To add to that someone from Belclare shouldn't brag about Galway hurling , ye didn't care about hurling in north Galway until we started winning and the footballers went through a bad patch. I doubt any player or panelist has ever been to Belclare and id say 99% of people there have never even picked up a hurl. It's footballing country leave the hurling to the boys from South Galway Galway2019 (Galway) - Posts: 55 - 19/05/2019 12:46:42 2185469 Link 1 |
I think you're right. Hurling and football are too different sports. They might be under the term "Gas but like it or not they are totally different games. If you grew up following hurling It's difficult to get more or as excited about your counties orher code. What about Galway and mayo county handballers. The interest in a game develops over time. Through passion and tradition. You can't just buy it from a ticket. Galway have a much larger population. But have to compete with more rugby, hurling and soccer especially in the city. I live here and notice it. Mayo have half the pop but a more faithful pop around the big ball and that's all there is to it. The two cancel each other out and no divide compared to Dublin and everyone else. GameOfTyrones (Tyrone) - Posts: 469 - 19/05/2019 13:13:55 2185475 Link 2 |
The basketball scene in Ballina is not so strong. Even it was why would it be a shame if it was strong?

A few here are a bit too influenced by Sky sports with their sacking,4 year deals and contract talk. Its GAA lads, managers can come and go as they please. ispeakwisdom (Roscommon) - Posts: 2487 - 19/05/2019 13:40:24 2185481 Link 3 |
I'm glad I have more things in my life to look forward to the arguing with people I don't know on this forum, enjoy your day I'm off to watch our footballers play Sligo while you sit at home and give out about Mayo and their fans.

The point is, you cant mock the lack of Galway footballers support when there's no support whatsoever for the Mayo hurlers. Mayo's basically a one code county and thats fine.. Theres a reason the Galway hurlers play in Leinster. candlewax (Galway) - Posts: 298 - 19/05/2019 14:43:23 2185494 Link 1 |
Only a few hurling clubs in mayo...nearest hurling club to me is 30km away...it's not in our blood. I don't know for historical reasons why hurling isn't big in mayo but that's the way it is...

It's big in Tooreen, so big that they had to split it in two!

I was going to have a go at everyone who instead of obsessing over crowd sizes and hurling in Mayo, should be paying attention to the actual championship. But then I listened to the Galway-Sligo game and all I have to say is: festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3148 - 19/05/2019 17:04:51 2185517 Link 0 |
13 point win for Galway but fair to say it was never a 13 point game. Galway only led by 2 points at half time then got two goals in a minute midway into the 2nd half and put gloss on the victory with 1-2 late on. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3609 - 19/05/2019 17:13:25 2185519 Link 1 |
It reminds of 2017. Roscommon were given very little chance in Connacht, ran up big scores in challenge matches in their champioship buildup, we both know what happened then. Very little being said about Anthony Cunngham's coaching abilities, arguably he has more united support in Roscommon than McStay had. Hopefully we won't be as complacent next Saturday as some pundits seem to be. May the best team win.

5,300 in Sligo today...? Very Poor crowd for a Connacht semi final even if Sligo are at a low ebb...you'd get more at a league game. More Mayo people travelled to NYC ;).....now that's enough from me on that.... Anyway it should ramp up a notch or two next weekend on what I believe will be a closer game than many think....winners go to Salthill so all to play for.. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11563 - 19/05/2019 18:04:33 2185537 Link 5 |
No surprise coming from you. We're you in Sligo today? Result never in doubt.Sligo played with 13 men behind the ball even when they had a strong breeze behind them which resulted in a poor spectacle. Connacht final will be a whole new ball game. Okay,Mayo have good support but no need to constantly harp on about it!! Mayo Roscommon will hopefully be the best game, in terms of quality in this years championship next weekend. Although Down Armagh didn't disappoint today! dublin5 (Dublin) - Posts: 30 - 19/05/2019 18:37:59 2185552 Link 3 |
Apples and oranges you say ? Moycullen has a population of around 1,500 plays in the Mens Super League the other Galway team in the Mens Super League is Maree a small village outside Oranmore. Ballina has a population of 10,000 and do not compete in the National league

Galway full value for 13 points. Could've had more goals. Sligo offered very little. It might only have been 2 points at half time but Galway were cutting through a lot. Only a matter of time before the goals came.

You are very negative towards Galway and very pro mayo? have you heard of Ballygar, sylane or Abbey?

And in 2012 Tuam was the best decked out town colour wise prior to the hurling final that year which surprised me even if there are plenty of people in North Galway who support our hurlers.

Coming for me? the state of you for not liking me calling things as there were for that Galway v Sligo game. What will you be like if Galway as i expect lose the Connacht final? and Galway regardless of the result will play with 13 men behind the ball so don't be criticizing little old Sligo.
