You nearly had me until you said "Mayo team in September is a much more difficult proposition" ha ha good one bud! The_DOC (Galway) - Posts: 769 - 10/08/2018 15:11:21 2131562 Link 2 |
Clarify, won nothing? As opposed to Dublin or as opposed to Mayo? The_DOC (Galway) - Posts: 769 - 10/08/2018 15:12:47 2131563 Link 0 |
I'm seeing odds of mainly 7/1 for that 2014 match, including from Paddy Power. It actually resulted in Paddy Power's worst month in terms of the payout in the match, which suggests a lot of people didn't think it was as unlikely as the odds suggested. You won't see anywhere near as much money going on Galway this weekend. This was a very prophetic article before the match: https://www.google.ie/amp/s/amp.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/wherity-likes-the-crazy-odds-on-donegal-surprising-dublin-284105.html WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2318 - 10/08/2018 15:23:17 2131566 Link 0 |
I distinctly remember staking at 10/1 because I had the minors and seniors in a double that day! I think the odds on Galway are crazy though and the handicap even crazier, I expect it to be very very tight. JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 10/08/2018 15:38:46 2131572 Link 0 |
the experts are saying that Mayo should be there instead as they are #2 in Ireland, can they play tomorrow? maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1226 - 10/08/2018 16:16:18 2131581 Link 0 |
Was it Brendan Devanny who flagged the Donegal win against the dubs about 2/3 weeks before hand?

Yes I recall him telling Off the Ball 'a great defensive team against a great attacking team, there'll only be wan wunner there!!'. I don't see the parallel with tomorrow though. Donegal were a champion outfit at the time, Galway are not yet. Dublin have matured with winning too, and aren't getting easier to beat, as their record proves. The only encouragement I see about taking on Dublin this year is that the form of 3or4 of their younger forwards has been below par to date. Galway will need that trend to continue tomorrow to keep in touch.

Game will be closer than many think. Surly a different Galway will show up to the one that lost to Monaghan. The league final can be discounted because you get the feeling in the league that neither team is at full tilt. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11563 - 10/08/2018 18:50:24 2131604 Link 2 |
Yes and No. Galway played against 14 men in both games, yet won neither. It was a full strength Galway team, I think, on both occassions. Bernard and Flynner are now available to the Dubs, Cian is in full flow and Howard has matured beyond his years. Despite the bravado from certain Galway quarters, don't tell me that the hammering at home to Monaghan will not have psychologically affected them. That was not a meaningless game. Beat Monaghan and ease your path to an historic final appearance, lose and face the best team to play the game. What would anyone do? Having said all of that, Galway have been our toughest oponents all year. Tyrone would be next in the queue but Galway will be a tough challenge for this Dublin team. If Galway play below par Dublin will destroy them. If they play above and Dublin misfire then this will be close. But we all know this. Bring it on and may the best team win. Of the teams left, other than Dublin I would be delighted if Galway did it. Great session there in the league. Joxer (Dublin) - Posts: 4743 - 10/08/2018 20:04:56 2131619 Link 0 |
Ian Burke has been impressive in every championship game for Galway (bar last Sat) since he made his debut in the qualifier win over Donegal last year. Did not feature in the league due to the Corofin club success and a serious forward. Damo did not have him in the league final so Cooper and Philly might not be able to double mark to the same extent. Anyway we all know we need a big game but what is the point being in it if the bar is not set high.

Don't understand the misconception that has gone around that we played our strongest team in the draw in the league. Dublin rested less players than we did! 1. Ronán Ó Beoláin 4. David Wynne 3. Seán Andy Ó Ceallaigh 2. Eoghan Kerin 5. Gary O'Donnell 6. Johnny Duane 7. Cathal Sweeney 8. Paul Conroy 9. Ciarán Duggan 10. Thomas Flynn 11. Peter Cooke 12. Adrian Varley 13. Shane Walsh 14. Seán Armstrong 15. Barry McHugh The only guaranteed starters for tomorrow in that 15 are Sean Andy, Kerin, Sweeney, Flynn, one of Duggan or Cooke, and Shane Walsh. Obviously Conroy too if he was fit. Burke, Daly, Comer, Brannigan, Heaney, Seanie Kelly, Bradshaw, Kyne, Lavelle are all near guarantees if fit. Puts a completely different complexion on things. Now not that a league game is any real indicator, but those lads did well against a Dublin team who started McMahon, Cooper, Small, Lowndes, Fitzsimons, MDMA, McCarthy, Kilkenny, Rock and Andrews. On paper you'd expect the Dublin side to blow us away but it didn't transpire that way at all and yeah Dublin got a man sent off, but the conditions on the day were difficult and nearly count for an extra man in its own strange way depending which end you're playing into. To give a quick comment on tomorrow's game, I think we have the ability and style to really get after Dublin and put it up to them, but I don't think it's possible for us to keep the required intensity and quality for 70+ mins. We'll need Daly and Walsh to do some serious damage out in space, and open up chances for Comer and Burke. The backs will have to have the games of their live's as well, and we'll probably need at least 2 goals to stand a chance. Townee2018 (Galway) - Posts: 282 - 10/08/2018 23:12:55 2131645 Link 0 |
May the best team win. And on the day I hope it's Galway. May the officials have a great game and allow a free flowing spectacle that's actually enjoyable to watch. However Galway need more than a few things to go their way whereas Dublin don't need assistance jonno (Kildare) - Posts: 261 - 11/08/2018 00:45:38 2131652 Link 0 |
We did play against 14 men in both games, but only for a relatively short while. O'Gara's red in the drawn game was very late. The games were more than competitive while they were 15 vs 15 too. Galway's team for the drawn league game was not full strength. Around 7 players who'll be playing tomorrow didn't start, including Comer and Brannigan. Ian Burke didn't play at all. We'll need a lot to go right for us tomorrow, but every game's a new game. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2318 - 11/08/2018 04:01:35 2131658 Link 0 |

He also said donegal would win in '16 but what's the point in bringing that up, I love the way everyone predicts an upset against the Dubs and the minute we win their prediction is forgotten about, but you know one day we will be bet and that poster will be the first on to say "I told you's so" Someone will be right someday but not today Dubs are too good right now to lose to an inexperienced Galway team but no doubt Galway are coming. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 11/08/2018 09:05:22 2131671 Link 2 |
Goals will be very important today and whoever gets them will have a big say in who wins the match. Goals were the only difference between the Dubs and Donegal and Tyrone... if they didn't get those goals the results could have been different, the Dubs can be beaten and no better time to do it than today. katser2 (Galway) - Posts: 41 - 11/08/2018 09:50:08 2131680 Link 0 |
And if Dublin got more points than them sure points were the only difference between Dublin and Donegal/Tyrone.
