Didn't say anything about a Keegan Cup. Just about these young lads improving the Cilles team a lot. Fairly sure under 21 is scrapped for good and it's an under 19 now so that may further hurt development

Cilles were in final in 2018 and got hammered with a very poor Minor team and they were in final last year and won it but Summerhill were the way better side for long periods and only for Bell and their Goalkeeper they would have been beat. They were very lucky to win. So you can win the Minor and it not translate to Senior. But this is unreal team, they have been playing this way since U12', U13 and all way up and have great players 1-20. This team should translate to Senior but you need the right people over them at Senior. Senior football is altogether different challenge Talking_Sense (Meath) - Posts: 209 - 12/09/2020 14:36:58 2291690 Link 0 |
I'd say they tested the waters then left a few lads off, they were winning at half time then conceded 4-4 while only scoring twice during the 3rd quarter.

Don't be counting your chickens Underage success is no guarantee of senior success Currently cilles are a mile off at senior and the standard in Meath is getting better and better The current minors may never ever line out at senior and even if thy do they may not be any good Enjoy the underage at the moment and don't be expecting more head4dblackspot (Meath) - Posts: 513 - 12/09/2020 20:45:42 2291734 Link 1 |
Lots of talk about stepping up to senior, about this bunch of players from cilles, but club gripes a side , not from cilles but it's a long time since I've seen a more accomplished and comfortable minor side at all positions. Dunboyne not a bad side but made look so so average. fitspert (Meath) - Posts: 25 - 13/09/2020 00:13:49 2291780 Link 1 |
Have to agree with @fitspert. These lads are only 16 or 17 so the conversation about senior is a bit premature. That said I watched that stream of the game vs Dunboyne the other night (fair play to Meath GAA) and it was a pleasure to watch. Those lads are certainly going very well this year and played a lovely style of football. well done to all involved! Didn't get to see that Dunshaughlin game but they too won well. I would say we are in for a cracking Div 1 final. Hopefully we will have a live stream!

Yes it is a different ball game going from Minor to Senior and in reality there should be an under 19 competition for all these Minor lads coming through. The County Board are reluctant to run an under 19 competition as they fear it will hurt the small Junior clubs trying to field both an under 19 and Junior team, well then make it optional to opt in but it is needed for the bigger clubs who have three and four Junior teams . So an under 19 competition with maybe them 10 or 15 clubs in two three divisions and in doing so also accommodate Development of players in larger clubs, not be making decisions all the time to accommodate smaller clubs, in this case those smaller clubs will have the opt in option. We don't need an under 19 competition we need an under20 just like county We moved with minor now we should move with 20s head4dblackspot (Meath) - Posts: 513 - 14/09/2020 21:00:09 2292117 Link 0 |
The whole age group after Minor needs to be looked at. It has been an issue for a while - not just in Meath but around the country. If we play an under 20 competition now, many of those players will be overage for Under 20 county next year! I think that could be why the county board is looking at an under 19 competition towards year end as all of those players are eligible to play Under 20 county the following year and therefore it is helpful to the management team to watch a 19's competition. However, I think it is a big step up for lads finishing up at minor and moving to adult football. It is amazing what that one year can do. I really noticed it in our club this year - the lads (not all) progressing from under 17, physically struggle playing Junior football. Traditionally, the under 21 started after the championships ended, so there was no clash with Senior, Intermediate or Junior. The final for the last number of years, from what I can remember, was held in December and the bigger clash came with colleges football. In the case of Meath at under 20 this year, I think it meant that Ger Robinson couldn't get his County under 20's together until after Christmas (or maybe this was because he was late being appointed!) I know also there is concern for some of the smaller clubs, in terms of fielding at under 19 - but isn't that where grading can come in? Also, why not run 13 a side championships for clubs struggling with numbers - or even an 11 a side and narrow the pitch! That said, I liked the Under 21 age group - I actually think it makes more sense to have that gap under 17 to under 21. ASaminthehand (Meath) - Posts: 422 - 15/09/2020 10:29:36 2292175 Link 0 |
why all this moving around of Competitions/age groups effecting the same bunch of players 99,00,01's , the move from Minor to 17 effected the 00's, now talk of the 21's going to 19's effecting the 99's and the County firstly moving the 21's to 20's effecting the 99's and the latest is that might go back to 19's meaning the current crop of 20's for next season (who in Meath won Leinster at 17's) will miss out!! That is a good point too! It has impacted in particular that group of lads 00,01 (The '99 at least got their under 18 minor championship)

Back to the subject please lads and lasies. Great achievement for Dunshaughlin to break back into the top clubs at minor level after a good few disappointing years. Win or lose it's a great lift to all at the club. Best of luck to the players and mgnt in the final. aghref (Meath) - Posts: 150 - 15/09/2020 12:08:11 2292208 Link 0 |

Hopefully there's a stream, I'd imagine they'll have it after having the semis.

It's on Meath GAA TV at 1pm on Sunday and the charge for that game on its own is €5.

This should be a cracking game! Cilles will start as favourites but I am sure Dunshaughlin will put up a better game than they did in the group stage. I think that game was largely irrelevant. Both teams knew they were way ahead of the teams in the other group and once they had both beaten Ratoath, I think they knew they were set for a final showdown! I'd say the Dunshaughlin loss though was concerning for them! I can't see them being as porous in the final - but I still think Cilles will win it - they are a quality team.
