Replying To beano:  "If ever there was a combination primed for full-time amalgamation it's those two. They really seem to have their houses in order though in terms of equality between both clubs.

I always thought Kilanerin/Tara Rocks went under the banner of Ballynastragh Gaels up to under-20 as well. They certainly did a few years ago anyway. Have Kilanerin subsumed the name entirely now?"
No. Ballynastragh Gaels are what they are called at underage still.

Under 20 is not an underage competition so they will go by Kilanerin in football and Tara Rocks in hurling the same as they do in other adult competitions.

e.g. Wexford Gaels instead of Vols/St. Joseph's, Hollow Rovers instead of Duffry Rovers/Marshalstown, Moguegeen Gaels instead of Fethard/Clongeen, etc.?"
OLI and St Fintans are almost 1 club at underage I think, I never remember either fielding there own team going back 20 years. Where someone like Fethard have fielded there own team in certain years.

I think the idea if amalgamation was thrown out there about 5 years ago but didn't have much support, in fariness I think they both have small picks and them together wouldn't even be considered a club with a big pick.

Yeah, I realise that - just as neither Kilanerin nor Tara Rocks have fielded at underage level in their own right for a good few years now, and go as Ballynastragh Gaels instead.

My question though is simply why OLI/St Fintan's are allowed operate under that name, instead of something like Fintan's Island, when every other amalgamation has to come up with a hybrid name.

Don't think it can be a case of small clubs wanting to keep their own identity, because when Clonee (for example) went in at underage level with Ferns in recent years, they were called Sliabh Bui Gaels instead of just Ferns/Clonee.

Ah well, this is just the sort of quare yoke I wonder about sometimes....

Hailing from those neck of the woods myself, I'm not 100% sure but St.Fintans/OLI have been amalgamated at underage for approx 40/50 years I think - don't quote me exactly on that but its a long-standing agreement, whereas most amalgamations mentioned above are relatively new amalgamations. I know when we joined with Rosslare at u21 a few years ago St.F/OLI/Rosslare was called Forth & Bargy Gaels, so its probably just the longevity of the amalgamation is why.

Maybe so. Could be the case that whatever rule governs these things says that any new amalgamations must have a hybrid name, but any that were already in place when the rule was introduced could keep the same name. I've never been able to find that rule whenever I've looked though, so just thought I'd ask here.

Ah well, nothing to lose sleep over anyway. Like I said, just one of those quare yokes I wonder about sometimes....

Our under 9s played Fethards under 9s at hurling a few months back. They had a full team and subs.

Hope so. We have the numbers playing underage football in the county compared to many other counties. Granted some of the better players opt to play hurling when adults but at minor we should be competitive at least.

Our combined schools seem to be doing well too, they are in the competition proper now from what I can gather.

With the new "draw" type entry system into secondary schools the combined schools team should get relatively better compared to Peter's and GC year on year.

Playing better counties can only be good for our young lads!

Don't know any of the set-up apart from Flood, who has had various success with his club, at underage and ladies football, and is also involved with the UCD Sigerson. The only carry forward from last year's set up too.

Some other poster mentioned that the combined schools could get better than Peter's and Counsel year on year the more it grows, and I think it'll be fantastic if it does. The more lads exposed to senior A championship at schools level, the better. I know Gorey CS finally seem to be getting their house in order due to the effort being put in- on paper they have a serious team in both codes this year.

That was me on another thread. Will we field a combined colleges team again at hurling? Goreys population has exploded the last 20 years. Hopefully the school and local clubs will benefit in the years to come.
