Heard there is a motion going to county board this weekend regarding quarter finals , Dunsany want an open draw which is delaying it. thelutch (Meath) - Posts: 1073 - 27/04/2022 07:06:16 2413473 Link 0 |
Open draw will surely give them the edge in the junior after all these years. hurlit (Meath) - Posts: 425 - 27/04/2022 09:59:28 2413508 Link 1 |
Just an absolutely ridiculous motion. I hope they are laughed out of it

I agree. Sure teams could be guaranteed to finish first or second after round 2 and if its an open draw it doesn't matter if you finish top or not so the last game would be a dead rubber therefore they could rest all their key players which could mean another team missing out on the knockouts . Would damage the integrity of the Championship IMO. Leave it be. No doubting there is some issues in the Meath Championships but this certainly isn't one of them Blackspot09 (Meath) - Posts: 1012 - 27/04/2022 11:00:32 2413542 Link 0 |
Its a completely pointless motion for the exact reason you've pointed out, the idea of winning the group is to be rewarded with the perceived easier draw against a 2nd place team. However the draw being on May 9th isn't any real issue, still roughly 3 months before the competition starts which is plenty of time.

I would imagine if it was a draw, it would be each top team drawn against an a team that finished second. not everyone into an open draw :/ de_man (Meath) - Posts: 192 - 27/04/2022 12:57:14 2413589 Link 0 |
Whatever about the actual proposals, I think it's pretty unacceptable for the competition formats to still be undecided days before the draws are to be made. They should be set in stone in January, and if anyone wants changes then they can suggest them for the following year. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1668 - 27/04/2022 13:11:30 2413596 Link 11 |
Ehhhh then it's not an open draw though!!!

The past few years, it has always been a case that a team finishing first in its group plays a team that finished second in another group and if I recall, teams that were in the same group wouldn't be able to meet in a semi final either! I am pretty sure the year that Ratoath beat Summerhill in the final, they had both been in the same group in the qualifying stages and in fact I think Summerhill won the group game! After the re-structure in 2020 I think by and large the Meath championship is a brilliant structure. Anmhi364 (Meath) - Posts: 65 - 27/04/2022 14:25:02 2413639 Link 1 |
This premier championship setup is nonsense hurlit (Meath) - Posts: 425 - 27/04/2022 15:55:16 2413685 Link 0 |

Open draw for quarter finals

I would be in favour of open draw for 1/4 finals but definitely dont like the way its known from once the draw is made that is A1 v B2 etc esp when there are 5 groups where D & E have to go into a premilary 1/4 final. juicy (Meath) - Posts: 402 - 28/04/2022 12:04:40 2413825 Link 0 |
If its an open draw and team has secured first or second spot whats to stop them resting 6 or 7 key men for the last game? One of the other teams in the group could miss out because that team rested half their starters. Does this not damage the integrity of the competition? Every now and again there is a dead rubber last group game for a team that has secured top spot but doesn't happen that often. We should be trying to limited the amount dead rubber group games not increase them which an open draw would do. Blackspot09 (Meath) - Posts: 1012 - 28/04/2022 13:03:15 2413846 Link 1 |
I think Juicys point was that a team that finished 1st can still only meet a team that finishes 2nd but that it would be a random draw after the group stage rather than knowing the exact layout of the 1/4 and semi finals from the get go. I'd agree with that aswell, teams will still fight to finish top of their group but won't know quarter final opponents until say the Monday after the groups finish ratlag (Meath) - Posts: 582 - 28/04/2022 14:22:16 2413884 Link 0 |
Yeah fair enough if that was the point he was making. Defintely better than having a full open draw. Out of curiosity would the team that finishes top of group A be able to be drawn against the 2nd place in group A in the open draw 1/4s or would it be you can't face the team from your group in the 1/4s?
