Great appointment. Feeling somewhat optimistic about next year and hopefully we'll see Meath becoming a true force in Gaelic football again. LoyalRoyal (None) - Posts: 464 - 19/09/2024 09:42:02 2570676 Link 0 |
Every reason to be optimistic about the future of Meath. Hope he stays strong,no doubt he has already had neighbors calling recommending who to pick. Ashrules (Dublin) - Posts: 553 - 19/09/2024 09:48:49 2570678 Link 0 |
That is fantastic news this morning. Change was needed and the county board have delivered. Well done. I like the bit of Ulster steel thrown in - I think we badly need to import some of that into the county. We used to be a county that was even more Ulster in our toughness than Ulster teams...we've gone very very soft in recent times. Crinigan (Meath) - Posts: 1352 - 19/09/2024 10:07:29 2570689 Link 0 |
I'll give some credit to the CB for getting the appointment done relatively quickly after the O'Rourke fiasco. Brennan being in place in time for the knockouts should give him/his team plenty of opportunities to attend games and figure out the best options for the squad. While decision and appointment may be best for all concerned, there has been little or no input or opportunity to have from clubs or members of county board committee. I suppose this will avoid any unwanted discussions or difficult questions. winatallcost (Meath) - Posts: 594 - 19/09/2024 11:23:30 2570708 Link 1 |
Wonder who they'll select as the Meathman in the backroom. I'll like to see Brian Farrell in there, he's got Castleknock to the quarters this year, they may well get past Cuala on Friday, and hearing him on a podcast last year he spoke well about the challenges facing Meath football, he was very clear on how we're way off the pace in terms of the club championship standards. That level of realism is useful. MeathAbroad (Meath) - Posts: 101 - 19/09/2024 11:26:55 2570710 Link 1 |
Is the appointment straight away or is he staying on with Crokes until they finish up? meathgreen (Meath) - Posts: 6 - 19/09/2024 11:33:39 2570711 Link 0 |
Look's like he will stay with Crokes until their season ends.

He is staying with Kilmacud until the end of the Dublin championship per Off the ball this morning. So will only be Kilmacud manager until November at the latest

If the other lads can get to work and he drops in twice a week from October to January, that's fine for me. I'd personally have hoped he would win the Dublin championship and then let someone else take over for the Leinster and All Ireland...

The way it should be done. Why should there be any input from clubs? That would only cause division and irrelevant people trying to get their two cents in. County boards very regularly get criticised, ours have been fantastic here. Got rid of a clearly underperforming manager, and appointed a good manager with an excellent backroom staff. It ticks all the boxes that they were looking for, a wealth of intercounty experience and a manager that knows the club scene in Meath. Seen a poster asking about who Robbie would bring in from Meath, he doesn't need anyone from Meath, he is constantly at Meath championship games so will have a good understanding of what is out there. He is also coaching the Dunboyne minors at the moment. V interested to hear why Flynn is not part of the management team. contributingtoamelee (Meath) - Posts: 55 - 19/09/2024 12:27:17 2570730 Link 0 |
Ok calm down. Lets not say they have done a fantastic job. Looks a decent appointment on paper. Dragged out getting rid of an underperforming manager. Should have been done within 2 weeks of the last game not over 2 months later.

Irish Times said he ( like MoR with Glen) will remain in place until Crokes season end's. Don't see it as a major issue one way or the other. So in the end it came down to two candidate's,SR was just another rumour.

That is what he is doing. He is finishing with Kilmacud after the Dublin championship, not taking them for the Leinster or all Ireland if they are in it. That is what Tommy Roooney said on off the ball this morning anyway

The county board dragged out the process of deciding on COR's future but to me they have handled the appointing of his successor very well. Two good tickets and Lar Walk is unlucky to lose out but I marginally preferred this ticket. Corey and McMahon have been involved in successful teams as coaches, Corey with an Ulster title with Cavan and all Ireland semi with Monaghan particularly impressive). Brennan is a very good man manager from my experience and will mesh well with a young team and give them confidence. Bernard Flynn not being on the ticket is absolutely no harm in my mind given that his coaching record isn't all that great and he caused plenty of distractions in the past few years and a backroom team member should not be a distraction. It was mentioned another Meath man would join the ticket I would like a Brian Farrell, Conor Gillespie, Joe Sheridan or Marcus Brennan type. Young up and coming in the coaching/management game but still with a decent record behind them. Will also be interested to see if Barry Horgan is staying on with S&C, if hope he is as continuity with that is important. I am not expecting miracles at all but I think we can start to look up towards the top of D2 rather than the bottom. The targets for me are top 4 of division 2 and get out of the groups and into the last 12 of the all Ireland. The difference in coaching track record from this year is stark so I think we can expect to see an improvement in performance and the players improving as the year goes on. Very happy to have the appointment done and let's hope everybody can row in behind this management LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 1527 - 19/09/2024 13:49:42 2570753 Link 1 |
I am happy with RB getting the job , Lar Wall had a good coaching ticket also , so it was good to see two good options on the table . WhyTheLongFace (Meath) - Posts: 934 - 19/09/2024 14:21:11 2570759 Link 0 |
Very happy with this appointment and backroom team. Proven winners at the top level of the game. Best of luck to them. We badly need some positivity. men_of_49 (Meath) - Posts: 2003 - 19/09/2024 14:39:12 2570766 Link 0 |
I think in one of the reports it was suggested there would be a Meath person added to ticket. Agree its not absolutely necessary but it's still good to have someone there, particularly if they're young and can learn.

Contrasting views, Robbie Brennan doesn't see any issue in getting named and on the other hand COR wouldn't names his new coaching ticket because lads were still involved in the club. The more I hear and see the more I'm glad a change has come about. Maybe COR didn't have anyone hence County board pulling the plug, maybe its time to move on from all the greats ( on the field ) of Meath football. NO more jobs for the boys..

They evaluated the situation, got player feedback, the players expressed their willingness of a top class coach, they allowed COR time to get one. He couldn't get one and so they gave him an ultimatum. Effectively jump before you get pushed. They then went and got a good manager with a top class backroom staff. Tyrone only just got a manager, Westmeath, Clare, Derry, and Monaghan all are without managers, and Kevin McStay is only meeting with the players this week to decide their future. They have absolutely done a fantastic job. Evaluated everything got feedback and then acted on that feedback. Could you imagine the uproar if they had gotten rid of O Rourke two weeks after the season was over. They have played the whole thing very cleverly and suspect they have got the outcome they wanted from the beginning. contributingtoamelee (Meath) - Posts: 55 - 19/09/2024 16:50:20 2570816 Link 1 |
