I actually don't think Jack Flynn was on underage panels. He didn't play for Meath at minor. But point taken, he doesn't seem like a free taker. Suppose McGowan kicks long ones and was a year older so would have kicked them all the way up too I'd say

How could you be keeping Hogan over Colgan. We lost about 75% of our own kickouts. He kept booting them long even though we were being destroyed on them. Never even looked to go short bar 1 I can remember. He also didn't come out with the ball when it was given back to them. Invited Mayo on and tried risky out of the hands kick passes out of our defense. Once in the second half he found a man doing this. But he kicked a ball over the sideline doing it in the first half which directly led a Mayo goal where his effort at stopping is was very poor. One of my biggest takeaways from that game was that Colgan is number 1 by a long way, as he should have been last year. I don't see how you could be calling for Colgan ahead of him

Not a lot to take from today, its all about Kildare in next game. seadog54 (Meath) - Posts: 2196 - 30/05/2021 16:05:04 2346548 Link 8 |
Newman back. McGill played well. Menton played well. Banty played well and looks a decent forward. Needs to be given more of a chance. Not a lot else after that I'm afraid.

Colgan is still the number one, however today Mayo did what neither Westmeath or Down did, they pushed up on our kickouts, making sure there were no free men and forced keeper to go long in the knowledge they had much the better fielders. Would Colgan have fared much better if faced with that press?

They played a different team than the one named. But yes this team that had won 6 of 7 games on the way to promotion in 2019, and won their first 2 games this year are somehow a divison 2/3 team in your mind. Even though we were in divison 3 for 1 year and that was when some of this team were 11 years old. Honestly starting to think you're a wind up account

Completley agree ! Thought Eamon Wallace did well ! Great to see Newman back ! No other positives really

He couldn't have fared much worse if we're being honest. He might have tried 1 or 2 short

It's the same team that lost every game in Div 1 and hasn't beaten a top 8 team in any competitive match. It's a div 2 team and not necessarily a top div 2 team depending on the makeup of Div 2 in a given year. Ask yourself, is McEntee getting even close to the most of the best footballers in Meath or the best available team? Seems so little original thought goes into his setup. Would see it similar. Jack O'Connor kick a good score early but was quiet after that. Newman showed his class when he came on and Eamon Wallace kicked 2 good scores. Not many other lads who haven't been playing but their hand up. McEntee, Harnan and Keoghan solidified things a lot when they came in at half

Mickey Newman returning, James Conlon had a good game. That's about it.

MN back a big bonus, Conlon,Menton and Wallace pick of the bunch, but a mixed bag from McGill

Very disappointing performances from most of Meath's panel members. After all the talk about many good young players, it is surprising that we are still very reliant on a half fit Michael Newman. Keeper situation is what it is. Skill levels of alot of our players the most disappointing thing. No ball winners out the field for long kickout options. Campion, Scully, Harkin, Hogan, Flynn made very impression with many of these guys on the panel for a few years. Wouldn't have very high hopes against Kildare or for Championship. winatallcost (Meath) - Posts: 594 - 30/05/2021 17:59:21 2346615 Link 2 |
None of them players will start v Kildare. Today was a day to give them a run and bring them on a bit. Out of what played today (that didn't play v Down etc) Conlon and wallace are the only two who will feature v Kildare. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 30/05/2021 18:28:32 2346628 Link 0 |
Disappointed that we didn't go for that gave more, should have fielded our strongest team and went for it, we need momentum and wins against teams like Mayo and I don't see the reasoning for putting out what was basically a cobbled together Meath team to play a team we are aspiring to match and indeed better in terms of their competitiveness year in year out, I suppose I'll give it a pass if we beat Kildare and get promoted but I'm just disappointed over the attitude towards that gave today. Its a coin toss to decide venue for Kildare game seadog54 (Meath) - Posts: 2196 - 30/05/2021 19:15:20 2346643 Link 4 |
Seems this game was treated as an opportunity to experiment by Meath. Personally I would've went out to win it as Meath badly need a win against a big gun but the next game is most important in the grander scheme of things and I guess shrewdness was the order of the day. In saying that if Meath fail to raise their game against Kildare next the decision to rail this match could come back as a bad call. If they go out and win then itll look like a masterstroke. Take it on the chin and move on. 3-11 to 1-05 at half time is very, very ugly, but a finishing score of 3-17 to 2-12 is somewhat respectable, regardless or not if Mayo gave up the ghost. This is exactly the type of final score we have become accustomed to against this level of opposition and all in all lads I dont think this game is really worth analysing. What would your starting team be. Surely Newman will feature at some stage now? Many of these guys have had substitute impacts so far but am really disappointed with the limited quality in the squad past the starting team.

Needlessly lost momentum. Even if a good performance in a narrow loss - would have kept momentum. McStay alluded to this in his commentary - not fair to give lads a baptism of fire in a made up team. Does them no good. Better off making max 3 debutants but keep main spine of team, at least for first half (like Mayo did). Crinigan (Meath) - Posts: 1352 - 30/05/2021 19:50:17 2346662 Link 12 |
I understand that richie and the fan in me feels the same. However when menton went down and for a little while I thought his hamstring had gone and not just a cramp as it turned out to be , the first thing that came into my head was why was he on the field. So I can understand andys thinking. It was a real mash up of a team with little or no leadership. I think as the second half proved we not that far off the likes of mayo. And that's why I'd love a final if we progress, but unfortunately won't happen as mayo will progress and it won't be played. Andy knows our all ire is in two weeks. Unlike some who say it's a 50/50 game, I actually think we are rightly firm favourites . I think we will win and win well. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 30/05/2021 20:43:32 2346678 Link 0 |
