Meath Clubs In Leinster

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

All championships done and dusted meaning that the respective winners have Leinster campaigns to look forward to now.
Dunshaughlin up against St. Loman's of Westmeath in Navan on Sunday week. Loman's have a lot of experience in Leinster (they've won in Westmeath in 3 of the last 4 years and 8 of the last 12) and will be massive favourites. Dunshaughlin will also obviously be celebrating the county championship and may not be placing much importance on Leinster. But if they were to win, it would likely open up an easier path on paper with the Wexford champions in the quarter final.

Ratoath will be away to Bray Emmets of Wicklow in the Leinster Intermediate Club Hurling Championship on November 16th, so a long time to prepare. Bray beat Trim in the Leinster final a few years back. Opposite side of the draw to the Kilkenny champions but would face the Dublin or Wexford Intermediate Champions if we get through.

Meath Hill will be away to Caragh of Kildare who won the Kildare Intermediate championship yesterday. That'll be on Saturday week so not much time to celebrate. Get past that and it's (on paper) an easier quarter final, away to the Kilkenny SFC champions Dicksboro.

NOM will make the trip to Wicklow to face Avondale in the Leinster Junior Club Hurling Championship on November 9th. They'd be home to Mountmellick of Laois if they overcome the first round tie. They'd likely face the Kilkenny Junior champions in the semi finals if they got that far.

And Dunsany will make their first foray into Leinster competition in their history, facing Aughrim of Wicklow in the quarter final, likely in Navan, on November 9th. A Laois/Dublin/Kilkenny/European opponent would follow in the semi final if they win that one.

the Meath senior football champions seem to have the same faith in Leinster as the Irish rubby team. Quarter final exit every time!

Meath Hill fall at the first hurdle against what seems to be a strong Caragh side. Best of luck to Dunshaughlin tomorrow.

Here we go. Luckily for Robbie Brennan he has more clubs than Dunshaughlin to pick from. Of the Dunshaughlin team today, Matthew Costello is the only one who is a guaranteed starter in the Meath team. Gray and Kinsella are outside the starting the 15 in my opinion and no other Dunshaughlin player is up to county standard. That performance and defeat was coming for Dunshaughlin. They were blessed against Dunboyne and again against Wolfe Tones.

Yes, Meath club football has a lot of improving to do across the board at all levels. The standard of skill and in particular Strength and Conditioning levels are way off other counties in Leinster, namely Dublin, Kildare, Louth and now Westmeath. Dunshaughlin looked like a poor intermediate team compared to St Lomans.

Well done to Dunsany winning their first ever provincial game. They'll be up against Kilcavan of Laois for a place in the Leinster final.
Commiserations to NOM and Dee Rangers.

I agree with some of what you say but not with others.
I think you weren't at enough club championship games going by your comment in relation to Ruairi Kinsella, he was injured for the Loman's game and probably should never have started but for the entire Senior Championship he was the most outstanding player. Not only was he the Senior Championship overall top scorer, even in the games he didn't score in, like the Summerhill game, his work-rate was immense and he won six turnovers in the first half alone and for me he was man of the match even that day. Kinsella is the engine of Dunshaughlin and after he pulled up in the first few minutes against St. Loman's , it was even more apparent how vital he is to Dunshaughlin.
I hope Robbie Brennan is more astute at picking his starting fifteen.
As for Conor Gray, Colm O' Rourke brought him back into Meath way too soon after his serious illness & surgery, very few people thought when he was lying in his bed recovering in the Mater that he would play any football in 2024, but be in no doubt he will be flying in 2025.
The MVP's in the three 2024 championships were Kinsella, Breslin & Harken.

Another loss, albeit a late one, means that Dunsany are the only Meath team to win a game in Leinster this year.

Well done Dunsany. Through to a Leinster final after beating Kilcavan of Laois 1-14 to 1-10. They'll be home in Navan in the final against Ballinagar of Offaly in the final.

Time will tell how poor they are. Did either Longwood or Nobber last longer than 1 year when they got promoted recently?

Hard luck to Dunsany, never got going at all and that will annoy them more than anything. Very poor support for the Meath champions. They don't seem to have a big support themselves and very few Meath folk in to shout for them. Ballingar had a huge crowd roaring their team on.

Thought despite defeat Harkin was excellent and tried his heart out. Looks like he has really developed since last seeing him play for Meath. Ballingar had a number of very strong players especially for Junior level. I really think Offaly county board and Duignan in particular has pulled things together there and they could start reaping rewards and county level.
Meath Club football not in a great place and not helped by county board.

Caragh only started to pull away from Meath Hill in the latter stages after the north meath men went down to 14 for a black card. A very competitive game for the most part. Caragh are now Leinster champions.

Genuine question - What would you suggest needs to change?

Ballingar who beat Dunsany yesterday were Offaly IFC winners. There are only eight clubs in the Offaly SFC, eight more in the SFC B (winner goes into the Leinster IFC) and then eight in the IFC.
You could well make the arguement that a similar setup in Meath would work well and let clubs who exist for the sole reason of claiming to be 'senior clubs' compete at their own level.

Similar to what has come in for the hurling

Caragh have proved to be a very good side, wining a competitive Leinster intermediate club championship.

Plus from all accounts I've heard, Meath Hill hadn't left the pub in 2 weeks, were carrying injuries and just narrowly lost out in the closing stages.
