You can't compare that Dublin team with Galway. Dublin could afford someone not doing as much from play or not being as much of an athlete if they brought high percentage free taking. Galway need everyone playing above themselves to compete with the top teams. JimB1991 (Donegal) - Posts: 165 - 06/05/2026 08:25:57 2671227 Link 1 |

exactly, and Galway is the only good team with no free taker or 45 expert. It's a huge problem, not to mention the other issues with keepers and kick outs. Look, Roscommon will give us a huge awakening and it will only be an exhibition game.

The point is every team should have at a minimum a reliable freetaker and we actually have one in the county who goes well beyond that. It's even more important now in the era of the two pointer. Whether it's Carlow, Galway or Dublin is irrelevant. Every team with a freetaker who can comfortably knock over two pointers has an advantage. It's even more important based on your point, that we're not leaving scores behind, given how many tight games we're in. Another example is Steven Sherlock being brought back by Cork and John Cleary himself saying that that new rules have made a place for him. He was dropped years ago for not being able to do the running the game demanded. With the new rules, he's now afforded a bit more leeway in that regard and he's now crucial to Cork's chances. The other thing is Barry McHugh is a very skilful footballer, and far from just a freetaker. He's physically strong, and while he might not be the most mobile, he's a very intelligent footballer. It's possible he doesn't want to be part of the setup, and if that's the case it's absolutely fine. However, if he's available I'd be giving him a chance to see how he goes.
