Replying To Pope_Benedict:  "1) Limerick beat KK
2) Wexford beat Limerick by a margin that betters KK scoring difference- Wex 20pts inferior to KK currently
3 Clare beat Tipp by a margin not exceeding Wexford's victory margin over Limerick by 2pts or more

1,2,3 and Wexford stay up."
That's the one Pope. Not really that likely......

Replying To Overdahill:  "You're raving a bit there now sir.

The follwoing places are nailed on imo-

1 fahy

2 Morgan
3 Daithi if fit, fintan if not
4 Morrissey
5 Mannion
6 Lee

8 Fahy
9 Monahan

11 Killeen
14 Whelan (probably rotating but nailed on to start there)
15 Burns

7 is the only place totally up for grabs imo and only becasue no one has laid any sort of claim on it. The remaining forward positions haev a few players in contention but will be 3 from the 2 Cooneys, Niland, Concannon, Fleming, and Mclaughlin. Management can't do much if none of them have really laid a strong claim consistently. Burns I'd imagine will be 15, Limerick seemed to be a bit of a step up that came as a shock to him but he's shown enough to persevere with.

So the center of the team is nailed down quite clearly.

It's 'Pivitoal' we win Lesineter every year. yet we often don't and here we are again. In all honestly this year more than any year since our first one in 2012 it won't a failure if we don't win leinster"
Well sir, I would take a fully fit full forward line of C Mannion C Cooney C Whelan all day long over burns, killeen, mclaughlin or the 2 cooneys.

When I said the 2 Cooneys I meant Conor or Kevin, we're both starting Whelan, and I overlooked Mannion because he's obviously a starter but I have no idea where. So we are in agreement really

I agree with you hence me saying IT MAY COST US. I mean it's catch 22. What's the best way to be competitive in 2-3 years? Hold on to the old lads? I strongly doubt it. Maybe I'm wrong but we can't hold on to 2017 much longer.

It's about ability and there is no doubt but C Mannion C Cooney C Whelan on song have plenty of that and are a serious full forward line.
J Flynn E Niland B Concannon in half forward line.
The young lads can be used as impact subs

Just out of curiosity what makes you think that full forward line would work??? The first thing management would do is tell Mannion to go roaming around the field and look for space. He needs space like all stylish players. Whatever chance Whelan has in a two man inside forward line Cooney has no chance. And please don't mention last Saturday night's league game. Championship hurling is a different beast...

I want the old fashioned 3 man inside full forward line, push out the half forward line and supply good ball inside...the type of ball that bounces off the ground into the hand of the out running full forward line. None of this horrible big high ball inside.
In my luxurious career I played both back and forward and as a defender I absolutely loved to see a big highball raining down while as a forward hated the horrible highball....you'd be screaming placed into the hand a few feet in front of me. The forwards ball into the hand once you have it in the hand your King!

100%.... Championship hurling is a serious increase in speed. As we have seen for the last few years the older players do ok in the league and fall away in championship.
We are struggling to work the ball out from the back especially when a team pushes up on us.
We may do well in Leinster but thats only because Leinster has never been as weak. Would any Leinster team qualify out of the Munster round robin?

You are in Cuckoo land if you think just because your half forward line pushes out towards midfield that the opposition half back line will follow.

Limerick do the opposite they put Hannon sitting in front of their full back line and Kyle Hayes turns his wing forward into defender having to chase him up the pitch.

Don't let the half back line follow and 3 unmarked half forwards out in midfield would easily drive the ball over the bar

I agree with you. An old fashioned 3 man inside forward line, no sweepers, no hand passing the ball to midfield and at least 70% of scores from the 50 yard line. It's what we dream of. I spoke with a man involved with an U13 team over the weekend. Coaching is all about retaining possession, hand pass after hand pass the skills of the game are dying.

Cuckoo land said Hannon sits in front of his full back line but sure let the centre forward sit in front of Hannon!!
Hurling is a simple game, someone said its got faster and its all about speed? The movement of the ball has got quicker because lads are pinging it around with short accuracy but you don't need to be super ultra speed merchant to compete!

Galway have had 7 years do this since 2017, to put the centre forward sit in front of Hannon!!

what has happened Mr Cuckoo?

I couldn't be anymore in disagreement with you and to those who say it's a "simple game" it's not! Take a look at games from the 60's forward to today. In fact, take a look at KK's AI run and the game now it's a totally different game. When was the last time you saw ground hurling? Look at the technology, ball and sticks are totally different, even the boots and studs used; players use a smaller stick possibly composite to have a larger sweet spot and are putting the lighter ball over from their own half. Add in the fitness levels, GPS tracking, nutrition, game strategy, statistics gathered even the jerseys are "wick" instead of the big cotton ones worn in the ice age. The game for better or worse is time in possession and score execution, the 4 "S's" needed are Strength, Speed, Skill and Strategy. The one "S' I left out was "seven footers", helpful in certain positions but don't need a team of them. Now before you say that was always needed, the players from the 80's shooting looked like they were teeing up a golf shot compared to today's athletes.

Galway had a one in a generation team between 2012 and 2018 that should have won more AIs. They were unfortunate to come up against KK towards the end of their reign and Limerick at the start of theirs. In the end we were a Joe Canning "wonder point" away from winning nothing. It's unfortunate but I would rate that generation as one of the best we have had. I would say management made some terrible decisions got the matchups wrong, made Walter Walsh a hero in KK, played an injured James Skehill and not starting Harte in one AI. I would say our mental game was not up to scratch either. The one thing we done right (after a player rebellion) was bring in MOD, who gained experience in Tipp and won an AI club, Thats why I think if we can gut and rebuild the academy, we may be able to give him the raw material he needs.

I think that is somewhat hyperbolic. A "once in a generation team between 2012 and 2018? Apart from the fact that there were some personnel changes during that period, in my opinion we also had some pretty ordinary players as regulars on the team thoughout most of the period also.

In reality Galway have not had a really top class consistent team at the top of there game since 1985 to 1990 that was great period for Galway hurling and yes they definitely should have won 2 more finals but that bunch of players woukd hold there own in any era in my opinion,, at the moment well actually in last number of years Galway at best a top 5-8 side and I can't see much change coming ,, 5 all Ireland's in senior level in there history that is reality

Correct PS. That is a much more accurate assessment. Galway 2012 and Galway 2016-2018 weren't remotely similar sides in personal terms. They weren't even one team, let alone a once in a generation team. Cunningham is generally credited with building two sides in his 4 year tenure, the 2012 side and the 2015-2016 side. Good achievement by AC imo.

That is not reality.

In REALITY the Galway 2017-2018 side was a top class consistent team, who hadn't lost a championship game in 2 years, when Limerick turned them over at the '18 final.

IN REALITY what was 'really top class consistent' about the 1985 to 1990 side, that only had to win one competitive match to qualify for an allireland final, and actually lost more finals than they won 1985-1990.

That team went to replays with KK in two AI's and where a last minute puck behind a Tipp team that hammered KK in a final and the best player in the land with Joe Canning is not a pedestrian team. They were as good as any of them in that period but mentally and strategically couldn't get over the line. That to me says more about the management than the players, MOD came in and got to 2 AIs , won one and was a whisker away from beating Limerick in the other. The team has been around since 2012 and needed a bit of refreshment but IMHO Limerick came along and changed the game dynamic so doubtful we could have caught them anyway. Limerick are now in the same phase Galway were, older players, lot of mileage and the pace and game has caught up to them. Any of 4 teams can win the AI this year and they are all in Munster.
