Good to see the news of players returning to the fold. Not expecting miracles but I expect us to see a more competent level of performance and more coherent plan in terms of depth chart and pecking order of the team and how we want to play. Top half of division 2 and get out of the group and into the last 12 should be the goals for next year LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 1527 - 12/11/2024 12:22:00 2579348 Link 0 |
Are you suggesting Menton can make an impact in fullback/fullforward line in one one one battles with top quality players in their pomp? I would have some reservations with this comment.

I'm not claiming it's a guaranteed succesful strategy. But for the past 15+ years all inter-county players have needed, as a bare minimum, the stamina to cover every blade of grass for 50+ minutes. It's what had led to so many relatively early retirements. But the new rules leave the door open for some players to play a position-specific role where covering 10km in a game isn't a requirement. It's presumably what coaxed Michael Murphy back in Donegal. And some older man-marking players will also see it as a reason to keep going when their legs may not be able to take them on long runs forward any more. Now, I'm obviously not putting Menton anywhere near that bracket of player. But I imagine it's part of the reason why RB is considering older players next year, that the rules could mean the emphasis is no longer solely on players with big engines/younger players. That the new rules could lead to fresh thinking about what skillsets a county team needs. Menton or other comeback players could be dropped by early January, who knows, but I'm glad RB is casting the net wide at this stage. I just can't see Menton in the fullback or full forward lines. O Neill, Keoghan, Ryan and Lavin would all be a head of him. He doesn't fit the mould of a big ball winning full forward, if that's what RB is looking for then Costello is best placed or even Fiachra Ward or Daithi McGowan. It will be interesting what he does with Menton because there's also about 4 to 5 better options at midfield in the squad never mind lads not being on the panel. Now Menton brings something that only Keoghan, Harnan and O Sullivan have and that is a wealth of experience. UsernameInvalid (Meath) - Posts: 409 - 14/11/2024 15:35:39 2579624 Link 0 |
Full back line no dont see him there,Full forward maybe! He can field a ball and can score and wouldn't be easy bet in the air.As you say it could be for experience but would he comeback for a bit part role?He would be a good option to have coming off the bench with 20 mins or so to go.

We will be looking for inside ball winners that have speed off the mark and take a score like in the way the great full forward lines we had in late 80s and 90s. Menton dies not fit that mould. Perhaps some sort of an impact out the field but let's see. He has experience and strength along with Harnan but they won't the massive saviours we hope they will be. Collective improvement is key and actually crucial to that will the impact and development of talented young players from the U20 grade. Would like to know how many of these guys have been called. Murphy and Armstrong were standouts last year! winatallcost (Meath) - Posts: 594 - 14/11/2024 19:31:27 2579642 Link 0 |
.... more specifically Keoghan Menton and Cillian are all leaders and culture carriers, they will raise the bar in terms of expectations and standars, the fact they will do it at their age with the life commitments that age brings with no guarantees of game time....God those three have given so much ,it's a dream to have any of them involved next year. goosey (Meath) - Posts: 63 - 15/11/2024 04:05:34 2579659 Link 0 |
I am sure the new management will be looking at all players on the panel during in house training matches and challenge matches prior to the league starting. They will be watching how players adapt to the new rules. They will pick their team/panel based on this rather than on any past achievements with club or county.

It appears from the talk that the setup with Meath is very professional. I heard a few lads in getting a chance which is good to see. A few from the Regional games appear to have put there hands up. Looking forward to supporting them in 25. Didn't have that feeling last year.

How many of a panel are included at the moment? I guess it's 40 plus? Is this made up of 30 or so names that were there last two years? Assume it will be trimmed at end of year prior to final league preparation. Really hope they get the best 24 for the year ahead and there are a few U20s from last year pushing or actually getting starts.

Could you elaborate a bit regarding set up being very professional. In what areas compared to previous? What talk btw? Fair to say that new lads are tried with every manager, that's normal enough. royalproxy (Meath) - Posts: 46 - 18/11/2024 15:25:27 2580166 Link 2 |
There's always an inside source or "talk from within the camp" that by sheer coincidence lines up with the poster's view about any given manager.

I was in Dunganny on Saturday at the u20's game and the seniors were training. From what I saw everything was well prepared and the lads went from one part of training to the next without delay. They are all wearing Hearth monitors , GPS units. A number of physio's, Phycologist, dietitian and masseuse. Took the opportunity to speak to a club man who was training and he said compared to last year its night and day. Said there is a real energy about the setup and everything is very positive. So I don't think there is anything poster boy of that type on an environment.

Or…I was talking to a lad, he said…so it must be true.

What's the story with November training for inter-county teams? I thought it officially started Dec 7? Is it banned earlier or just advised against? MeathAbroad (Meath) - Posts: 101 - 19/11/2024 10:10:59 2580262 Link 0 |
Can anyone watch the seniors train in Dungany or are those sessions closed? GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7703 - 19/11/2024 10:43:02 2580269 Link 0 |
The gates are open, nothing stopping anyone going in to watch them if you really want too.

You must be a COR fan. When a senior player says it then Ill take it that he knows a things or two about previous set ups.

Probably wouldn't even be worth your time tbh. Could see a higher standard of training from most senior clubs in Mayo I'd say haha
