eyes winning Sam has to be the objective this year. There's about 6 teams that can win it. Armagh. Tyrone. Donegal. Dublin. Kerry Galway and these teams are well off the standard Dublin mayo and Kerry set a few years ago.. so Sam has to be the goal anything less will be a dissapointment.

Jeez leave him alone now - he's taken enough heavy blows.

I disagree with you, €100k for a trip to Dubai for 40-50 people isn't much really, not when compared to booking 4-7 days at Carton House or similar in Ireland including meals for 40-50 people. It resent how Donegal are always put under the spotlight for merely trying to match other Counties in terms of preparation etc, we have Jim McGuinness back for 3 seasons only, after next season he will be gone and unlikely to return in future. I don't care if they spend €500k, because finding managers of Jim's quality is near impossible and we may as well enjoy this rollercoaster for the next 2 seasons and put our best foot forward, as after that things could drop off again and we could be faced with another bumpy 10-20 years. I'm all for optimism and think that with a fair wind we can definitely be up there in contention with the other heavy hitters. But statements like, "nothing less than Sam will suffice" are a bit grandiose. We've won two All Irelands in our history. Yes, we have a great manager and a strong panel, but there is a long road to travel. If you look at the games in the final stages last year there was little between Donegal, Armagh and Galway. You could argue even that Kerry should have beaten Armagh. They were well in control but inexplicably let the game run away from them. My point is that when teams are very evenly matched it can all come down to what happens on the day. A player mistake, a lucky bounce, maybe a terrible refereeing decision to tip the scales. I agree with you that last year was a golden opportunity to land a third All Ireland. The hurt of that will hopefully spur the lads on to the Holy Grail in 2025, but it certainly isn't a given. Yea fair points lockjaw but I'm dam sure mc Guinness is drumming nothing less than sam into the players. Maybe that's why we have win only two this inferior complex. You just have to through the 6 teams that I mentioned there's nothing there that stands out unlike a few years ago when Kerry Dublin and mayo were dominating. You definitely need luck with injuries suspension and bad refereeing calls but this is the year. Believe lad we're all nervous but I think Sam will be in hills this summer. But we definitely can't afford Murphy been out long stretches with injuries. Tyrone are going to be dangerous they have done well at under age level this last few years .. can't wait till Kerry game but as long as we stay up I'll be happy we all know what happened Derry last year..

Absolutely agree with this. Even Dublin only lost to Galway by a point. Dublin were 3 points up as well and the referee stopped the match for a head injury. But he restated it with a free to Galway on the 21 and that brought them back into it. Fitzsimons had a great tackle, referee never gave anything but stopped play a few seconds later. Was a mystery. My point is, there's so little between these top 8 teams. Add Tyrone in this year. Maybe Derry.
