Right, backs to the wall stuff now we need to win this and it is possible to do so, big crowd needed and big performance, I'll have a stab at a team presuming that no extra players are available back from injury Richieq (Meath) - Posts: 3744 - 04/02/2020 17:12:32 2265150 Link 19 |
Costello kept drifting in field towards the midfield 6-8-9-11 channel and wasn't given any instruction to stay wide until it was too late. I'm not blaming Costello here at all, he's only a youngster and shouldn't have to being starting matches like this already. McFadden Ferry was easily player of the match for me. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1973 - 04/02/2020 17:43:33 2265158 Link 15 |
Meath never feared Mayo. Expect a better performance. We must believe. LoyalRoyal66 (Meath) - Posts: 85 - 04/02/2020 19:05:27 2265183 Link 0 |
Fair enough team one change and it's very 50/50 call would be Brennan for Conlon. Just a thought. Ben has a bit more aggression to him. Only reason.

There was a time when we did not fear Donegal or Tyrone either but things have radically changed in the last 10 years. No matter what county we play we must treat them with utmost respect. The days of teams fearing a Meath football team are presently in the past and will not return until we are established as a solid Division 1 team that go toe to toe with any team in the land and can win games despite adversary. This takes a few years mixing with the best and being as fit or fitter than our opponents. And this is not all about the hard slog, it also involves mental toughness and freshness. Last Sunday I got the feeling that there was a lack of 'freshness' about the team...so dare I suggest that a night off might be better than a night's training with games coming in quick succession. Over a season there is not much difference between 70 and 75.

Mayo will fear coming to Navan in Round 3. I am almost certain. We are bitter rivals, stemming mostly from 96. Write meath off at your peril is what I always tell my other county friends. Meath will welcome mayo to navan by giving 100%. Going hard for every ball. Winning individual battles. Letting the ball in fast and early. Meath will return to their traditional approach. We must believe LoyalRoyal66 (Meath) - Posts: 85 - 05/02/2020 12:22:17 2265336 Link 1 |
Jesus if we are debating Brian conlon or Ben Brennan at 11, we are in serious trouble Sunday

Living in the past will not get us over mayo. Borderroyal (Meath) - Posts: 496 - 05/02/2020 16:36:57 2265425 Link 0 |
1. M.Brennan 2. D.Toner 3. C.McGill 4. Ronan Ryan 5. D.Keoghan 6. B.Conlon 7. J.McEntee 8. B.Menton 9. R.Jones 10. E.Devine 11. M.Costello 12. C.O'Sullivan 13. S.Tobin 14. T.O'Reilly 15. J.Wallace I thought R.Clarke had a tough day on Sunday so would swap him for Ronan Ryan, he has been a man marker for summerhill before and can switch out to half back if needed. B.Conlon was named at midfield but played 6 last sunday and did ok i thought, stuggled to break lines attackingly but at least looked to be trying. I'd have Jones at 9 if hes available. Devine and COS on the wings who can do the hard work up and down the field and get them around the middle for kickouts, always good to have a line of big men around the middle. i think its important to have a real attacking threat on sunday, mayo have great defenders and will be well able to deal with our predictable hard running game. Keep 4 lads as forwards as much as possible obviously not the whole game as i know in the modern game everyone employs the blanket without possession. But when we win the ball we must get atleast 4 lads into the scoring zone ASAP. So try and get T.O'Reilly,Tobin, J wallace and Costello near the goals and a scoring threat. Tobin a o'reilly can get a few direct balls while J wallace can get out in front every time. Costello can try and be our permanent playmaker. Yes I did give consideration to Tobin alright for a bit of muscle about the place, it seems Brennan will be our number 1 for the foreseeable future according to reports, Colm Boyle is a doubt for Mayo having hobbled off v Dublin and that would be a big loss to them he might be one of the elder statesmen but he's a strong defender with an abundance of cuteness and experience and if he is missing then that loss must be exploited.

Should we not b building a team around a goalie who will b there for years to come. Borderroyal (Meath) - Posts: 496 - 05/02/2020 17:57:22 2265447 Link 0 |
Are you really suggesting an 18 year old unproven player is going to start at center forward against one of the best teams in the country You are definitely from Dunshaughlin head4dblackspot (Meath) - Posts: 513 - 05/02/2020 18:08:55 2265453 Link 1 |
Indeed, and it wasn't at 11 either. But forwards. But sure no pleasing some people

Ben Brennan has proved time and time again he is not up to the standards needed for a starting spot lucky to be on bench never mind center forward

We are in dire enough straits. I'm not slagging off your choices, it's prob the team we'll see out....but I genuinely think that team wouldn't come out of Div 3 of the NFL. Crinigan (Meath) - Posts: 1352 - 05/02/2020 20:13:18 2265495 Link 16 |
Sure the team you were commenting on said Brian conlon, and u said the only change would be brennan in for Conlon..... james was never mentioned. And anyway even if you did mean James conlon, he is miles off div 1 standard.

We have an extensive injury list and are hampered, as are other counties, in that certain U20 players who could prove valuable to the senior squad are not able to play in the league for fear of being excluded from the U20 championship as per a national ruling, outside of the players named above I don't see who else can come in, we have limitations and a fair dollop of inexperience but these guys are working hard and trying hard, they aren't going out to loose or perform the way they have in the past two games, I still think we could beat Mayo who I don't think are in tip top shape themselves and are lucky to have the one point they have (Donegal should have been out the gate at half time in that first game), as always glass half full lads, glass half full
