
Meath 6-13 Louth 1-10
Meath were comfortable winners over Louth in the opening round of this year’s Gerry Reilly Cup played in ideal conditions at Ballinlough. This fixture was a repeat of last years final won by Louth after extra time.
Oldcastle GFC host the Gerry Reilly Tournament final annually at their Millbrook pitch, in memory of the late Gerry Reilly, a promising footballer who tragically died all too young.
The visitors made a positive start and were 0-3 to 0-1 up inside the opening ten minutes with points from Liam Mckeown, Nathan Donnelly and Conor Duff.
With Sean Kirwan and Oisin Giles beginning to dominate around the middle sector Meath began to exert their dominance. Points from Conor Hasset and Darragh Harkin arrived before Hasset was in for the games first goal. Impressive half back Cian Cunningham kicked a brace for Louth and with twenty minutes gone four points separated the team 1-7 to 0-6. Meath finished with a flourish. Kiwan and Joe Kearney pointed before two quick fire goals from Giles and Harkin gave the young Royals a 4-7 to 0-7 half time lead.
The scoring dried up in the second half. Hasset was in for his second major before the end of the third quarter. Joe Kearney kicked the games only two pointer before corner back Harry Clarke Murphy forced home goal number 4 and give Meath an impressive win.
