Maybe you had intended to say after the Down game we will be brought down to earth - and perhaps you are right on that!"
The overall point made here is that the Waterford game is used to increase learning and in particular improve on our history of poor and slow starting .The learning has to be transferred to improve . We cannot allow any team build up an early lead, If learning is used fully from here onwards then we have a good chance of winning the Tailteann cup. As i keep on about learning is used to structure training sessions to meet identified need . If that does not happen it is hard to be optimistic as i have said in a recent post. So yes there are conditions built in as stated previousely. I expect management will respond to the needs .

He might not be the messiah but he's the best forward in meath.

Sorry phrased it all wrong. Yes I meant after that game when we face Down. I was trying a play on words. That's why I wrote Down with a capital. If we can't beat the 31st ranked team by 10 plus points on Saturday then we are in a dire situation. Waterford are shocking they would make that awful tipp team look good

What a stupid post,

Nobody thinks he's gonna come in and start hitting big scoring tallies, he's just a good young player who can make a difference in a game or be an option off the bench. Nothing wrong with people looking forward to seeing one of the best from the underage teams playing for the seniors.

Your being negative about a young lad who hasn't even had a chance yet for the sake of complaining

The Waterford game is another opportunity for management to try another few younger players, debutants even, new patterns, but ultimately still the same spine of the team and the same emphasis on keeping a tempo over 70/75 minutes. Do that and the next game should look after itself. However it isnt terribly long ago Waterford travelled to Breffni and beat Cavan in a league game, and this is their home patch, so they deserve respect. After that we go into the business end of the group with a view to the knockout stages.

If this Meath team can find confidence and form, get good scores into Lynch, Morris, Costello etc the next day again, build more confidence into players around the middle and tight exchanges and have another few coming back from injury for the Down game, then I dont see them being far off topping this group. It would be a big upward curve from the league and the Offaly match, but it isnt beyond this player pool, especially given the preparation afforded since the Offaly game.
Meath can win this tournament. I dont think they will, but they could.

I totally agree with your post - It was more RD's comment about being brought down to earth in the game but I suspect he meant the Down game.

I would like to see more consistency in terms of team selection - give guys a couple of runs. Take Lynch for example really good in one game, then struggles but good again when given the chance. That is just the nature of it! Jack Flynn was consistently one of our best players in the league, then gets moved to half forward and people start giving out about him! I think he is still our best long term bet in mid field!

Anyway - here's hoping we get off to a great start against Waterford and really put them to the sword. Then we should be ready for a right go at Down!

I don't understand why posters don't believe Meath can win the Tailteann Cup. Meath are the highest ranked team in the competition (6th in Division 2). As they win games confidence should improve and they can put a bad league and tame exit to Offaly in Leinster championship behind them. There are talented players in Meath. They just need to keep working hard and believe in themselves and they will reap the rewards eventually. Hon the Royals !

The reason posters don't think we can win the Tailteann cup is because we aren't playing well and don't look to have any consistent set up or game plan or even selection policy. We lost to Offaly who are another Tailteann cup team. Down beat Donegal and seem better organised than we do. Cavan on paper and on past performances probably a better record than we do. Maybe you are right and it's completely a confidence thing. But I wouldn't be believing in our chances too much and would probably expect a semi final loss at this stage. The Down group game will give us far more of an indicator of whether things have improved since league and Leinster

For me it's all about the Down game. No matter what team we put out v Waterford we will hammer them. I'm trying very hard to be respectful to them but honestly they are bad, I'd rate anyone ahead of them at this stage. I can see 5 maybe 6 goals for us. We will learn nothing from Saturday night. But winning like loosing is a habit, unfortunately Down will win this weekend too. The neutral game likely to be clones (hardly neutral to them) but still not newry. That game will tell a lot as winner goes straight into quarters with looser having to play prelim (if my understanding is correct). So I'd leave the likes of keoghan and jones on bench for Waterford and try some panel players. No point in injuring them when the game is a foregone conclusion.

Frayne is a very good footballer and will be great senior club footballer for Summerhill. But he will not make it at senior inter county football. I wonder do some people realise what's required to play inter county. He does not have the athleticism or pace to get around the pitch.

Someone also thought it was hilarious on this forum when i said Conor Gray should be defintley starting for the seniors a few weeks ago. Not so hilarious now. Frayne is the best underage player i've seen in meath in a long time.

I have seen him play numerous times including against Dublin this year when he was quiet and did look to lack a bit of the pace you talk about, but he has big ability and I think he is well able to win his own ball. As i commented at the time, I think it was negligence by management to be playing him at 11 on the 20's asking him to do too much and not play to his strengths which is being lethal around the goals. I don't think hes some messiah as has been mentioned but when I saw this conversation I thought I'd thrown in my own 2 cents. He's a good player who could definitely have a future playing for Meath.

Playing a lad out of position is now classed a negligence.. Good god.

Negligence could be the wrong word but definitely didn't give that team the best chance to win!

Wind up ? Anyway i think the dogs in the street know that on form to date we will NOT beat Down,Cavan and maybe even a.n .other. I think every player who deserved a chance got a chance in fairness. Maybe so and so may be worth a chance later. We have to draw the line somewhere God knows our weaknesses are well known .So we have to work on them .by structured training sessions .Otherwise WHY HAVE A TRAINING SESSION ?
To help build confidence we develop on what may be green shoots..We scored 1 19 (yes against weak opposition) let them at it again for this match. Midfield continue with Jones and Grey surely there look to be worth the chance as a partnership for this match Slow starts ? An ideal opportunity to bring this problem into sharp focuss. Freetaking for this match leave it to 1 man to help establish confidence for this important task
I would refrain from "resting "any player.and refrain for now in giving anyone else"a go" because he might be a neighbours child or better still" a decent skin"
To me this is a very good opportunity to confirm or deny the green shoots theory, easpecially to build confidence for scoring forwards, freetakers, midfielders, to field and thus give goalkeeper more options on kickouts
For me right now its all about learning still, stick with what we have got because we have little option IF Walsh is fit give him a chance. It has to be about improvement in everything including mental preparation (slow starts etc)
Clearly needs have been identified.........structure and content for training sessions have to meet the needs or we can forget improvement, and thus forget about beating ANY team of substance.
I have full confidence that Colm knows what is needed I believe he will deliver in this competition ,but nowhere near ready to compete with the big guns. That will take a good bit more time as he said and thats ok
Finally, i rest my case about needs, structured training to improve. I will shut up and stop repeating myself now.

Why does it need a 'good bit more time' to compete with the likes of down and cavan? Both division 3 sides, have we regressed that much under this management team?

Unless in a position to do a great job no one should take on a role that is important to the community. A mistake often made. Look at the amount of referees that should do something different.
