As a Monaghan supporter it's hard to be continuously optimistic after the team letting us down time and again on the big stage. Any time they make it to the big time they just can't close the deal. I want to say we'll win against Galway but with our "luck" in the championship over the years I can't help but think that Galway will likely come out on top. I suppose for a smaller county we punch above our weight but it's still annoying to watch the team not make it every time they get close. I don't think they let us down at all. That goal was a great finish in fairness by young Clifford. The part I was most disappointed with was after that when we should have worked a winning score. You couldn't fault effort of monaghan lads today but apart from McManus and o Connell we are a workmanlike team who give everything but just lack that little bit of composure in vital moments. They will give everything v Galway but honestly at this point have no idea if will be enough.

If Monaghan draw, they will have 4 points, and Kerry, assuming they beat Kildare can only reach 3 points. Galway and Monaghan will have 5 and 4 points respectively. Both qualify for the semi finals.

If Galway happen to come 2nd they will be playing Dublin in the semis. So there is no danger that they will field a weakened team here. I would imagine that they would prefer to play either tyrone or donegal in the semis. Monaghan only come 2nd if they draw or lose the game. If they lose, they rely on Kildare to get a result away to Kerry. This is not likely so they will be looking to win the game and therefore win the group. Monaghan have effectively got a knock out All Ireland Quarter final by the beach :-). They will bring thousands of supporters to Salthill and make it a fantastic occasion. Galway are in a semi final one week later, yes they will want to win at home, but will players really go into 50/50 tackles etc?! At this level small margins are the difference between teams. I feel Monaghan will jumping out of their skin and will bring a huge intensity. I have my doubts Galway will have the stomach for such a fight. You can't go out and play for a draw but yeah you're right a draw for Monaghan sees them through aswell

Yes but if we avoid defeat we avoid Dublin in the semi final a carrot worth aiming for. Seriously though listening to the Marty squad on radio coming back from Newbridge and all about Monaghan and Kerry. We are going about our business well given we are far from 'media darlings'. Monaghan are a season team but I sense most outside Galway don't realise where this team has come from and we have a few from the all Ireland u21 wins of 2011 and 213 so we have currency.

Half a loaf is better than no bread.If Monaghan won today,as they should have,they were in an All-Ireland semi final.Now,they may well leave Salthill in a fortnight , out of the Championship.

Why do Galway think it would be better meeting Dublin in a final rather than a Semi final? I would love a go at them in a semi? Maybe Galway should rest up and tend to their wounds instead of killing themselves in a game against a team that will be fighting like tigers. What for? To save Kerry? No matter what happens, we will have to beat Dublin to win an All Ireland. So avoiding another hard match after the hard Summer might be a smarter option. Kerry will come on a ton from the Monaghan game and will, I believe, rack up a big score against Kildare who have nothing to play for. Because of the winning tradition Kerry bring to semi finals and finals, it would be better for Galway if they did not go through. Galway have several players with minor injuries who need rest. Will KW go all out and give his 1st choice team the benefit of another tough full blooded battle, or will he give a chance to those who have been waiting on the bench, Cummins, Molloy, FOC etc. On the other hand I could not see the Kerry backs keeping out the Dubs in a semi-final, but Monaghan have the advantage of having beaten them in the NFL. giveitlong (Galway) - Posts: 1273 - 23/07/2018 08:43:15 2124967 Link 0 |

Very disappointed after yesterday's game, not so much about conceding the late goal but that Monaghan only played in snatches. Brilliant sometimes and poor others. But at the same time it's encouraging to know that the team have not played to their potential yet this year and plenty of areas that just need a bit more improvement and show more composure from the man with ball. I have heard some commentators say that Monaghan will find it hard to lift themselves for the next game which is laughable.....Monaghan are probably in the best possible position mentally.....all or nothing game where they go in as underdogs....They will give it everything in Salthill and win or lose the Galway lads will know they have been in a game as they will be hurting for a month after it....
