Replying To Cbar:  "I've heard the views of a lot of people on this AI - the over whelming majority of which is that Galway lost it, kicked it away by not converting 7/8 kickable points that went wide or dropped into the keepers hands.

Everyone to their own opinion. Personally I can't get away from that statistic. Armaghs supposedly stronger panel didn't cause the Galway forwards to kick the ball wide from frees / marks and it definitely didn't stop Joyce from instructing someone else other than Walsh to take the frees.

A very difficult loss for Galway to take, difficult to recover from especially if management are blamed for the defeat."
Galway definetely lost it, I think thats clear from the scoreline at the end of the game, everyone can safely say Galway lost.
Armagh also kicked wides in the 1st half and wouldn't be happy with there performance around the middle third.

I just did the maths on the scoreline. It equates to a one point margin of victory for Armagh. We can indeed safely we lost the game. It is absolutely clear from the scoreline.
Galway kicked more wides than Armagh and also dropped more short. Galway had more scoring chances than Armagh. This is also safe to conclude from looking at the match statistics.
Galway did indeed largely dominate around the middle. It gave them to platform to create more chances. As a result, they will feel of course feel as though they left it behind them.
What did you make of the first round of the Donegal championship last weekend? I keep a good eye on that forum. I haven't seen you comment there much, if at all.

Talk of Barry McHugh not missing them frees in the final is missing the main point. He wouldn't have been on the pitch at all if he was in the panel. The problem was management fatefully believed that injured marquee players would be good. Walsh was brilliant all summer considering he was hampered. But it bit us in the end.

Feels like we are all repeating ourselves. 'Donegal man or woman' wants to relentlessly convince us that we are just an average side and that Ulster football is the greatest thing ever. Every second message is from that source. It is starting to feel like propaganda. In recent times Galway have beaten Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Monaghan and even Armagh...I am just not convinced enough to pay homage despite the incessant, relentless barrage of messages. Both teams were poor in the closing stages. Both teams did their best to lose it. Galway had more opportunities to tie up or win the game in the final ten minutes despite not using their bench and fielding unfit or injured players for most of the match. Both teams can look forward to next season with optimism. We need a panel and we need to trust that panel. We also need pace. Could Conroy be a presence at 14 like Donaghy of old?

Agree with your post. As regards Conroy, we definitely need a second like for like option for Comer if he is not fit. I'd have Conroy if he is willing before Tomo for that role as Tomo I'd see more as a corner forward. Tierney could be an option for there too. Conroy has actually given some good performances at full forward the past. Problem is no matter who we have in there the ball is not moving in fast enough, even though he was on half a leg to be fair to Comer he got very little ball in the final or earlier . Part of that was the double sweeper Armagh system but we have been slow moving the ball all year, we can still have the control they want and move the ball a bit faster. Even against Armagh a few opportunities went by the way side as at the crucial moment we either recycled the ball or held the pass that half second too long. We need to look at pace in the half forward line also, be great to have an option of genuine raw pace to add to what's there already

Replying To Pope_Benedict:  "Interesting point about SM going forward, but what about SM at the back on the day? Not the force we saw v Dublin at the quarter final certainly. Clearly targeted by Armagh on the day, and Oisín Conaty did come away with motm. Would leave one questioning the wisdom of dropping Daly so comprehensively from the final, while naming him as first substitute."
SM was brilliant against Dublin but he's not the long term answer at wing-back. Modern wing backs need to be able to score or threaten to score at least. Just to keep the defence honest. Armagh Let SM alone and doubled up on others. No fault of his. Attacking is not his game.

Very enjoyable Fr Manning Cup U16 final in Longford today. Leitrim who had beaten Kerry South in the semi final getting the better of Galway West 2-12 to 2-09. Leitrim managed by Cormac Haslam.
Galway Scorers
Barry Keating Oranmore Maree 2-03(0-01f)
Jeaic O'Cualain Carna Caiseal/Na Piarsaigh 0-04(0-03f)
Jack Barry Salthill Knocknacarra 0-01
Conal O'Conghaile An Ceathru Rua 0-01

Keating looks a good prospect, tall and 2 footed.
Other stand out was the captain at centre back P.J. Mac Donnacha Carna Caiseal Na Piarsaigh

Replying To Belclare7:  "Salthill even without Finnerty who had an op should beat Mountbellew
Naomh Anna to beat Caherlistrane
Monivea to shock James
Moycullen to bear Dunmore
Corofin will win easily
Claregalway to beat a Tuam team who are heavily defensive
Killanin to beat Milltown
Annaghdown if Comer plays to beat Barna"
Called a few right so far..
St James were terrible in the second half, fair play to Monivea...
Bunt still has it on the sideline... as for St James you would wonder where they are going...
The draw was as good as a loss for them..

From the bits of the games I saw today. Matthew Thompson could be in the senior squad as soon as next year. Looks a top player in the making. Probably Galway's best player at 20's this year.

Sam O'Neill is already in the senior squad but had an injury curtailed year. He's such a fantastic athlete though. You don't come across players with his combination of size, power and pace very often. Probably needs some coaching though to get the best out of him.

Did Cillian Mcdaid have surgery not bad for a lad this evening who went under knife.

Agree with thompson from what I've seen would put him ahead of oconghaile ocurrion already

Tomo was disappointing and this is a big championship for him.

O'Neill hopefully stays injury free and should get plenty of game time in league but really looks suited to firm ground.

It starting to clear the final from the system and look to 2025

Will Comer play any part for Annaghdown today

Sounded like business as usual on GBFM, and a late winning goal to boot. Not a word about injuries, hamstrings, unscrupulous fullbacks, or even the ubiquitous 'double marked'. No, back to business today it seems.

It most certainly wasn't business as usual in the intermediate championship with three of the favourites to win the championship beaten.

A young Caltra outfit accounted for MB by 7pts and should have won by more if they took their goal chances

After that game Gabriel s took down Spiddal in another surprise result in what was a complete borefest of a game.

But Oranmore a 3rd division team take the biscuit without doubt by beating 1st division Michael's by 3pts.

Hopefully a decent championship ahead to take our minds of the AI defeat.

The surgery talk seems to be rubbish after, it came out after final comer, walsh, finnerty and mcdaid were all going under the knife, dont know anything about walsh but finnerty seems to be the only lad who went for surgery

Moycullen managed to turn it around against Dunmore to win by a point but their first was so bad, they were lucky to score at all in the first half. Can't see them winning a championship unless they get more players back. They still lack shooters when the running game isn't working.

With 12 qualifying from 16 in the Senior and Intermediate championship, the real championships will begin at the ko phase, just like the Sam Maguire '24 competition. You might need to lose all 3 of your group games to fail to make the last 12.

The only thing I heard is that Walsh had a grade 3 hamstring tear so shouldn't have even been playing in the final.
On the club results, it's hard to see beyond Corofin. Salthill could really challenge them but we'll see

Went to tuam yesterday evening 2 poor games with mountbellew looking very poor no real game plan at all, salthill a little better but I don't think they would beat either corofin or moycullen, was at the tuam and Claregalway game tuam very defensive and got cought out in the end, Claregalway haven't improved much either from last year, but this game was an improvement on Saturdays games,
Dunmore were excellent in the first half really good football pity they didn't come out in the second half but to moycullens credit they stuck with it and forced dunmore into mistakes, I didn't see corofin but for me the 2 top runners moycullen and corofin,
