Speed over 10 yards was absolutely part of Corkery's game. He had a great burst over a short distance. For such a big man, he was always able to get out in front and make space for his shot. It didn't really diminish too much as he got older either. For scoring forwards, that's more than enough. The ability to burn players over 20+ yards isn't necessary for Shane anymore. That's not to say he still can't motor. Shane is very two-footed and has a good kicking range when he's fully fit. That alone makes him very difficult to mark, and should enable him to be used to finish moves more often. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2581 - 08/10/2025 12:02:43 2638927 Link 1 |
i assume you meant dessie is the best 2 point scorer in the club championship this year maybe and not that he's better than shane walsh robert finnerty paul conroy or peter cooke who kick them at county level where the standards are much higher

In my opinion Barry McHugh has been the best freetaker in the county for a good number of years. He'd kick the same frees at intercounty that he does at club level. You could argue that Dessie might not be able to make space as well or win possession often enough to kick two-pointers at intercounty, but I think he definitely deserves a shot. He's a very consistent kicker of the ball. While Peter Cooke can kick some outrageous long range scores, he wouldn't be as consistent as Dessie. Dessie also has a great eye for goal. I'd love to see some stats on goals scored per player in the county championship over the past decade. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2581 - 08/10/2025 23:29:48 2639009 Link 0 |
Pity they couldn't kick them at club level then.

agree on mchugh but the argument would be does he offer enough outside of frees at county level. dessie a very good player but has also been involved with galway in the past. candlewax (Galway) - Posts: 301 - 09/10/2025 09:16:54 2639023 Link 0 |
I think Dessie deserves another chance under the new rules but he didn't exactly shoot the lights out under the old rules at intercounty level. The extra space should suit him though in theory. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2426 - 09/10/2025 13:30:09 2639073 Link 0 |

Dessie got a bit of a run during Covid, but how many championship games did he actually play? I also think he's a better player now. He has stood out year on year in the senior championship, and has often been marked by intercounty defenders. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2581 - 09/10/2025 19:54:27 2639142 Link 2 |
Ya I would like to see Dessie given a run best forward in county at club for 5 plus years and has improved and new rules help. When I say a run i mean more than 20 mins in a league game in Jan would love if he got 2-3 starts. Eire89 (Galway) - Posts: 421 - 10/10/2025 09:06:09 2639173 Link 0 |
Lsiten tpo the maroon & white pod last night. Barry Cullinane made reference to Kieran Donaghy helping Salthill out is that true? I do hope we are in for 2 good games and I firmly believe its time for Salthill to deliver and anything less than a co title is yet another failur for them. I do fancy corofin here but I am hopefull Salthill give a much better game and dispaly than lasy years limp semi final defeat. I think moycullen with Currid helping out & the tribute to Don looked prime. Also Cooke will be back. Eire89 (Galway) - Posts: 421 - 10/10/2025 09:08:51 2639175 Link 0 |
